  1. From the New York Times: What Exalts Stradivarius? Not All Stradivariuses Were Created Equal
  2. The Masters of Jazz reissues label which has been dormant for the past few years is back in business. They are releasing a number of sets (all 3 CDs) at very reasonable prices. A preview of the various sets can be seen at Amazon.fr. Each set includes three previously released CD from the initial Masters of Jazz series. The new sets are being distributed by Discograph. No details yet on their website yet!
  3. Does anybody happen to know if this Atlantic date that you mention was ever reissued in the Atlantic JAZZLORE LP series of the 80s? I figure an original will be out of price and recent CD reissues (e.g. Fresh Sound) have idiotic pairings where you are bound to already have half of the contents 8i.e. one of the 2 LPs coupled together). And I prefer vinyl anyway if the alternatives exist ... That album was only reissued in vinyl form in Japan. My copy (with original cover) was part of the Warner-Pioneer Japan 'Jazz-Forever 2' series that came out in the early '80s.
  4. This month's LP list... - Duke Ellington at Fargo - And his Mother Called him Bill - The New Orleans Suite
  5. CP32 I have several of those. CP35 I don't. Any list available of those six BN CP35?
  6. Italy and Spain will have no problem qualifying... France does not deserve to be in this final round but ending up in group A means that it may qualify for the second round. Doubt that the team has any chance beyond that unless several of the good players among them manage to build a team spirit which has been lacking for much too long!
  7. Those Charlie Shavers Vogue picture discs were reissued on the Baldwin Street CD 'The Many Moods of Charlie Shavers'. Buddy de Franco played clarinet on those Shavers sides! They were also included on the Charlie Shavers 1944-45 from Classics!
  8. Grumble! Grumble! You sound like a Frenchman by now! Apologize for not having mentioned the non-EU Swiss
  9. Sonny Stitt 'Plays Jimmy Giuffre' (Verve, Japan)
  10. Up! Because all the music that was released on the five volumes 'Live at the Black Hawk' are being reissued on the American Jazz Classics ( from Spain!?!) label, a 4CD box. Something that Fantasy/Concord should have done years ago. Shelly Manne and his men recorded this in September 1959, 50 years ago. EU fans will be happy to get the box . Non-EU fans will feel guilty if they ever purchase it
  11. Just too bad there's no Jaspar (with Byrd) or Wilen (with Distel) on that bonus CD. Getting this anyway!
  12. Thanks for mentioning that bonus CD. Did not realize this came with the latest issue. Going to purchase this month's 'Jazz Magazine'. I have not read the magazine in quite a long time!
  13. Norman Granz had Jimmy Giuffre lead and arrange albums for several of Verve stars back in 1959. Among the albums Giuffre made at that time for the label are: - Anita O'Day Sings Jimmy Giuffre Arrangements - Herb Ellis Meets Jimmy Giuffre - Lee Konitz Meets Jimmy Giuffre - Lee Konitz You and Lee - Sonny Stitt Plays Jimmy Giuffre Arrangement Might make a good Mosaic Select!
  14. At least they got that one right... [On Green Dolphin Street Martial Solal, soloist Track from: Live At The Village Vanguard [CamJazz]]
  15. Previous thread, same subject...
  16. An old favorite... with Norris Turney, Budd Johnson, Norman Simmons, Milt Jackson, etc... A typically unpretentious Pablo session that had all the musicians in fine form!
  17. That French RCA JazzLine Shorty Rogers, vol. 2 'The Rarest Shorty Rogers' is the LP with two of the tracks recorded as by Boots Brown & his Blockbusters (Rogers, Bernhardt, Shank, Giuffre, Mulligan, etc...) that don't seem to have ben reissued since! I still keep that LP. Now spinning: Coleman Hawkins 'Back in Bean's Bag' (Columbia, stereo)
  18. Thought I had a good deal when I paid €26 for the 7CD box
  19. Several years ago, I came upon a couple of those DIW Sonny's Time Now in a secondhand record shop in Paris. They were being sold for a few €. When I went to the cashier, he mentioned that the CDs had been sold by Sonny Murray himself the day before. He most probably sold them for peanuts
  20. Might be a good idea to get the full set from France (where the box originated). Check Amazon.fr or other sellers...
  21. Don't think Pee Wee Russell has been named yet! He is one of those unique musicians that are a trip of their own. Try this one for a start, from the Commodore vaults... ... then on to 'Hello Lola' (with Coleman Hawkins) and proceed to more of his albums!
