  1. Mal Waldron--The Git Go (Soul Note)
  2. I ordered the Jerry Hahn and one of the Sonny Simmons. That Earl Hooker CD, The Moon is Rising, is another one to get.
  3. Buy four or more from the overstock list and they are $5 each. http://chulasfronteras.com/overstock-sale-items/ Buy 3 or more other CDs at 20% off (they have a stock of Neatworks).
  4. Yesterday, at HPB, Art Farmer and Benny Golson, Meet the Jazztet (Argo LP) and Art Tatum, Standards (Black Lion CD). CD in the mail, Elvin Jones, It Don't Mean a Thing (Enja).
  5. Curly Liver Rivers. No wonder my blues career has languished in obscurity.
  6. Yes, but the twofer can be had for the price of onefer.
  7. The Pasadena concert seems like a major discovery--I wondered why there was not more acclaim for this. I agree, they should have included all of the Newport performance.
  8. I also heard him with Dizzy back in the 1980s two or three times--he was very good as I recall (Dizzy wasn't what he used to be back in the 1980s but he sure had some good bands), but I don't recall ever hearing him on any recordings. I believe I have a copy of a broadcast from the Caravan of Dreams with him in Dizzy's band. As I recall, al-Khabbyr was on baritone in Dizzy's group for at least a couple of years, before he was succeeded by Sam Rivers.
  9. Yes, the 2CD set is worth it for the Pasadena concert with the classic first quintet. This concert is well recorded.
  10. Horace Silver -- Tokyo Blues (Blue Note NY USA)--a beat up copy, but it sounds alot better than it looks and found over the weekend for only $3. Etta Jones--Don't Go to Strangers (Prestige, yellow and black)
  11. There's another on ECM, Inflation Blues (with JohnPurcell, Chico Freeman, Bakida Carroll)
  12. I heard three variations of the group live: Marty Ehrlich, John Purcell, Howard Johnson, Rufus Reid. David Murray, John Purcell, Howard Johnson, Rufus Reid. Greg Osby, Gary Thomas, Lonnie Plaxico, (the guitarist's name is escaping me at the moment). All three groups were excellent, but the one with David Murray was the best (they played all of the material from Album Album in superior versions).
  13. Bix Beiderbecke--Bix and His Gang, vol. 1 (Columbia two eyes) Louis Armstrong Hot Sevens Vol. 2 (Columbia six eyes) Amalia Mendoza --Boleros (RCA black dog)

He says Grado 325s in the heading. I have Grados also and like them alot. I just listened to them is all.
  15. That track is awesome. For early Tristano, there are two Classics CDs, 1946-47 and 1947-49.
  16. I would expect that concert to be really good.
  17. How disappointing--I saw Threadgill once a number of years ago in a band with Amina Claudine Meyers on organ and Brandon Ross on guitar--I would like to repeat the experience.
  18. It's even snowing in Dallas now--four to ten inches expected through tonight.
  19. I've sinking further into the bog with each post--in my defense, it is Monday.
  20. Are you confusing Marcus Strickland with Jaleel Shaw? No. Strickland preceeded Shaw in Haynes' band. I thought that might prove my point about his non-distinctive playing, but once again the facts have undermined one of my hypotheses!
  21. Are you confusing Marcus Strickland with Jaleel Shaw?
  22. Charles Mingus--Changes Two (Atlantic) Charles Mingus--Reincarnation of a Lovebird (Prestige)
  23. Mal Waldron--Update (Soul Note)--a wonderful solo piano recording from 1986.
  24. I've seen him a couple of times--with Tom Harrell at the Village Vanguard, he was the weakest and least original member of the band. And with Horaace Arnold, who actually expressed some displeasure with the saxophonists level of development. So unless he's improved alot over the last two or three years, a group under his leadership might prove to be a dull concert.
  25. Arthur Blythe played at the Caravan or Dreams in Fort Worth, around 1984 or '85, in a quartet with Kelvyn Bell on guitar--I recall the performance of Faceless Woman which was really strong. Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to see him since.
