  5. That one stood out to me also, though I've seen him as a sideman a few times (always a pleasure). I'm not clear whether these concerts feature these artists with a pickup group, or bands that they bring in.

  7. Originally released on Theresa Records.
  8. The acoustic tracks on this CD are good. Avery Sharpe and Louis Hayes were his working group at the time, and a fine group it was. At the time, McCoy was coming to town a couple of times a year--he'd play at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth and the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas--I really like this trio. He never played electric piano live when I saw him. Avery Sharpe did play both acoustic and electric bass. As I recall, McCoy had an album or two on Columbia in the 1980s that were somewhat commercial in intent; Doubletrios came out after he had been dropped by Columbia.
  9. Freddie Hubbard--Polar AC (CTI)
  10. Basie Jam (Pablo)
  11. Have lp and cd. Never thought to compare. I have both as well. The LP sounds pretty darn good. J.A.T.P. in Toyko 1953 (Pablo Live)
  12. Duke Ellington and Ray Brown--This One's For Blanton (Pablo)
  13. Art Pepper--The Way It Was (Contemporary) Ray Charles and Milt Jackson--Soul Brothers (Atlantic mono)
  14. The jazz concerts this year that I really enjoyed were: Marc Ribot (solo)--Kessler Theater, Dallas. Gary Burton Quartet--Blue Note Jack Walrath and the Masters of Suspense--Smalls Alvin Queen Sextet (with Leon Spencer and Melvin Sparks)--Jazz Standard Wayne Horvitz with the New York Jazz Composer's Orchestra (with Bobby Previte and Marty Ehrlich)--University of the Streets Jimmy Greene Quartet--Smalls Ben Allison Trio--Kush Edmar Castaneda--55 Bar Buika--Winspear Opera House, Dallas Ornette Coleman Quartet--Bass Hall, Austin.
  15. I'm not sure exactly, but estimate about 5000 CDs, and perhaps 3000 LPs.
  16. The Atco CD didn't do much for me. In addition to the essential Specialty recordings, there are a few additional worthwhile tracks on the Classics Guitar Slim CD.
  17. California Here I Come. http://www.amazon.com/California-Here-I-Come/dp/B000W08J5G This is the correct link. http://www.amazon.com/California-Here-Come-Reis-Dig/dp/B0002LGWQ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293576571&sr=1-1
  18. Sonny Rollins--What's New? (RCA Living Stereo)
  19. Stan Kenton--A Presentation of Progressive Jazz (Capitol ten inch) Sonny Criss--Crisscraft (Muse) Pat Martino--We'll Be Together Again (Muse) George Lewis--Jazz in the Classic New Orleans Tradtition (Riverside, blue label) Sonny Stitt and Milt Jackson--Loose Walk (Palcoscenico)
  20. The Solo Guitar of Bola Sete (Fantasy) Duke Ellington--Blue Light (Columbia six eyes) Paul Desmond--Take Ten (RCA black dog)
  21. I've heard a copy of the 1959 performance. It's outstanding--a group and material derived from Mingus Ah Um/Mingus Dynasty. That is, Richard Williams, Leo Wright, Booker Ervin, Roland Hanna and Dannie Richmond.
  22. The Modern Jazz Quartet Plays Porgy and Bess (Atlantic, blue and green) The Guitar Artistry of Charlie Byrd (Riverside, blue label) Von Freeman--Doin' It Right Now (Atlantic, red and green)
  23. I believe that's the only recording of Mingus with Ernie Henry. That would make for a worthy Mosaic release, The Complete Mingus at Newport.
  24. Bennie Moten--Count Basie in Kansas City (RCA Vintage series)

    Jazz noir?

The Bobby Previte "noir" group is at the Blue Note next month. January 15, 2011 Blue Note Late Night [New York, NY] BOBBY PREVITE AND THE NEW BUMP I was lucky to hear the group there previously and it was rather good.
