  3. Take Two: Tyshawn Sorey Reimagines Max Roach's 'Members, Don’t Git Weary' hosted by Gilles Peterson Wednesday, January 10th, 2024 public records 233 Butler St, Brooklyn, NY 11217 7 PM Doors | 8 PM Show $35 GA Advance | $45 GA Day of Show Sold Out Pique-nique and Winter Jazzfest present the musical shapeshifter and renowned drummer Tyshawn Sorey, performing Max Roach’s classic album 'Members, Don’t Git Weary'. Part of the "Take Two" deep-listening series, the evening will consist of an uninterrupted playback of the 1968 album followed by a live reinterpretation by Sorey and his sextet, connecting the dots between record culture and live music culture. Tyshawn’s ensemble includes highly acclaimed young musicians including trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, saxophonist Mark Shim, pianist Sullivan Fortner, and bassist Matt Brewer, plus guest vocalist Fay Victor. Tyshawn Sorey is a 2017 MacArthur Fellow known for his precision and inventiveness on the drum kit and an extraordinary ability to blend composition and improvisation. He has performed internationally with his own ensembles, as well as artists such as John Zorn, Vijay Iyer, and Roscoe Mitchell. We will pay homage to one of the all-time masters, Max Roach in his centennial year, and his 1968 album 'Members, Don’t Git Weary', which featured a new generation of future heavyweights; Gary Bartz, Charles Tolliver, Stanley Cowell, Jymie Merritt, and Andy Bey. Tolliver and Cowell would go on to form the seminal Strata-East label and in many ways this record embodies the template of that sound. Recently reissued on Gilles Peterson’s Arc Records, the DJ and broadcaster will present live liner notes at the top of the show and will DJ into the night to close it out.
  4. Here she is... Fri, Jan 26 @ 8PM prudential hall | betty wold johnson stage The revolutionary 1960 album We Insist!: Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite explored issues of social justice and racial inequality through the lens of jazz and poetry. In celebration of the centennial of Max Roach — drummer, bebop pioneer and civil rights activist — this landmark work is reimagined for today’s world. Musical director Nasheet Waits (of Max’s percussion ensemble M’Boom) is joined by vocalist Cassandra Wilson, poets Sonia Sanchez and Saul Williams, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini and bassist Eric Revis. Experience the modern evolution of the Freedom Now Suite, a piece that continues to live, expand and inspire across generations. #MAXROACH100

  9. 12 in my case. I had heard Hendrix because my older brother had Are You Experienced and Electric Ladyland. Band of Gypsies was the first Hendrix LP that I purchased.
  10. Now I have received an email from them appearing to indicate that they have reshipped my entire order--three Tone Poets and a CD, when only the CD was the missing item.
  11. On disc four of this. For me, this is the best Hendrix set ever released. His best band (Band of Gypsies) in four concerts on two consecutive days, awesome guitar, and great sonics.

    Coryell

Unfortunately I don't recall the specific compositions they played. I recall Vic Juris as one of the other guitarists, but not the others. My main memory is of one Coryell solo that transcended every other that evening, and the other four guitarists staring at him with looks of admiration/amazement during that solo.
  13. I ordered 3 Tone Poets and a CD in the same sale; the LPs arrived without the CD before Christmas. I received the same email as you reference; I assume they are only referencing the CD omitted from the first shipment in my case.
  14. The Great Concert is great. At some point I realized that at the time of this concert, my family lived only about 80 miles from Paris--U.S. Army stationed in Orleans. Unfortunately, I was only 6 and not yet a Mingus fan.

    Coryell

I recollect seeing him in person four times. 1992: A solo concert at a bar in Arlington, Texas. I believe it was a stop on the way to visiting Corpus Christi, his home town. He played electric guitar and acoustic. It was very good. 1994: Five Guitars Play Mingus at the Fez in the Time Cafe. This was a pleasure to hear. 1996: Two sets of his quartet at the Blue Note. My favorite of the four concerts. 2006: A trio with Victor Bailey and Lennie White at the Granada Theater in Dallas. For whatever reason, this concert was a disaster. Music was not working at all.

  19. I saw her at about the time of New Moon Daughter at a small club in Deep Ellum, with an outstanding group (I recall Charlie Burnham, Brandon Ross, Lonnie Plaxico) and got to meet her; she was very nice. A few years later I heard her when she played at the Caravan of Dreams. And many years later I saw her at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, playing her Billie Holiday tribute material. All three concerts were terrific, and there was no trace of diva behavior or any mention of politics.
  20. i gave up on car CDs and just listen to either the Sirius/XM Real Jazz channel or stream from Bandcamp.
