What's happening in your area?

Bobby said Curtis Lundy was coming. Also, Terrell won't be coming as he has to attend his grandfather's funeral. Bummer. -

I hadn't heard this one before. It's really good! It's fascinating to hear the original version of New Rumba and realize what Gil borrowed for his arrangement for Miles. This one is a real treat!!

Picked this up today along with the Evans and Jamal. The Smith didn't have a booklet, the others did. Did anyone get a booklet w/the Smith?

Thelonious Monk Int'l. Jazz Vocal Competition

A little off-topic, but I saw Clark a couple weeks ago here in KC, and although he looked quite frail he sounded pretty good. I'm not sure how much longer we're going to be blessed with Clark's presence, hopefully a long time, but if you want to see him, do it as soon as you get the chance. I first started hearing Clark live in the 70s, and although it's difficult to hear him with any amount of diminishing of his considerable skills, I've come to realize that when our heroes get old, very often the main thing that keeps them going is the opportunity to PLAY. I see this in Clark, and can certainly forgive any frailties. My feelings tend more towards supportive thoughts of "You GO, Clark. Git on it! Bark like a big dog!" I've had this feeling when hearing other heroes late in their careers (like Dizzy, Dexter, Carl Fontana to name but a few). Most of these cats still sound better at 60-70% than others at 100%. -
Good weekend coming up in KC. Friday night Bobby Watson and Horizon (Ed Simon, Curtis Lundy, Victor Lewis and Terrell Stafford). Saturday night Roy Haynes- not sure yet who's coming with him. No matter-when it's Haynes it roars! Any of the KC guys planning on attending these events?

There were a lot of cicadas around this summer- I think it was the 7 year cycle. I noticed how loud they can get while I was sitting out on the deck- sometimes you have to raise your voice to be heard over their cicadous cacaphony. They're noisy but seem to be harmless. Is this mostly a midwest thing, or do other regions get these infestations?

Thanks for sharing that, chuckyd4. Really eloquent and poignant post. I'm sorry you're having problems, although I sure can understand why (as much as someone who wasn't actually there can) and I hope things soon get better for you. I hope you've got someone to talk to, either friend or professional, I would think it would helpful to talk about it. I remember going out with friends for drinks shortly afterwards (just to get out of the house)and starting to laugh about some stupid thing, and it kept escalating but kind of crossed the line almost to crying, you know, kind of an emotional "purge". Man, I felt better after that. I think the worst thing would be to keep it bottled up. But I'm no professional, so.... I do know this- always know you're among friends here!

I usually get horrible tunes stuck in my head after going any place that has piped-in muzak, especially baby boomer nostalgia-type 70s/80s swill (grocery store, mall, etc.). The most recent torture was a 24-hour-flu bout with "Afternoon Delight". Just shoot me please!

I expect this thread has for the most part much run its course, so thanks to those who shared some very personal and emotional stories. I hope it wasn't overly maudlin to talk about this; my feeling is that the passage of time tends to temper the pain somewhat, and we can look back and see what we were going through with a bit more of an objective eye.

Another nice version of this one is on the Individualism of Gil Evans recording. Also on that one is another moment of supreme Waynosity - "The Barbara Song". Yes, it's Shorterlicious!

Hey, aren't you the "tightening noose of debt" guy?

We're trying to keep it "low key" here, folks. If you want to do otherwise, kindly take it here. Thank you.

Isn't that the show that was sponsored by Viagra?

The Thad/Mel was my first Mosaic. After hearing how much the sound was improved from the original reverb-drowned records I instantly became a Mosaic junkie!

That leather shot is AMAZING! -
Wow, I only watched it on TV and it f*cked me up. I can't even imagine what it must have been like to be there as some of you were. My heart goes out to y'all. I'd bet that in the midst of all the terror and confusion there were also many moments of serious bonding- relationships that were forged that day that probably still are strong. EDIT: Another thing- it's really haunting seeing movies with the Towers in the background or skyline shots, isn't it?

OK, I pulled out some Carpenters this summer. And dammit, I enjoyed it. So sue me. I think it was because I recently watched this really lame made-for-TV movie about the Carpenters. You know, it's late and you need to go to bed and then this lame thing starts and before you know it you've watched the whole damn thing. It sucked big time, but it made me want to revisit some of their music. I have to admit, a lot of the multitracked choral backgrounds sound good. Good voicings and nice production. And yes, a generous serving of cheese.

Everytime I turn on the news I expect to hear about some new catastrophe. Things that once seemed beyond our imagination now seem possible and even likely.

Saw a documentary on this today. Three years later, I still get that horrified feeling that I remember so distinctly from watching the whole tragedy unfold that morning. I must have watched CNN for a week or two straight before I had to force myself to get out of the house and do something else so the depression didn't become overwhelming. Everything seems so different now (I'm not necessarily talking about the resulting political ramifications, that's why I didn't post this there); each day seems more important, and the little daily BS that used to be bothersome is so insignificant. And of course politically it's even more important to do what you think is right. The time for apathy is over. What are your reflections?

Swordfishtrombones is a good one, IMHO.
