My favorite CD/Vinyl store in New York is the Jazz Record Center. It's on 26th Street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues (It's on the eighth floor and not obvious from outside, so it is a little hard to find the first time). http://www.jazzrecordcenter.com/

Ben Roethlisberger badly hurt in a motorcycle crash
kh1958 replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Roethlsberger's injuries included a broken jaw, nine-inch laceration on the back of his head, broken teeth and knee damage, ESPN reported, quoting an unnamed police source. -
The Poll Winners, Barney Kessel, Ray Brown and Shelly Manne, Exploring the Scene (Contemporary)--This sure is a great sounding recording, beautifully capturing the trio.

Hey, c'mon...he was elderly by then and probably ill as well. When I saw him in Cambridge, MA in the 1980's he was fantastic. And in his prime he was even better. Same experience here--a fantastic quartet with Odean Pope, Cecil Bridgewater and Tyrone Brown--an hour long version of Scott Free was devastating.

I saw her last Thursday night at Sweet Rhythm in a quartet with Mark Helias on bass, Matt Wilson on drums, and Dawn Clement on keyboards. I enjoyed the concert very much, including her use of electronics. I do rather like Matt Wilson as well. However, attendance was very poor.

if its on CAPITOL, is it from L.A???

I would compromise and put West Coast jazz recordings made in New York in your Argo/Delmark pile. -
For those who live in Dallas, the Virgin Megastore at Mockingbird Station is closing, and they've reduced everything in the store by 50%. Still a pretty good jazz selection (lots of Blue Notes, for example).
-
The first two CDs I bought (in 1984) were: Max Roach Quartet--In the Light (Soul Note); Art Blakey--A Night In Tunisia (Bobby Watson edition of Jazz Messengers)--Philips. They both still play fine.

I remember one night Albert King was at the club (on Guadalupe), in late 1982 or early 1983. The second set, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie took over on drums and bass, Stevie Ray Vaughn moved in on guitar--that was a pretty intense set as I recall. Then in May of 1983, just before I was moving back to Dallas, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells came in for two consecutive weekends, with an appearance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festval in between--I was there every night for sure, to hear that great three guitar band. I hadn't been back in quite a few years, and never went after the club left Guadalupe Street.

That's too bad. I saw Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Albert King, Paul Butterfield, Mel Brown, Stevie Ray Vaughn and others at his club.

Alright, as long as we're on that subject, something I've always wondered: is this Benny Green who wrote those liners the same Benny Green the piano player who put out an album called "These Are Soulful Days?" Or are there three different Benny Greens: one the trombone player, one the liner note writer, and one the piano player? These are three different Benny Greens.

For the most part, I don't care for Zorn, one exception being (with Bobby Previte on drums) the Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet, Voodoo (on Black Saint). Bobby Previte is another another story. He has a large body of fascinating work. These are recommended: Claude's Late Morning, Empty Suits, Music of the Moscow Circus, Counterclockwise, The 23 Constellations of Joan Miro, Too Close to the Pole, Just Add Water, Hue and Cry, Slay the Suitors, and Dangerous RIP.

Bobby Previte is at the 55 Bar on Friday, June 2, with a different band. Since I'm expecting to be in New York that night, I'm hoping to attend. Bobby Previte's "Strike" Bobby Previte - Drums, Briggan Krauss - Alto Sax, David Binney - Alto Saxophone, Marco Benevento - Hammond Organ "Previte is a serious composer with the heart of a roadhouse rocker" -the Village Voice The drummer debuts a new Electric quartet modeled after his acoustic Bump band, with Sex Mob master Bernstein, sax great Binney, and rising star Benevento ripping up the organ.

Bobby Previte Coalition Of The Willing
kh1958 replied to baltostar's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I saw a similar band at the 55 Bar last year--with Previte, Skerik, Jamie Saft, and a Russian guitarist whose name I don't recall--they were great. The new CD is good but kind of pales in comparison, except for the last track, the spectacular Anthem for Andrea. -
In that case, I won't go looking for the CD (I have the LP anyway).
-
Metronome All Stars 1956 (Clef)--sidelong jam on Billie's Bounce, with Mingus and Art Blakey, plus Serge Chaloff, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Tony Scott, Thad Jones, Tal Farlow, Lee Konitz, Eddie Bert...

That Salle Pleyel concert is great--one of my favorite Dizzy Gillespie recordings.
-
Dizzy Gillespie on the French Rivera--Philips--Mono but very clean, nice sounding copy (just bought it for $8).
-
I know I've seen him with the Mingus Big Band on more than one occasion, but he might have played one solo per night--and he didn't make a big impression on me (unlike when, for example, Jack Walrath or Eddie Henderson is in the MBB trumpet section).
-
I saw him leading his trio (with Tyrone Brown) at the Knitting Factory a few years back during one of their jazz festivals--it was their smallest venue at the time, just a bar really--the audience was almost nonexistent, but he sure sounded good.
-
Skipping into the 1980s, there are two quartet albums that I really like--Temptation (Kirk Lightsey-Freddie Hubbard Quartet, on Timeless), and Outpost (on Enja). Freddie sounds great on both of these.

A new Mac would be great, but my imac has worked so flawlessly and is such a joy to use, I feel no urgency. As for the Nano, that is an overpriced product and it is folly to buy one. Get the 30gb Ipod or the 60gb and ignore overpriced small capacity products.
-
I saw Freddie live many times in quartet and quintets, and I actually don't think he ever ran out of ideas.
-
Yeah...and that organist is Billy Gardner reincarnate! Those guys really have Braith's BN recordings in their veins! (and yes Lon, I am a non-recovering Braith-o-holic) If I were to buy just one (for now), would the Barcelona disc be the best choice?

FS: Roland Kirk Complete Mercury 11 CD OOP box!
kh1958 replied to robert h.'s topic in Offering and Looking For...
It is indeed a great box set (one of my favorites), but since I have one already, I won't be greedy.
