  1. Happy birthday, and have fun in the Big Apple!
  2. Well to each their own of course but I have come to really like every session. . . Massey Hall. .. Thad Jones. . . Hazel Scott. .. John Dennis. . . Jackie Paris. . . all those bones. . . man, this is jampacked! I'm with you, great box--in addition to the Bohemia and Massey Hall sessions, I'm partial to the Thad Jones sessions, the Jimmy Knepper with Joe Maini session, and the unreleased session with Gene Shaw, Shafi Hadi and Pepper Adams.
  3. Chico Hamilton and the Players (Blue Note)--with Arthur Blythe
  4. He's one of the best around today, on a good night, which unfortunately does not equate to one of the best ever.
  5. If only the actual festival has been recorded...
  6. He doesn't disappoint me. His best recordings (in my opinion) are Chasin' the Gypsy, Layin' in the Cut, Live at Baker's Lounge, and (under the leadership of Ronald Shannon Jackson), What Spirit Say.
  7. You might want to get allaboutjazz New York off the allaboutjazz website (about the most thorough day by day jazz listing for New York), and also pick up a copy of Time Out New York when you get there. There's usually something totally unexpected that pops up, so stay flexible.
  8. In addition, you are only nine blocks south of the Jazz Record Center, which is on 26th Street, off of Seventh Avenue. http://www.jazzrecordcenter.com/
  9. At 17th and Seventh Avenue, you are a short walk from at least five jazz clubs-- the Village Vanguard, Fat Cat, Smalls, 55 Bar, and Sweet Rhythm.
  10. Hanrahan has an interview in the latest Downbeat and talks about becoming active again in recording.
  11. Yes, I have it on a Japanese CD reissue, with all the stage talk edited out.
  12. Is that take different from the one on "Mingus" - I have that. I old the Candid Dolphy CD because it duplicated so many tracks, and I didn't need all those alternates. If one of you could add timings, I could compare. No, there is only one take of Stormy Weather.
  13. Double-damn ... that is wicked Any idea if it is commercially available? Yes, that is available. There are at least four Freddie King DVDs available. I believe that this one is included in the Experience Hendrix release--Live in Europe. There are also three Vestapol DVDs-- The Beat 1966; In Concert, Dallas Texas Jan. 20th 1973; and Live at the Sugarbowl Sept. 22, 1972. All are worthy--the best is probably The Beat 1966, featuring Freddie's numerous appearances on a local Dallas teen dance show. Having on one occasion been at a club, sitting directly in front of Freddie King's amplifier, I must say he had the most incredible single note sound on guitar I've ever heard.
  14. Monday May 1--I would pick Mike Stern Trio at the 55 Bar. This is some really intense music. I went with moderate expectations last year and was pretty much blown away. Tuesday--the Mingus Big Band for certain.
  15. From mingusmingusmingus.com: New MBB and Legacy recordings Mon, Feb. 13 2006 The Mingus Big Band made a live recording at the Blue Note in Tokyo, New Year's Eve, Dec. 3lst, 2005-06. This recording, together with the Charles Mingus live album,"Music Written for Monterey, Not Played, Performed at UCLA, l965" --which has never before appeared on CD -- will be issued simultaneously in September 2006 on the SueMingusMusic label, distributed by Sunnyside and Universal Music. Together, these two albums offer an opportunity to hear Charles Mingus performing his own music live in l965, as well as today's musicians carrying his huge legacy of composition into the future.
  16. The track listing of this great set is here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/samples/B...ing=UTF8#disc_1
  17. I can't believe everyone doesn't have this already (along with The Great Concert of Charles Mingus). There's supposedly another complete concert recording of this group at Cornell University and Sue Mingus has claimed she is going to release it, though it never seems to happen.
  18. Paul Desmond with the Modern Jazz Quartet, The Only Recorded Performance (Finesse)
  19. The pickles at the Carnegie Deli on Seventh Avenue are the best I've ever had.
  20. You must not have Mingus at Monterey, on which Lou Blackburn plays.
  21. I assume you are aware of the Uptown release, Charlie Parker, Montreal 1953, which has the audio of this appearance.
  22. Fascinating. My order for the Tom Archia has been placed. I also recommend the excellent Marion Abernathy Classics CD, most of which features the Hot Lips Page Band, with Mr. Archia in the band.
  23. "Satisfying" "Video feetage"? I see.
  24. I can't tell much difference--but either the LP or the CD are good enough to be considered listenable, and this is a great concert. My favorite part was always the sequence on side 2 of the LP, where Ellington says, "And now our Portraits," leading into Portrait of Bert Williams, Portrait of Bojangles, Portrait of Florence Mills, then onto a great version of Koko, and then on to two Strayhorn pieces, "Dirge," which is the bleakest piece of music I've ever heard, and another great Johnny Come Lately. Of course, side 5 of the old LP set, with Bakiff, Jack the Bear, Cotton Tail and Day Dream, I like almost as much.
