  2. Lee Morgan--Delightfullee (Blue Note, blue and black Van Gelder)
  3. John Coltrane--Ballads (Impulse, orange and black). One of this week's excellent LP finds.
  4. Eric Clapton performing Autumn Leaves--that sounds truly horrible, though nothing could eclipse the Bob Dylan Christmas album.
  5. You may need a "qualified appraisal" to claim a charitable deduction of $5000 or more. Here is a link to the IRS publication which provides guidance. http://www.irs.gov/publications/p561/ix01.html
  6. Another good one available for a pittance: Amalia Mendoza and Jose Alfredo JImenez--Cantando A Duo. An RCA recording from 1964. Excellent sound. http://www.amazon.com/Voces-Queridas-Mexico-Alfredo-Jimenez/dp/B000005LE3/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1282521139&sr=1-3
  7. I certainly agree with you regarding Thomas Chapin.
  8. Charles Earland--Living Black (Prestige, purple label)
  9. Lately I've been acquiring recordings by Adriana Calcanhotto. She's got a beautiful, sensuous voice and composes appealing songs as well. Publico (a mostly live solo performance), A Fabrica do Poema, Cantada, and Senhos are all excellent.
  10. Birthday Greetings!
  11. Illinois Jacquet (1945-50)-disc 2.
  12. Shirley Scott--Shirley's Sounds (Prestige, yellow and black NJ)
  13. I don't think any of the articles specify the starting year, only the ending year of 1940.
  14. Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard, Pee Wee Russell, Jimmy Giuffre, Jimmy Hamilton.
  15. Now that this is a favorite alto players heard live thread-- Ornette Coleman, Benny Carter, Sonny Fortune, Henry Threadgill, Julius Hemphill, Thomas Chapin, Greg Osby, Frank Morgan, Lee Konitz, Sonny Simmons, Prince Lasha, Marshall Allen, Hank Crawford, John Handy, Charles McPherson, Arthur Blythe, Rudresh Mahanthappa, James Spaulding, Paquito D'Rivera, Phil Woods, Oliver Lake. Part timers: David Newman, George Coleman, Roscoe Mitchell.
  16. I should add that the set was in perfect condition, and the CDs were still sealed.
  17. I did--I received the Illinois Jacquet set yesterday.
  18. I like the sound of horns on those original emarcys. Clifford Brown on an emarcy pressing is incredible sounding.
  19. Eddie Turner--October 14--Pearl at Commerce. Lucky Peterson--October 16--Pearl at Commerce. John McLaughlin--November 29--Granada Theater.
  20. The first Ellingtons that I really got (around 1978 or 1979) were The Afro Eurasian Eclipse, especially La Chinoiserie, and the 1943 Carnegie Hall Concert, both purchased at around the same time. The series of Portraits and the Strayhorn sequence are what really captured my attention, and of course Ko Ko.
  21. The Definitive Jazz Scene, Volume 3 (Impulse, orange and black)
  22. Yusef Lateef --Psychicemotus (impulse, orange and black)
  23. I should have said six because I can't leave out Eric Dolphy.
  24. But if I can pick five, it's Bird, Ornette, Johnny Hodges, Cannonball Adderley, and Art Pepper.
  25. If I'm limited to one, it's Charlie Parker.
