  1. I just got this, and it's good. The one glaring problem to my ears is the very out-of-tune piano- it is a significant distraction on an otherwise very fine session.
  2. He does like that A-G-E-D-C melodic sequence over the C7-FMA portion of the changes, doesn't he? Besides looking at the specific harmonic content, it's fun to just watch the contour of the lines. What a MF!
  3. Well, it's not 99 cents, but if you gotta have it.....Giant Box
  4. I just saw this version of Giant Steps. I searched and didn't see that it had been posted here before, but if it has, let me know and I'll delete this. It is pretty cool, though.
  5. up for: Hey fool! Don't you even read your own damn birthday thread?
  6. Any neighborhood kids/pets been reported missing?
  7. I searched and didn't find a thread that discussed this in the general sense, so..... Since my divorce I'm no longer part of the big insurance package we had (homeowners, auto etc.) and because of that my auto-only insurance rate is MUCH higher (almost doubled!). Screw THAT! I've been shopping around and have found a dramatic variation in rates. I guess my question is, do the places that have the lower rates (like Progressive, for example) still have a reasonable level of service? Do they drop you once you have to make a claim and BS like that? My driving and credit records are excellent, so I'm not concerned about that. I just don't want the "deal" if it ends up being a crappy one. But there is enough of a difference that I'm considering going with the lower option, if it seems to be worth it. Since I did one of those online rate comparisons, I've been getting calls from any and everyone who's in the biz. Advice, please. Thank you.
  8. Pulled pork sammich w/Gates BBQ sauce and slaw on top.
  9. And some of the older ones do both at the same time.
  10. Another good book along similar lines.....
  11. Like we were discussing, Joe, it's an approach to dealing not just w/music but also with life.
  12. Sorry to hear that. Young John Young has been an integral part of the Chicago jazz scene for such a long time. I've also heard that Jodie Christian has some health problems- it that true? Nice pics, Mark. Great to see Vonski still goin' at it!
  13. Great thread Joe! There is much to discuss regarding Kenny- his solo and trio playing, his arranging/composing for various ensembles, his ideology about playing, his recent loss of his daughter. His latest CD (Lawn Chair Society, mentioned above) just arrived in the mail today, and the project is dedicated to his daughter Katheryn and has some very nice pictures of her and Kenny in the liners. It would be hard to have a Kenny Werner thread without getting into a discussion of his philosophical ideas. I have really enjoyed his book Effortless Mastery- he takes a very Zen-like approach to playing, especially in the area of self-judgement and all the potential negative effects that process can have. I've learned about dealing with life as well as music from reading this book and others along the same lines (like Inner Game of Tennis, for one). Anyone else checked this out?
  14. I really enjoy the Werner side. There is some very creative ensemble writing, great playing and the recording sounds very good IMHO. How'd you happen on to that one Joe? I just ordered his latest ("Lawn Chair Society") w/Scott Colley, Brain Blade, Dave Douglas and Chris Potter. I think it's about time for Kenny to have a thread. He's a great player (and thinker). Sorry, off topic. I do plan to get the M/M ASAP. I really liked the first one.
  15. I second Lon's request for a Boland/Clarke box set. Mosaic, are you listening? Related thread
  16. Hi Tom! (I hope you don't mind me using your non-fowl name!) Happy Birthday! (I hope you have a good one!) Have a great day! (enjoy yourself!) And many more...(if that's cool with you!) Anyway, hope you have a great birthday! (no matter what Chuck says! ) So Rooster (Tom), I hope you get to do something fun today (well, "fun" is such a relative concept, but you know what I mean) and I wish you all the best (I really do) and may you get all your wishes (although I'm shocked you don't have the Tolliver Select yet) for years to come (and many more!) ( )
  17. Well, even though you guys think it's not good, I'm still curious!
  18. Is that the same as "one brick short of a load"?
  19. Fedchock just sent me a copy- it's excellent. Some very interesting versions of Embreaceable You, Moment's Notice, Alfie's Theme et al. I'll look forward to your comments, John!
  20. Having long been a fan of Miles' soundtrack, I've been curious to see the film with the music in context. I bought the Criterion version- it's a two disc set which contains extras including interviews with the director, actors and sesssion pianist Rene Urtreger, footage of Miles and Louis Malle from the soundtrack recording session, a new video about the score w/Gary Giddins and Jon Faddis and a student film by Malle called Crazeology, featuring the Parker tune. I just got it, haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but it looks pretty good.
  21. Wow. I had NO chance of getting THAT right! Guy, you really bring a lot of valuable information to this board (in addition to your charming personality!). Thank you!
  22. How do you pronounce "Humair"? I've always said "You-Mare", or is it "Hue-Mare", or something else entirely? Regardless, I do love his playing! Wow, I just looked up his bio and he's nearly 70! Is he still active? He's sure participated in a lot of great music over his lifetime.
  23. A little shameless self-promotion, please indulge me..... John and I will be performing at the Green Mill in Chicago on Friday, March 30th and Saturday, March 31st. With us will be Jeremy Kahn, piano, Kelly Sill, bass and Tim Davis, drums. We'll also be at the Blue Room in KC on Monday, April 2nd. In KC we'll have Roger Wilder, piano, Bob Bowman, bass and Tim Davis on drums. It's the Blue 'n Green tour! I've been looking forward to this for a long time....John and I have a lot of fun playing together. It will be more trombone than you could possibly want to hear. But in a good way. I hope to see some board members at both venues! Please come and say hello, I'll buy you a beer! Thanks, Paul
