  1. A few years old is new in these parts. I've been enjoying the last two Lafayette Gilchrist releases on Hyena--Trio (2007) and Soul Progressin' (2008). Both feature the same trio--Soul Progressin' adds horns. Both are pretty compelling.
  2. Sonny Stitt--Primitivo Soul (Prestige, silver and black NJ)
  3. The music on his website sounds pretty good. http://www.speetones.com/
  4. I think the James Spaulding concert must have been cancelled, because I checked back on the Bass Hall website sometime in the last few weeks and didn't see any mention of the concert.
  5. Cyrus Chestnut--Scat Jazz, Fort Worth--April 22. Lucky Peterson--Tuckers--April 15, 16, 22, and 23. Bill Frisell--Dan's Silverleaf, Denton--May 4.
  6. Buddy Terry--Electric Soul (Prestige, blue label)
  7. You do need the first three (though I would say I prefer West Side Soul over Black Magic). I haven't heard the new Junior Wells Release. On the Magic Sam front, you also need another Delmark release called the Magic Sam Legacy, which is an assemblage of studio leftovers, but rather good. Have you tried buying from the Jazz Record Mart website? They have pretty good prices on Delmark.
  8. I actually saw the Erroll Parker Tentet in concert--a CD release party for A Night In Tunisia, at a small theater in Greenwich Village. It was similar personnel, with the same concept of paired soloists. A fine concert it was. Afterwards, I walked a couple of blocks to Sweet Basil to see McCoy Tyner--New York City is a great town!
  9. In the mail came, Ghana Sounz (Soundway), and on LP, Buddy Terry, Electric Soul (Prestige).
  10. Last night, at Tucker's Blues in Deep Ellum, a Tribute to Billie Holiday, music by Lucky Peterson, vocals by Tamara Peterson. Lucky Peterson was not present last night (though his replacement on keyboards was perfectly fine), but my initial disappointment/trepidation quickly became positive as Lucky's vocalist wife proved to be a rather good jazz vocalist and creditably performed songs associated Billie Holiday in this hybrid play/musical tribute, with a cast of three (narrator, vocalist, and keyboard player). I was afraid this might be terrible, but to the contrary, it was quite worthy and enjoyable. Seven additional performances at Tuckers in March and April.
  11. Monk--Monk's Dream (Columbia, two eyes stereo)
  12. From amazon.com, a used copy of The Lobi Traore Band, and at HPB, Clifford Gibson's Beat You Doing It (Yazoo CD).

Yes, Ocean Memories is a great record. Give it a try.

His later recordings are obtainable on CD from cdbaby, along with some early recordings on mp3. I ordered Windspell. http://www.cdbaby.com/Search/Qm9sYSBTZXRl/0
  15. Tony Scott's RCA recordings.
  16. I think they were recording every time Ornette and Prime Time appeared at the Caravan of Dreams--which was three times with Prime Time in the club (2 or 3 nights each time) and once providing great music for a horrible play, and once with Pat Metheny (one night). Opening the Caravan of Dreams and Prime Design were both recorded in 1983, not 1985-86..
  17. Collin Wolcott--Grazing Dreams (ECM)
  18. Rusty Bryant--Soul Liberation (Prestige, purple label)
  19. No Coast Jazz is shown as available for pre-order on amazon.com, an April release.
  20. There was a recent ebay auction of a bunch of coverless Blue Note LPs from the Alfred Lion era (supposedly covers were destroyed by a flood but the LPs were said to be in excellent condition)--despite this story, the LPs sold for the most part at a pretty decent price. If it's a desired enough LP, you can always find another auction with a decent cover/trashed LP.
  21. Murder it was! The Hank Mobley BN1568 reached $3,618 The Lee Morgan BN1575 reached $3,494 The Lee Morgan Candy reached $2,835 The Kenny Dorham New Jazz reached $2,380 The Sonny Clark Dial S reached $2,035 and on and on... Who says we're in an economic recession? Would I rather have one "original" LP, or the entire Blue Note catalogue in the form of CDs? Hmmm.... I must be mad because I would take the entire catalogue as CDs.
  22. I heard him at Sweet Rhythm in New York. He had Billy Harper and Oliver Lake in his group. It was rather good.
  23. This weekend, two new CDs I rather liked were, Vijay Iyer with Prasanna and Nitin Mitta, Tirtha (ACT)--recorded in 2008 but newly released; and Kenny Werner, Balloons (Half Note), live at the Blue Note with David Sanchez, Randy Brecker, John Patitucci, and Antonio Sanchez.
  24. Terry Gibbs Big Band--Live at the Summit (Verve) Ahmad Jamal--All of Me (Argo)
  25. Red Holloway with jack McDuff--Cookin' Together (Prestige, gold label mono)
