  1. When Stan Getz appeared at the Caravan of Dreams, he played both Blood Count and U.M.M.G.--both were gorgeous performances.
  2. Eddie Turner at Pearl at Commerce. Another terrific concert there, and a pitifully sized audience (a dozen or so for the first set, and a half dozen for the second).
  3. Charles Mingus, Booker Little, and Clifford Brown.
  4. Gene Ammons-- Up Tight (Prestige, blue label)
  5. Cannonball Adderley--Somethin' Else (Blue Note W. 63rd). A thoroughly abused copy, but I still enjoyed listening, and it was only $1 dollar. Miles Davis at the Blackhawk, volume 1 (Columbia six eyes)
  6. Bud Powell Trio (Mercury 10 inch) Stanley Turrentine--Let It Go (Impulse red and black)
  7. What about talking to a passenger? That is not just as distracting?
  8. I only have Midnight on Cloud 69 on Savoy, and the Riverside LP with Wes Montgomery. I like these two, but have never felt compelled to seek out more. Whenever I come across a Capitol LP, I think about it for a second and them put it back.
  9. A fair number of OJCs are also turning up at dustygroove at prices ranging from $3.99 to $5.99.
  10. I really enjoyed the Dave Burrell solo piano concert he performed in Dallas last December.
  11. More of the Great Lorez Alexandria (Impulse red and black) J.J. Johnson--J is for Jazz (Columbia six eyes) Classics in Jazz, Piano Stylists (Capitol ten inch)
  12. Jose Alfredo Jiminez volume 1 (Columbia 10 inch) Archie Shepp--For Losers (Impulse, red and black)
  13. Is that the 1944 concert, with Jacquet, McVea, Cole & co? MG Actually, it's Willie Smith, Charlie Ventura, Illinois Jacquet, Howard McGhee, Joe Guy, Red Callendar, Garland Finney (piano) and Ulysses Livingston (drums), on How High the Moon and Lady Be Good. Apparently, the rights to this issue was retained by Stinson Records. I'm not sure if this has subsequently been reissued (I don't have the JATP box set); I've never heard it before.
  14. I've seen him at least a dozen times--with Greg Osby, with his own group, with Francisco Mela; it was worthwhile every single time.
  15. The blues album is good, in my opinion. The guitarist is not really a blues guitarist, but he's not "cheesy"; he seemed like a fine player when I saw the band at the Vanguard for several sets.
  16. An excellent choice.
  17. Jazz at the Philharmonic (Stinson 10 inch) Laurindo Almeida--Concert Creations for Guitar (Capitol 10 inch)
  18. Same here, very convenient and never a problem so far.
  19. Prestige First Sessions, volume 1 (Don Lanphere, Fats Navarro, Leo Parker, Al Haig). http://www.amazon.com/Prestige-First-Sessions-Vol-1/dp/B000000ZDL/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1285602611&sr=1-1 Prestige First Sessions, volume 3 (Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Red Rodney, Bennie Green). http://www.amazon.com/Prestige-First-Sessions-Vol-3/dp/B000000ZDN/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1285602611&sr=1-2 (Volume 2 of this series is Sonny Stitt material duplicated in the Stitt's Bits Box). The Chronological Lucky Thompson, 1944-47. The Chronological Russell Jacquet, 1945-49. The Chronological Dodo Marmarosa, 1946-50. The Chronological Don Byas, 1944-45, 1946 Dexter Gordan, Settin' the Pace (Savoy recordings). http://www.amazon.com/Settin-Pace-Dexter-Gordon/dp/B00000DC2N/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1285603747&sr=1-2
  20. The Pi website shows This Brings Us To, volume 2, as available for order.
  21. Dead Kenny Gs (with Skerik)--Kessler Theater on October 28. Bill Frisell--Dan's Silverleaf, Denton, November 6. Eddie Turner--Pearl, October 14
  22. Amalia Rodriguez, Sings Fado, Sings Flamenco (Angel 10 inch). The photo of Amalia on the back of the record is by William Savory. Jazz at the Philharmonic, volume 14 (Mercury 10 inch). Jimmy Smith, Home Cookin' (Blue Note, Liberty blue and white, RVG) Gustavo Zepoll--Concert Guitar (Cook, 10 inch)
  23. Marc Ribot at the Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff. Nice venue. He played a short set of solo guitar pieces, then performed his score to Chaplin's The Kid, while the film played. The score was quite enjoyable.
