Same hat... another great album!

Trumpet player Ambrose Jackson died last month. Article from the Times-Herald Record. I met Ambrose Jackson when he was in Paris and playing with Marion Brown. A very nice man and musician who did not get the recognition he deserved. While in Paris he recorded with Marion Brown, Sunny Murray, Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, Alan Silva among others. Duke Ellington hired him for an European tour in the Fall of 1969. The article indicates he was a well respected man who inspired others in his community.

I have run out of space for vinyls! Have enough to keep me very happy until it will be time to go! I am not buying them any more except for the very rare one. Last time this happened was a couple of months ago when I came upon an original French Polydor 'Sammy Price avec Lucky Thompson'. Condition was better than acceptable and the price better than right! I buy CDs nowadays. No downloads!

Oliver Nelson 'Full Nelson' (Verve, mono)

Sonny Rollins played soprano in the '70s mostly. His first recorded appearance on the instrument was on the 'Next Album' session for Milestone in 1972. Interesting solo on 'Poinciana'! Other albums where he plays soprano include 'Horn Culture' and 'Easy Living'. There may be others... Personally, I'ld rather listen to him on the tenor!

God, I wish I had that in mono. The stereo version has horrible separation and out-of-whack levels. One of the reasons that made me choose mono over stereo versions when this was still a possibility! Now spinning... Sam Rivers 'The Quest' (Red Records, stereo) with Dave Holland and Barry Altschul

Bertrand, this double CD (on the Blue Note label by now!) has some of the best Criss ever The Complete Imperial Sessions. Accompanying players include Kenny Drew, Sonny Clark, Berney Kessel, Lawrence Marable among others.

The original LP was the way I first heard this incredible music. It's still the way I have the music in mind. The CD release of the original tapes was another revelation. Not really sure I would admit it is better but then I would hate to be asked which one I prefer I love both

Most of the tracks come from Duke Ellington Just Jazz Concerts broadcasts from the Empire Room in Hollywood, February 1949. That's the Ellington band with Ben Webster (and Wendell Marshall on bass). Singers were Ray Nance (Just Squeeze Me) , Kay Davis (Lover Man) and Al Hibbler (Solitude) The Billie Holiday tracks were from another Just Jazz broadcast from LA in June 1949. Backing Billie were Neal Hefti on trumpet, Herbie Harper on trombone, Herbie Steward, clarinet and tenor, Jimmie Rowles on piano, Iggy Shevack on bass and Blinkie Garner on drums!
