  1. I was hoping that dustygroove would do a proper CD reissue of this one also.
  2. The group is playing at the Jazz Gallery, Sept. 28-29, and Oct. 26-27.
  3. I got this Italian reissue quite recently along with an Argo original edition of Breakthrough . Both are very exciting dates and highly recommended. It's a wonder that they're not better known. The Italian edition of Debut In Blues has some slight speed instability ( sound occasionally a little wobbly). Anyone know if that's present on the original ? Most Argo LPs I've come across are defective in some way. Generally poor pressings. I have a mono original of Debut in Blues that sounds fine and an '80s reissue on Chess that is poor in pressing and sound. Perhaps the latter is the source of the Italian reissue?
  4. I have a pair of Polk Audio speakers that I bought 25 years ago, and they are still going strong and sound terrific.
  5. Clark Terry-- Duke with a Difference (Riverside, blue label) Junior Mance with David Newman--Truckin' and Trakin' (Bee Hive)
  6. I saw them on a double bill at the Blue Note with Jason Moran. I liked about a third of the songs they played, was indifferent to the rest. It was fortunate for them that they played first, as Jason Moran/Bandwagon was far superior, in my opinion.
  7. Guitar Shorty--Pearl at Commerce. Really enjoyed the second set, especially the pair of instrumentals. A meager crowd, though.
  8. What time does this usually start?
  9. September 11: Guitar Shorty--Pearl at Commerce December 11: Lucky and James Peterson--Pearl at Commerce
  10. You must be listening to the wrong people. Yeah well I checked the Pullen mosaic select on amazon last night.....they had 2 used ones for 134.00 and they both sold.......now they have 1 new one this morning for $134.00. Somebody wanted that real bad. Keep an eye out for used copies of the four original Blue Note CDs--the Select doesn't have any additional tracks.
  11. You must be listening to the wrong people.
  12. Only non-believers have been left behind to debate the merits of RVG remasterings, while the true audiophiles have left his earthly plane.
  13. There's an article on the owner of a record store in New York--Tropicalia in Furs--has anyone been there? Is is worth seeking out?
  14. Cigars I don't need, but I had some Cuban coffee in Mexico once, and that is something I would like to be able to buy.
  15. If you go to Mexico, Cuban cigars are prominently for sale at the airport. After that, you are on your own.
  16. Willis Jackson--More Gravy (Prestige, yellow and black NJ) Sonny Rollins--The Bridge (German RCA)
  17. Miles Davis--Bitches Brew (Columbia two eyes).
  18. Flip Philips--Jumping Moods (Clef 10 inch) Jimmy Giuffre--Western Suite (Atlantic, black label) Ralph Towner--Solstice, Sound and Shadows (ECM)
  19. Jimmy Smith --Bluesmith (Verve) Thelonious Monk--Monk's Dream (Columbia, mono two eyes)
  20. I remember when Spiritualizing the Senses came out, and lyrics were printed on the back cover; when I saw that, I inwardly cringed. Then I heard the record and - surprise! - no vocals, just a lot of good music. It was a very pleasant surprise. Eddie Harris was on that record, correct? Yes--it was recorded in 1983. I bought it from him personally when he appeared at the Caravan of Dreams in 1985. As I recall, his quintet played some of the music from this recording, with Ralph Moore on tenor and Brian Lynch on trumpet--Horace was playing really well, the music was even better live than the record--I heard four sets, all fabulous and inspired. Me too.
  21. Clifford Brown--Max Roach--Study in Brown (Mercury, blue cover)
  22. Zoot Sims--a test pressing by H.V. Waddell Co. in Burbank, California. No information as to label, track titles, or name of the album. Based on the label ID no. 2310-903, this appears to be Zoot Sims Plays Johnny Mandel, on Pablo.
  23. Conductor Don Cornelius
  24. Paul Desmond---Take Ten (RCA black label)
  25. This Is Ray Brown (Verve trumpet label)
