I received an email notification of shipment this evening (ordered a week and a half ago).

Possibly, or he might have come to town to see Gene Ramey, who was living in Austin and occasionally playing in clubs at the time.

I recall seeing him live for the first time in Austin in 1983 at what was usually a folk/coffee house type of club. I was very much enjoying the performance, but one of the patrons, who I assume was expecting the usual fare, had a rather different reaction, becoming increasingly agitated and shouting obscenities, until eventually being escorted out by the Austin police.

Because the initial poster asked for recommendations, that's the only legit response? I think that any thread that brings up someone's music opens the door for free commentary on it. And I didn't only say that I "can't hear" the music, I offered (briefly) specific reasons why. On the other hand, contra Allen, while we all have track records, I don't think anyone should pay attention to what I say just because I said it. I'm only trying to talk here the way I'd talk to any group of friends/acquaintances who have common interests, and I'm always prepared to be told I'm wrong, if I'm told why. The learning process never ends. An overreaction on my part; sorry. Thanks for the Sara Vaughn/Lester Young Blue Note CD recommendation, among others.

I like that recording also. There's another by this group that's quite good called Blues Roots--I don't think it has been reissued on CD though.

For the Love of Peace is a fabulous recording. His new one, the Art of Improvisation is another good one. One of my favorite groups, having gotten to see them live several times at the Caravan of Dreams, was the Moffett Family Jazz Band--and their recordings on Venus, Magic of Love (especially this one) and Africano, are worth seeking out.

That is a really good one.

He played at the Arcadia Theater in Dallas (now burned down but a relatively small old movie theater venue), I think around 1987 or 1988--and a few years later at an outdoor festival in 1990 or '91--both were quite enjoyable concerts. The latter featured the band with Foley--Miles' stripped down trumpet style of this period sounded exceptionally beautiful. The earlier concert was very different, very dense music which seemed like a throwback to the '70s era electric sound.

I like this period of Miles--this looks like a pretty good compilation, with several favorite tracks from this era--Amandla, Mr. Pastorius, Hannibal, Tutu, the Siesta medley.

It would be great to have a good recording by the Adams/Pullen/Hamiett Bluiett Mingus quintet. The fact that there hasn't been a reissue of the full Carnegie Hall concert makes me wonder if Atlantic even has the tapes anymore.
