  4. A very Happy Birthday to a longtime poster who has been MIA since 3/19/05. Are you out there somewhere? Please check in...........
  5. I was at a rehearsal and came home expecting to see the Bears cleaning up, but they were down 23-10.
  6. Holy shit! No offensive touchdowns, 6 turnovers, down 20 at the end of the third quarter, and they still won. Either the Bears have a guardian angel, or the Cardinals are cursed! Matt Leinart played a great game. Rex Grossman looked terrible. Unbelievable game!
  7. ...and I'm just the man for the job!
  8. You won't regret it!
  9. At the gig, actually listening to the band (some of these were Woody Herman gigs): Harvey Korman (hung out), Kevin Spacey (sat in and hung out), Sam Kinison (hung out), Jack Lemmon (sat in), Jack Nicholson, Andie McDowell, Melanie Griffith, Harry Connick, John Cusack, Clint Eastwood. Also the guys who played the Chicago detectives in "The Fugitive" used to hang out at the Green Mill every now and then. Just "in the room", not really paying attention to the band: Michael Jordan, Robert DeNiro, Madonna (pretty much everyone else in the room also stopped paying attention to the band when these folks walked in).
  10. Very much so. (sorry to go off-topic)
  11. Check out the current AMG samples of this one. Definitely not the right recording!
  12. Happy Birthday John! I'll listen to some Fontana in your honor today!
  13. Great pics, Ron!
  14. Randy, you gettin' enough sleep, man?
  15. Friday night. I made up a batch of my late mom's potato-corn chowder. A couple modifications- I start with a couple slices of diced bacon in the pot- when it's crispy, I add the onions, then the potatoes and some water/chicken broth. Later I add the corn, seasoning (Old Bay!) and then I add shrimp, clams, crabmeat and some chopped up pollock (or whatever fish I end up with), so it becomes a fish chowder. Even though I live in the midwest and therefore have to use some canned seafood, I must say it's still mighty tasty. Comfort food for a chilly evening. Cheers!
  16. I guess you could say Tobi and Sam had a vagenda.
  17. It is Friday the 13th.
  18. Now you're scaring me.
  19. I think Sangrey's comment was of a self-effacing nature, not directed at anyone else. As far as chewy's behavior, well, that's just chewy. He sometimes goes "postal".
  20. What is the general criteria for a tune to become a standard? Must it survive the passage of time, or be frequently played/recorded? Is "Happy Birthday" a standard?
  21. Yep. So "Invitation" or "Stella" or "Green Dolphin Street" or "All The Things You Are" aren't considered jazz standards?
  22. I'm partial to this one.
  23. I just skimmed through the thread again and it seems to me that the vast majority of tunes mentioned can indeed be considered jazz standards, at least by my experience. Not sure what the criteria is to separate "jazz" from "pop". So many of the tunes we consider standards started out in movies and shows (but now exist primarily in the jazz repertoire), does that make them pop tunes? Is a "jazz" standard something that has been composed specifically for jazz musicians, like Monk's tunes?
  24. 30% off (through 10/18) They keep putting these up, so I'll keep posting 'em here. Also, I believe they're having a 25% educator discount (I think it's only 10% for DVDs, though )starting today (for a week or so). If you teach at all and have an ID or pay stub you can get the discount. Now whether this can be used in conjunction w/any of the above coupons, I don't know.
