I wrote an arrangement of a Milton Nascimento tune called "Don Quixote". It was on the MN recording "Miltons" and also the Charles Fambrough recording "The Proper Angle". Very nice tune. -
UNC Jazz Fest info Featured artists will include Maria Schneider Orchestra, Jim McNeeley W/the UNC big band, Cedar Walton trio w/Steve Turre, New York Voices, extra guests Richie Perry and Greg Gisbert and a big band made up of participating artists, clinicians (yours truly included, they're playing a commissioned arrangement I just finished). Should be a good hang. Anyone else going to be there?

Thank you everyone, even though it's not my birthday. -
Happy Birthday! May you feast on a hot Bevo samwich today.

Oooooooooohhhhh.... Could we consider the possibility that the pulse he fucks with (sorry, my * key's not working ) is entirely internal, and that the rhythm section is (mostly) just there to provide "context" for the listener? I think we could! That's what I meant (and didn't say very well) - that the rhythm section provides the context for us listeners to appreciate his flexible sense of time. I didn't mean to say his time was dependent on the rhythm section, I'd never imply that. It's intrinsic, and I love the frame of reference that the rhythm section provides to further appreciate that.

I passed over this one, and I'm a big Rollins fan. For me much of the attraction of Sonny is the way way he f*cks with the time, and that's more readily possible when there's a rhythm section to provide the pulse to f*ck with. I can't imagine anything Sonny does as ever being considered "worthless", however............

Just received Optimista myself- now I have that and 4 Seasons. I'm going to digest those two for awhile. I listened to 4 Seasons on my road trip a few days ago and really enjoyed it. Besides her engaging singing I'm really digging the arrangements. Her husband Alex Sipiagin makes some great contributions. My first impression (before knowing it was him) was "here's a cat who is into Woody Shaw!". Later on he had a Milesean moment that was also impressive. Her voice (IMHO) is reminiscent of Flora Purim at times, Chaka Khan at times, Esther Satterfield (remember her?) at times. The tunes are (once again, IMHO) also at times reminiscent of the early RTF stuff. It's sure fun to get excited about something new!

Thanks for the kind words Glenn. You're doing a great job out there in NM, your band sounded great. I only wish you could have played some tenor, but that's what happens when you run the show. All work and no play (well, maybe a little play.... ) And I had the opportunity to meet the future Mrs. Duke City. She's a lovely lady, lots of fun and quite the chef. How'd you manage to bamboozle her? And I second your comment about the great folks who inhabit this place. Never a dull moment. -

....or maybe they're 11 months ahead of the times. It's possible. But doubtful. -

Yes, this was a bit of a surprise to me too! I think my good buddy Miles251 suffered a bit of brain damage in the Iowa City tornadoes! I appreciate the thoughts, but my birthday was March 10th. Gifts are still being accepted though......... -
Not sure about that. It seems that at least half the set is no longer available on cd. And what you can find is sold at high prices. In that case, the defense rests. Act now.

It's great. The sound is excellent. there are no problems whatsoever with the sound. No fence-riding on this one. It sounds MF great. Hell, the original releases sounded great IMHO. Most importantly the music is sublime. If you pass on this because you're concerned about the sound quality, you will miss out on some great music, although you probably will be able to piece together much of it from other sources. I would still love this Mosaic if the sound was only half as good as it is. But it's not- it's twice as good as it would be if it was only half as good as it's not. Get it, conn! :rsmile: EDIT: Conn, you like your Crusaders Mosiac, right? Well, Wayne Henderson copped A LOT from JJ!

I ordered the Lloyd (among others)- I wonder if they'll wait 'til the end of the month and ship everything together or make two separate shipments?

I did like some of his early 70s stuff- Friends and Love, Together, Land of Make Believe and the small group side Alive. He had some good sidemen- Gerry Niewood was an excellent player, as was Chris Vadala. Wonder what those guys are up to these days? I liked the big orchestral sound of the large group recordings. I guess I eventually "graduated" to things that were more "significant" in the contemporary sense, but I still enjoy pulling out some of those sides every now and then. When AM radio found him (his Feels So Good era) he lost me though. EDIT: I also liked Esther Satterfield, a very nice vocalist who worked with Chuck- what ever happened to her?

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Free For All replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
"Tromboned out" yet BF? Yeah..........just about (not that there's anything wrong with it). Have to cool it for a while. Hey, even I had to pace myself a bit with that one. It's a lot of music to digest in a marathon listening session. Actually, I rarely listen to an entire Mosaic box straight through when I first get it (especially the bigger ones). I tend to burn out and need a little variety, or at least a break. I like to work at it a bit more gradually, smaller bites you know. You guys that listen straight through have more stamina than I do! Rest up for those sessions w/Freddie and Clifford Jordan! They're worth your full attention! -

A brief story regarding Tom Harrell..... In 1996 they were organizing a concert at Carnegie Hall to honor what would have been Woody's 6oth anniversary (having taken over the band in 1936). When bari saxist and band manager Mike Brignola told me that Tom Harrell would be one of the guest soloists I asked him what Tom was going to play on. Mike said "Not sure- we'll probably plug him into one of our tunes". I saw a golden opportunity and volunteered to arrange one of Tom' tunes for the band- I picked "Sail Away" because besides being a great MF tune it seemed right for the sound of Woody's band. I transribed Harrell's solo off of his recording and turned it into a sax soli (with Flugel lead, one of the trademark sounds of the band). I put that in another trumpet part- all Tom had to do was play the head and blow a chorus. Tom was very gracious about the chart and recognized his transcribed solo. It was a great experience meeting him (although he was pretty quiet ) and I'm glad I was able to tell him how much I loved his music. ....and of course playing in Carnegie Hall was pretty cool too.....
