    Headphones

He says Grado 325s in the heading. I have Grados also and like them alot. I just listened to them is all.
  3. That track is awesome. For early Tristano, there are two Classics CDs, 1946-47 and 1947-49.
  4. I would expect that concert to be really good.
  5. How disappointing--I saw Threadgill once a number of years ago in a band with Amina Claudine Meyers on organ and Brandon Ross on guitar--I would like to repeat the experience.
  6. It's even snowing in Dallas now--four to ten inches expected through tonight.
  7. I've sinking further into the bog with each post--in my defense, it is Monday.
  8. Are you confusing Marcus Strickland with Jaleel Shaw? No. Strickland preceeded Shaw in Haynes' band. I thought that might prove my point about his non-distinctive playing, but once again the facts have undermined one of my hypotheses!
  9. Are you confusing Marcus Strickland with Jaleel Shaw?
  10. Charles Mingus--Changes Two (Atlantic) Charles Mingus--Reincarnation of a Lovebird (Prestige)
  11. Mal Waldron--Update (Soul Note)--a wonderful solo piano recording from 1986.
  12. I've seen him a couple of times--with Tom Harrell at the Village Vanguard, he was the weakest and least original member of the band. And with Horaace Arnold, who actually expressed some displeasure with the saxophonists level of development. So unless he's improved alot over the last two or three years, a group under his leadership might prove to be a dull concert.
  13. Arthur Blythe played at the Caravan or Dreams in Fort Worth, around 1984 or '85, in a quartet with Kelvyn Bell on guitar--I recall the performance of Faceless Woman which was really strong. Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to see him since.
  14. You're going to want all of his Prestige recordings.
  15. Miles Davis--Kind of Blue (Columbia six eyes) Art Pepper--Intensity (Contemporary, '70s pressing) Gary Burton--Something's Coming (RCA black dog)

    Mal Waldron

I saw him live twice--in a trio at the Village Vanguard with Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille. That was a hypnotic experience for two sets--fantastic music. That was around 1992 or 1993--smoking was still allowed at the Vanguard and Mal smoked like a fiend throughout the entire set. The second time was at Sweet Basil--a completely different experience, I don't know what was wrong, it was a quintet with Ricky Ford and (I think) Chico Freeman--the music was not working, the saxophonists were overbearing--Mal was in the background for the most part, I didn't like the group and left after one set.
  17. Louis Moholo with Dennis Gonzalez--February 12, Phoenix Project, 406 South Haskell Al Dimeola--February 11--Granada Theater Mick Taylor--May 19, Granada Theater Guitar Shorty--March 12, Pearl at Commerce Gilberto Gil--March 28, Nokia Theater, Grand Prairie Pat Metheny--April 13, Nokia Theater Jeff Beck--April 25, Nokia Theater

    Sonny Fortune

There's a new Sonny Fortune release available from CD Baby, Last Night at Sweet Rhythm. I saw his quartet there a couple of years ago, and all three sets were tremendous. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/sonnyfortune3
  19. On I second Ken. This recording shows that Mulligan/Brubeck is working band like Desmond/Brubeck. "Blessed are the poor" is one of my favorite tune. Mulligan shows up very latter part of this tune and his solo on this tune is one of best baritone solo IMO. On the LP front, the Brubeck album Roots with Mulligan is another to add to the collection.
  20. Milt Jackson--In a New Setting (Limelight mono)
  21. A longtime favorite record, vibraharpist Rickey Kelly's My Kind of Music, finally reissued on CD. With Billy Higgins and Charles Owens. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/rickeykelly
  22. You should get an ipod and suppress this Zune folly
  23. Shirley Scott with Lem Winchester--Soul Sister (Prestige, blue label mono) Bix Beiderbecke--Bix and His Gang, Vol. 1 (Columbia two eyes)
  24. Pharoah Sanders--Live at the East (Impulse, red and black)
  25. I have the Columbia issue--it's worth looking for.
