  1. Wasn"t Green's solo on 'Honeysuckle Rose' absent from the early editions of the Carnegie Hall concert?
  2. Charles Mingus' arco playing may not be really correct by academic standards but it is his solos (on the UCLA concert, for instance) that really get to me. So does PC's arco (as on Red Garland's 'Groovy')!
  3. Michiko Kakutani reviews Teachout's book in the New York Times today.
  4. Classic Chu Berry Columbia and Victor Sessions, discs 1 and 2 Wonderful music!
  5. Ahmed Abdul-Malik 'East Meets West' (RCA, Living Stereo) with Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Johnny Griffin, Benny Golson, etc...
  6. This is part of the Cecil Taylor appearance on the French TV film 'Les Grandes Répétitions' produced by Luc Ferrari and filmed by Gérard Patris, when French TV was producing ambitious shows. The Youtube sequence comes from a bad video boot. The original video is part of the INA vaults and is way better! Now that INA is releasing scores of videos from the vaults, I hope they release the Cecil Taylor film as well as other invaluable films from 'Les Grandes Répétitions' series (those include films on Karlheinz Stockhausen, Edgard Varese, Hermann Scherchen and Olivier Messiaen). I was fortunate to be able to attend the making of the Cecil Taylor film which was shot inside a 17th Century building on the majestic Place des Vosges (formerly Place Royale) in the heart of Paris. A full three day experience. One of my best jazz memories!
  7. Yes, Newk and Hawk played at the 1963 Newport festival. With Paul Bley, Henry Grimes and Roy McCurdy. Rollins played three tunes (two with Hawk). One of them (All the Things You Are) was issued on Italian boots! Wolfgang's Vaults have not touched the Newport 1963 festival yet bu they're adding concerts from the 1958 Festival. Rollins appeared at the festival with a trio (Henry Grimes and Roy Haynes!). I am waiting for this concert to show up very soon
  8. For those who mssed the initial run of CDs from the Vogue Masters reissues, there is this recent 3CD reissue from Sony: track list from the FNAC page The price is right. The CDs include tracks by Sidney Bechet, Django Reinhardt, Don Byas, Lucky Thompson, René Thomas, Jimmy Raney, Bobby Jaspar, among others...
  9. Only this 1976 date so far! Sonny Rollins New Paltz concert!
  10. Vito Price and Company 'Swinging the Loop' (Argo, black label)
  11. Yes, Miles too. If I remember right, there was a photo of the gathering in an issue of Jazz & Pop that came out shortly after the record date! Must have that issue gathering dust somewhere...
  12. Ornette Coleman was among the guests who sang 'We Shall Overcome' on the 'Louis Armstrong and His Friends' album!
  13. Happy Birthday, young man
  14. Joe Jones Special (Vanguard) with Emmett Berry, Benny Green, Lucky Thompson, Nat Pierce, Freddie Greene, Walter Page and Count Basie as guest artist! That Jo Jones Special is just beautiful. Have the French Vanguard/FNAC reissue of it. A great series! Now spinning: Zoot Sims plays Johnny Mandel 'Quietly There' (Pablo)
  15. Listened to this a while ago and found it to be a nice funk session. I have the original BN Liberty vinyl that I purchased at the time (in the '70s) when tons of BN albums were to be grabbed at the secondhand shops!
  16. That was on Geller's 'Gypsy' album on Atco. Music based on songs from the musical. Geller was helped by the Jones brothers (Thad, Hank and Elvin) plus Scott LaFaro on the tracks with Barbara Long. An old favorite (the album) of mine. Don't think it's been reissued on CD!
  17. The Bud Powell series CDs on Mythic Sounds are nearly impossible to find by now!
  18. Is this box an lp sized box similar to the Chet Baker Barclay one that was released a couple of years ago? How is the previously unreleased music? It's a Mosaic Select size box. The previously unreleased music is plain magnificent! So is the sound (except for the final track 'Night and Day' which is added as a bonus and was taped during a soundcheck on opening night). A splendid testimony to both men's music.
  19. Stan Getz-Kenny Barron 'People Time' (Universal/EmArcy), disc 2
  20. The Horo website indicates the Atomic reissues are genuine... Horo Records
  21. Another musical chair hero...
  22. Klick on the 'Aide' sign at upper right. Then at bottom left, you will find a 'Help in English' indication which should take you to the right path!
  23. Got the box today. Each of the 7 CDs have a full set from the Getz/Barron duos recorded at the Montmartre on consecutive nights from May 3 to May 6, 1991. That makes about 50 to 60 minutes of music per CD (with two of them clocking at 70 minutes and over). Great music and great deal! The FNAC website has a full track listings: Stan Getz-Kenny Barron People Time
  24. I hope you'll cross La Roja's path So do I! That will mean the end of Les Bleus at the WC, no doubt!
