Duke Ellington Carnegie Hall Concert Jan 1943
kh1958 replied to skeith's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I can't tell much difference--but either the LP or the CD are good enough to be considered listenable, and this is a great concert. My favorite part was always the sequence on side 2 of the LP, where Ellington says, "And now our Portraits," leading into Portrait of Bert Williams, Portrait of Bojangles, Portrait of Florence Mills, then onto a great version of Koko, and then on to two Strayhorn pieces, "Dirge," which is the bleakest piece of music I've ever heard, and another great Johnny Come Lately. Of course, side 5 of the old LP set, with Bakiff, Jack the Bear, Cotton Tail and Day Dream, I like almost as much. -
I always keep a variety of music on my player, also knowing that I won't feel the need to listen to all of my Miles or Coltrane albums or all of my Mosaic sets in the same week. So there is no point of carrying all of them with me. You also have to be aware of the technological limitations. AFAIK there are currently no 100GB hard drives in the 1.8" format that Ipods uses, and when they become available they will be quite expensive. Fuji, the market leader for 1.8" drives, hopes to be able to launch a 120GB drive by September 2007. That's the current capacity of the biggest laptop hard drives (2.5"). 60 gb is not enough because I do not wish to be deleting and replacing music from the ipod constantly, I only wish to add music. I wish to carry all of my favorite Coltrane, Bird, Mingus, Ellington, etc. music with me, not only a few selected recordings. The fact that my ipod has all of my favorite Mingus and Bird tracks (i.e., most of their recordings) is a great benefit. The more capacity, the better.

Ornette sounds great on this one--Tears Inside and the title cut are my two favorite tracks, but a really fine recording. And yes, you need to get Something Else as well.

NFL 2006 - Offseason/Draft/Free Agency
kh1958 replied to Aggie87's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Dallascowboys.com already has Terrell Owens Cowboys jerseys for sale. Hopefully just a coincidence, but the day after TO's arrival we are experiencing severe rain and flooding. -
Well said! He's an undersung great, one of my favorites, and fortunately, I've been able to hear him live at least a dozen times over the years.
-
I've been wanting to see that one also, but have never had the opportunity.

I certainly hope the Cowboys don't sign T.O.--that would be a big disappointment. They do have $23 million of cap space, so expect a few free agent signings. -
Those Americas, Blue Bird and Pithycanthropus Erectus, are actually pretty damn great. The title track to the former I used to spin all the time... Those are favorites of mine also. That horn section (Charles McPherson, Bobby Jones, and Eddie Preston) is fine by me anytime.

There's a live version of Sugar on the remastered CD of Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar" that is really good as well. I have a CTI LP, Freddie Hubbard and Stanley Turrentine in Concert, Volume 1, but I recall it as a disappointment.

I really can't imagine, it sounds good to me, and I like the group, which I believe is pretty much the same group as another good one from that period, harder to obtain--Sonny Rollins in Japan.
-
I haven't heard Easy Living, but of the other three mentioned (Horn Culture, Next Album and The Cutting Edge), my favorite is definitely Horn Culture, an excellent record and the very first Sonny Rollins record I ever bought.
-
Just my opinion, of course. This was around 1982--I recall reading all this praise in the local entertainment paper and being extremely disappointed (live jazz not being very available in Austin at that time).
-
I saw that guy in Austin years ago--one of the worst concerts I've ever seen, and a truly awful saxophonist.
-
I haven't really found a good online source (or for that matter, any other source) that has a deep catalog of Classics in stock, with good prices. I've ordered a few from Tower. You might also try J&R.

The sound is variable, but it's a very fine and valuable series. I have fifty or so in the series and wish I had alot more. The Blues series is also excellent.

Dannie Richmond Quintet (the last Mingus band, with Cameron Brown)--Dionysus (Red).

If you live in a city with no jazz clubs, it is amazing to hear complaints about a place which has such great music like the Iridium does.
-
The only time I've not gotten a good seat there (and I do not eat dinner there) is on a Friday or Saturday. Also, the waitress I usually have is very friendly and remembers me, even though it can be months between visits to New York for me. It is an expensive club (comparable to Birdland and the Blue Note). I like it a bit better than Birdland and definitely more than the Blue Note. The Mingus Big Band only plays Tuesday nights, by the way.
-
I like the Iridium. I don't like it as much as the Village Vanguard or Jazz Standard, but it's a fine club, and I wouldn't hesitate to go there. Don't be discouraged, I've seen alot of excellent music there. Last October, I saw Charles Tolliver and Billy Harper there together, and the Mingus Big Band. You will probably get a better seat and the house is unlikely to be turned after the first set if you go on Wednesday, Thursday or Sunday.

I just had this print of Jason Moran and Bandwagon, available from his website, framed, and it is very nice. http://www.jasonmoran.com/store.html -
I recommend the Steve Kuhn.

What Young Lion records will hold up?
kh1958 replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Those Jack DeJohnette "Special Edition" groups in the 1980s really were special. The two editions I got to see had John Purcell, Howard Johnson and Rufus Reid, with either Marty Ehrlich or David Murray. -

Chico Freeman was established before the Young Lion movement, with several albums on India Navigation and other labels. Whether he still qualifies as a Young Lion, I have no opinion. As for his album with Wynton Marsalis--as a student journalist (using that term very loosely) I had an opportunity to interview Wynton Marsalis in the spring of 1982. He told me that he did not enjoy recording that album because "Chico Freeman did not know the changes to his own tunes! He did not know the changes to his own tunes!" Wynton was quite emotional about it. I'd rather listen to Chico Freeman than Wynton. I saw Mr. Freeman perform live a couple of years ago, in a group with Geri Allen, Richard Davis and Andrew Cyrille--that was assuredly better than anything I've ever heard from Wynton Marsalis. -
The LP Basic Miles was the second or third jazz recordings I purchased.
