  1. I don't think any of the articles specify the starting year, only the ending year of 1940.
  2. Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard, Pee Wee Russell, Jimmy Giuffre, Jimmy Hamilton.

  4. I should add that the set was in perfect condition, and the CDs were still sealed.
  5. I did--I received the Illinois Jacquet set yesterday.
  6. I like the sound of horns on those original emarcys. Clifford Brown on an emarcy pressing is incredible sounding.
  7. Eddie Turner--October 14--Pearl at Commerce. Lucky Peterson--October 16--Pearl at Commerce. John McLaughlin--November 29--Granada Theater.
  8. The first Ellingtons that I really got (around 1978 or 1979) were The Afro Eurasian Eclipse, especially La Chinoiserie, and the 1943 Carnegie Hall Concert, both purchased at around the same time. The series of Portraits and the Strayhorn sequence are what really captured my attention, and of course Ko Ko.
  9. The Definitive Jazz Scene, Volume 3 (Impulse, orange and black)
  10. Yusef Lateef --Psychicemotus (impulse, orange and black)
  11. I should have said six because I can't leave out Eric Dolphy.
  12. But if I can pick five, it's Bird, Ornette, Johnny Hodges, Cannonball Adderley, and Art Pepper.
  13. If I'm limited to one, it's Charlie Parker.
  14. PM sent on the Illinois Jacquet.
  15. There's a very art nice museum (believe it or not) in Albany, Texas, about a half hour from Abilene. http://www.theoldjailartcenter.org/
  16. Marvin Stamm/Bill Mays duo--UTD, January 28, 2011
  17. Don't come in August.
  18. Bobby Timmons--Born to be Blue (Riverside Holland pressing) Wes Montgomery Trio (Riverside, Japanese pressing)
  19. I need pretty much all of them. One that I didn't see mentioned is his excellent final pre-stroke recording, Other Folk's Music (Atlantic). Simone popped up on my ipod yesterday (with Richard Williams and Roy Haynes), and it is a great recording. Trudy Pitts also appears on the record.
  20. blowitoutofhere is my favorite amazon seller. Great prices, superfast shipping and secure packaging.
  21. My Jamal box arrived in fine shape, but the shipping was slower than I recall--it took about a week from the day I received a shipment email, and no tracking information was ever provided.
  22. Happy birthday!
  23. So I read your post, the record sounds interesting, and I stopped at HPB on the way home and they had a copy for $4--I wasn't expecting it to be so easy.
  24. George Coleman was at the Village Vanguard my first visit there (in 1984 or so)--they were recording, and the recording was released as Manhattan Panorama, I believe.
  25. Apex now shows up on the Pi website, showing a release date of September 2010. Apex Rudresh Mahanthappa & Bunky Green Jack DeJohnette Bunky Green Rudresh Mahanthappa Jason Moran Francois Moutin Damion Reid
