  1. I had the same experience a few years ago in Boston. "Rigor Mortis!", as Babs would say. And they were pompous--the drummer told us that this was "high level" music.
  2. Cyrus Chestnut at Scat Jazz in Fort Worth. I was very bored and left after one set.
  3. Thanks for starting it. Jazz, blues or classical, you're involved in many a good recommedation thread. Also learned not to shake Moms hand.
  4. Ben Allison, Some Day We'll All Be Free, Action-Refraction (Palmetto)
  5. I was going to try to stop by, but after reading this story I shall simply continue my non-patronage of the Lakewood Bar and Grill.
  6. Dallas is not on fire, but the air looks foul and smoky to the west, looking out of my office.
  7. Mingus appeared in Dallas on November 19, 1974, with Jack Walrath. The discography lists a November 12, 1974 Village Vanguard recording with Hamiet Bluiett. So if this is correct, the concert here was one of the first or perhaps the first appearance with Walrath.
  8. Original albums were, Don Patterson with Booker Ervin, Hip Cake Walk--May 12 and July 10, 1964 Sonny Stitt--Booker Ervin, Soul People--August 25, 1964 Don Patterson with Sonny Stitt and Booker Ervin, Patterson's People--May 12 and July 10, 1964
  9. I e-filed through TurboTax today.
  10. Thanks. That looks like a lot of music I would love to hear, at least where the sound is decent. April 3, 1977--a 46 minute version of Sue's Changes!
  11. Last night at Tucker's in Deep Ellum, a fine show by the Lucky Peterson band. Lucky really came to play last night, tearing it up on keyboards, guitar and vocals, in a show that mixes blues, soul and jazz. Later in the evening, the impressive Bernard Wright joined the group on keyboards. The name sounded familiar and a little research shows that he recorded with Miles Davis, Lenny White, Albert MacDowell, Stanely Jordan and others. The group returns to Tucker's next Friday and Saturday nights.
  12. Gerry Mulligan--Butterflies and Hiccups (Limelight)
  13. I rather like two recent Molvaer recordings, Re-Vision and Hamada.
  14. Now you did it--I had to order this one, and toss in Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya's new one Sotho Blue for free shipping.
  15. Lionel Hampton--Swingin' with Hamp (Verve T deep groove) Slam Stewart--Singin', Bowin' Slam (Savoy maroon) Michael Urbaniak Constellation in Concert (Muza). I was thinking a Polish joke as I tried to clean this Made in Poland LP in my Nitty Gritty--it's not very close to round--but the sound is surprisingly good and this live concert is by far the best Urbaniak I've ever heard.
  16. I suspect this email was meant for Beyonce and/or Mariah Carey.
  17. I saw him perform in 1983, at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth, with the Mingus Dynasty, for two nights (four sets)--with Ricky Ford, Johnny Coles, Richard Davis and Dannie Richmond.

    Charles Mingus

I finally got a copy of Stuttgart Meditations ($3.00 on ebay for a new copy), and it does sound decent--way better than my horrible Unique Jazz LP pressings.
