  1. I'm glad to hear it. The last couple of times I've seen McCoy it seemed as if his intensity had diminished a bit. My first live experience with McCoy Tyner was in 1983, at a short-lived club in Oak Cliff, the Judge's Chambers--it was a quartet with Gary Bartz, plus John Lee and Wilby Fletcher. Then the same group appeared at the Caravan of Dreams a few times, adding John Blake on violin (and once substituting Gerald Veasley on bass). That was a fantastic and inspiring group.
  2. Yes, but they will need a different venue, as Pearl at Commerce closed a few weeks ago.
  3. Happy birthday!
  4. His Prestige recording (reissued on CD as an OBC), It's the Blues Man, is excellent. It seems to have gone out of print, but copies are still available on amazon.com.
  5. McCoy Tyner--Plays Duke Ellington (Impulse, red and black) Eric Kloss--Love and All That Jazz (Prestige, blue label)
  6. This article, at any rate, says they are paying royalties to the artists for the Newport material. http://jazztimes.com/articles/25650-wolfgang-s-vault-streaming-back-to-life
  7. McCoy Tyner--Today and Tomorrow (Impulse, red and black)
  8. Thanks for the notice, I'm enjoying this right now.
  9. Sonny Rollins--Sonny Meets Hawk (RCA, black dog)
  10. I saw the same band for two nights in 1985 at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth, Texas. It was real good.
  11. On a new Jamaladeen Tacuma (For the Love of Ornette) release that I ordered three weeks ago from his website and still haven't received.
  12. On second and third listens I still like this quite a bit. It's one of Murray's best recordings of recent years (his group sounds terrific), plus Hal Singer plays very well, and quite adventurously. Maybe in the few spots his breath falls a little short, but really he's pretty awesome at 91. I got this from dustygroove.
  13. For me, the three essential sets here are Dizzy, Django, and Mobley. The Bird set is too fragmentary for me, but others may disagree. In the realm of the very good sets are the Stanley Turrentine and Oliver Nelson. The others I can live without, and this sale is probably not enough to make me change my mind.
  14. On first listen, I'm rather liking Hal Singer's Challenge (Marge). He's playing with David Murray, and Murray's group (Lafayette Gilchrist on piano, Jaribu Shahid on bass, Hamid Drake on drums, and Rasul Siddik on trumpet on two cuts). Four Murray compositions, three by Singer, and one standard. Hal Singer was 91 at the time of this recording. All parties conduct themselves well.
  15. Art Blakey--Jazz Messengers (Impulse, orange and black mono)
  16. Vince Guaraldi--Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus (Fantasy red vinyl, mono)
  17. 1. Art Yard releases Sun Ra CD (Space Probe). 2. Dusty Groove stocks new Art Yard Sun Ra release. 3. I order it. It's automatic.
  18. Such an ironic Seller name (CDGiveaways).
  19. Rusty Bryant--Night Train Now (Prestige blue label) Milt Jackson--Soul Pioneers (Prestige, yellow and black NJ)
  20. Shelly Manne at the Blackhawk, volume 2 (Contemporary, yellow label mono deep groove). Nice find this week for only $8.
  21. I also noticed that Freddie Redd is playing at Fat Cat in New York in February.
  22. No; it's not a hoax. The CD features two authentic Cuban brothel trios, circa 1958. And the recording quality is excellent. I quite like one of the trios, called Trio Zamora. The other trio, Trio Melodica somewhat less. Overall, I found the music pleasing, and of course very romantic. Alas no photos of the ladies, just some suggestive drawings.
  23. The Lost Cuban Trios of Casa Marina. http://www.amazon.com/Lost-Cuban-Trios-Casa-Marina/dp/B002OS5F8S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1297298575&sr=8-1 Two Jewish brothers, whose parents fled the Nazis and moved to Cuba, make high audio quality recordings of the two trios that performed at their favorite brothel in pre-Castro Havana. Very good music on this recently released CD.
  24. The Artists House material is all in the Galaxy Box. In general, the Galaxy albums are better, as I recall.
