  1. Anyone? I just checked the booklet and there seems to be no remastering credit listed. Original session engineers are mentioned, but that's all. I think that's why he asked. Who wrote the liner notes? Also uncredited. Think it was MC? Does Tom Evered write liner notes?

  3. Hope you have a very Happy Birthday B!

And that's a PARTIAL list!! ROY MF HAYNES!! Happy Birthday, and THANK YOU!
  5. Wow, seems to be a lot of animosity among these Nightly Live Chat reg'lars! Glad I don't hang there much..........
  6. What, do you want to live forever? I hope that Woody Shaw At The Maintenance Shop DVD comes out soon.
  7. Well, I at least know the trumpet player is Ziggy Ellman. I'll stop there and let some others guess. I only know 2-3 of the others though.
  8. Is the Stefon Harris worth picking up?
  9. A quick scan of the thread revealed no mention of Victor Feldman. Where does he fall (as a "vibist") among these players?
  10. In the studio for the famous "Kind Of High" session. Tunes include: Blowin' Green All Booze Freddie Freebaser
  11. Sounds like they got the shaft.
  12. A long time ago (when I was young and stupid) I would hear an artist who was no longer at the peak of his/her powers and think "this person should just retire and not embarrass themself anymore". I now realize that playing is what keeps one alive in mind and body. An artist who "retires" usually does so only because they are physically or mentally incapable of playing anymore, and often they pass away not long after. Giving up what you love to do the most would have to be hard and more than a little discouraging to say the least. That's why I can enjoy a performance by an artist who may no longer be at the "peak of their powers", and frequently you get to hear the old lions roar one more time. Some of these players at 75% of their previous potential still sound better than some of the "young bucks" who may be at full strength chop-wise, but haven't lived enough to have a whole lot to say.
  13. The movie was a big disappointment. I even thought the music (which was the best part) came off as self-conscious and contrived. I'm usually an Altman fan, too. I just didn't get this one. Jennifer Jason Leigh, who I've liked in other films, was awful in this one with that cartoon-like accent, a generic Betty Boop-type of thing. There was another movie where she had a similar accent, The Hudsucker Proxy, and IMHO it worked better there because of the surrealistic atmosphere of the film. I would like to see this KC '34 release, though. Hopefully it will come out on DVD.
  14. I wouldn't refer to Booby as "avant garde". He's considered to be part of the hard bop style, like most of the Blue Note guys.
  15. Mrs. FFA is also a trombonist! She dallies in the classical genre fortunately. She is the trombone prof at the U. of Missouri at KC Conservatory. Thank god she plays in a different genre than me- the last last thing I want is to get a call like: "Hey Paul, we need a trombone for this upcoming gig, is YOUR WIFE available??" Every girlfriend I ever had eventually got bugged because I spent too much time practicing and playing gigs. Now I'm married to someone who practices trombone more than I do! Be careful what you wish for guys! And finally, we're convinced that our dog thinks all humans play trombone. He sings along when she practices her loud orchestral excerpts. He falls asleep when I practice jazz. Thanks, please trip your waitresses.
  16. Thank you, I'm honored. BTW SS, are you aware of that Curtis side called "Boss of the Soul Stream Trombone"? Have I asked you about that before?
  17. Happy birthday, Joe! Please check in when you get the chance!
  18. OK, I was asking for that!
  19. BTW, I was also relieved to be the subject of the thread titled "Happy Birthday..." and not "What an asshole..."!
  20. Thanks for the kind words everyone! Mrs. FFA is off at a gig until tomorrow, so it was a quiet day (nothing at all wrong with that). We'll probably go out tomorrow or Sunday. Took the dog to the park, got a haircut and am going to make some homemade pizza for dinner. I appreciate this place and am grateful to be a part of this group. I like that "what unites us is greater than what divides us". Good to be among so many music lovers. Glenn, let's fire up that sucker and whip up some 'cue for eveyone!
  21. I believe the carnival had already begun and Sonny's wish was that it didn't conclude.
  22. I'm thoroughly enjoying the Oliver Nelson box. Some great writing and playing. My only complaint thus far is I wish the piano had been tuned for the "Fantabulous" session. It's kind of a drag. Otherwise, great stuff. Anyone else checking it out?
  23. Where oh where is Dan Gould?
