    Bobby Previte

For the most part, I don't care for Zorn, one exception being (with Bobby Previte on drums) the Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet, Voodoo (on Black Saint). Bobby Previte is another another story. He has a large body of fascinating work. These are recommended: Claude's Late Morning, Empty Suits, Music of the Moscow Circus, Counterclockwise, The 23 Constellations of Joan Miro, Too Close to the Pole, Just Add Water, Hue and Cry, Slay the Suitors, and Dangerous RIP.

    Bobby Previte

Bobby Previte is at the 55 Bar on Friday, June 2, with a different band. Since I'm expecting to be in New York that night, I'm hoping to attend. Bobby Previte's "Strike" Bobby Previte - Drums, Briggan Krauss - Alto Sax, David Binney - Alto Saxophone, Marco Benevento - Hammond Organ "Previte is a serious composer with the heart of a roadhouse rocker" -the Village Voice The drummer debuts a new Electric quartet modeled after his acoustic Bump band, with Sex Mob master Bernstein, sax great Binney, and rising star Benevento ripping up the organ.
  3. I saw a similar band at the 55 Bar last year--with Previte, Skerik, Jamie Saft, and a Russian guitarist whose name I don't recall--they were great. The new CD is good but kind of pales in comparison, except for the last track, the spectacular Anthem for Andrea.
  4. In that case, I won't go looking for the CD (I have the LP anyway).
  5. Metronome All Stars 1956 (Clef)--sidelong jam on Billie's Bounce, with Mingus and Art Blakey, plus Serge Chaloff, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Tony Scott, Thad Jones, Tal Farlow, Lee Konitz, Eddie Bert...
  6. That Salle Pleyel concert is great--one of my favorite Dizzy Gillespie recordings.
  7. Dizzy Gillespie on the French Rivera--Philips--Mono but very clean, nice sounding copy (just bought it for $8).

    Alex Sipiagin

I know I've seen him with the Mingus Big Band on more than one occasion, but he might have played one solo per night--and he didn't make a big impression on me (unlike when, for example, Jack Walrath or Eddie Henderson is in the MBB trumpet section).
  9. I saw him leading his trio (with Tyrone Brown) at the Knitting Factory a few years back during one of their jazz festivals--it was their smallest venue at the time, just a bar really--the audience was almost nonexistent, but he sure sounded good.
  10. Skipping into the 1980s, there are two quartet albums that I really like--Temptation (Kirk Lightsey-Freddie Hubbard Quartet, on Timeless), and Outpost (on Enja). Freddie sounds great on both of these.
  11. A new Mac would be great, but my imac has worked so flawlessly and is such a joy to use, I feel no urgency. As for the Nano, that is an overpriced product and it is folly to buy one. Get the 30gb Ipod or the 60gb and ignore overpriced small capacity products.
  12. I saw Freddie live many times in quartet and quintets, and I actually don't think he ever ran out of ideas.
  13. Yeah...and that organist is Billy Gardner reincarnate! Those guys really have Braith's BN recordings in their veins! (and yes Lon, I am a non-recovering Braith-o-holic) If I were to buy just one (for now), would the Barcelona disc be the best choice?
  14. It is indeed a great box set (one of my favorites), but since I have one already, I won't be greedy.
  15. One and the same. He's got some health issues but he's hanging in there! m~ He also played with Wes Mongomery.
  16. Charles Mingus Quintet, Flowers for a Lady (George Adams, Hamiett Bluiett, Don Pullen and Dannie Richmond)
  17. I like Red Clay the best (for the spectacular title cut), then Keep Your Soul Together (I think you are underappreciating this one), then First Light (again mostly for the title track).
  18. Sidney Bechet, Blue Note Volume 2--RVG and the ear, with a 1966 Blue Note inner sleeve--sounds rather great.
  19. Savant is the sister label to High Note. They are actually more like the successor to the Muse label. In addition to excellent recordings by Charles Earland and Melvin Sparks, I like all of their David Fathead Newman recordings, also I have a really good James Spaudling record on the label (The Smile of the Serpent), and two really terrific Carlos Garnett recordings. There are quite a few others I would like to hear. These are two of my favorite current independent jazz labels.

I would add this one to your list--Charles Earland, Slammin' and Jammin'

    Melvin Sparks

    Yes, definitely!
  22. No but since they don't release anything but anthologies and recordings that have been reissued over and over again, I would imagine it's an anthology of his recordings on Prestige as a leader.
  23. found, bought and listened to the moondoc. quit enjoyable, thanks!!! now if only i could find the george adams! Did you ever find the George Adams? I picked it up on vinyl when it first came out. It's really worth searching for! I believe that George Adams, Paradise Space Shuttle is available on CD from Timeless.
  24. Ron Burton sounds great on the newly released Kirk live recording, Brotherman in the Fatherland.

    Jane Ira Bloom

I saw her several years ago at the Museum of Modern Art in a trio (Mark Dresser, Bobby Previte), and she (and the group) were most impressive.
