  1. From Jorgen Grunnet Jepsen Jazz Records 1942-1962 discography, published in 1964 in pre-internet days. The most important sources for this book have been all published discographical material. The editor has tried to collect all the available material from magazines, books and catalogues... ...Any addition and/or correction to this book will be most welcome. The same goes for material which will help future volumes. Anything willl be received with thanks, and even the smallest item is of interest. Without cooperation, it is impossible to make the job as perfect as one could wish. This was the spirit back then. I still try to help with the Lord (as I did with the Bruyninckx when I was using it).
  2. Bud Powell Trio - Lucky Thompson Trio 'Mémorial Oscar Pettiford' (Vogue)
  3. From BBC News today.
  4. Always liked Louie Bellson when he played wit the Ellington orchestra. He was also very effective on the 'Basie in Sweden' album on Roulette back in 1962 when he temporarily replaced Sonny Payne as the Basie band drummer.
  5. Jo Stafford 'Jo + Jazz' (Columbia, six-eye mono) with Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster, Harry Carney and others....
  6. The New York Times report on the death of Elaine Lorillard in their edition today:
  7. From the Providence Journal today.
  8. Fully agree with Claude. Much less incidents last night. In Paris, the only signs that something is going on is when you tune in on news reports on the radio or on TV. The rios have had absolutely no incidence on the regular RER rides to Roissy/CDG airport. Best way to go to the airport!
  9. Very sad news. He was one of the last survivors of the BeBop era! And a baritone saxophone master!
  10. Art Hodes Complete BN box, LPs 4 and 5
  11. Damn right! Let the two countries enjoy a Peace pipe!
  12. Yes, it's been one of the best week in years for me. Getting a flaw-free copy of that Fats Waller Vol. 3 set plus getting a Mosaic gift card after winning the 2007 Grey Cup contest Life is just fine!
  13. Of course! One of those outstanding albums she recorded for Owl (others are with Amina Claudine Myers and Ran Blake). I have been a fan of this wonderful woman since I met her in the late '60s after she arrived in Europe. She is thoroughly being missed as a person and as a singer!
  14. Vienna Jazz Workshop 'Gulda Plays Gulda Jazz' (Guilde du Jazz) with Friedrich Gulda, Dick Murphy, Fatty George, Hans Koller and others!
  15. Beautiful! Thanks Aloc for posting this!
  16. King Ubu beat me to those SagaJazz compilations. Couple more classics: The L.A. Four version of Maurice Ravel's 'Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte' The Teddy Charles album 'Russia Goes Jazz' (United Artists) where compositions by Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Kachaturian get a jazzy treatment by an All Stars group that include Howard McGhee, Eric Dolphy, Zoot Sims, Jimmy Giuffre, Pepper Adams and others.
  17. No problem with my set
  18. Ella and Gershwin. This one still remains the best: with accompaniment by the impeccable Ellis Larkins!
  19. Gerry Mulligan Sextet 'Mainstream' (EmArcy Japan), vol. 3
  20. Tom Lord acknowledges Yasuhiro Fujioka's discography of John Coltrane as one of his sources, not the Wild discography. David Wild's contributions are acknowledged at least twice in the John Coltrane listings: one for the November 1, 1961 Village Vanguard session and another for the October 14, 1965 (Kulu Se Mama) session. Larry, I am not basically disagreeing with your (and others) points on 'borrowing', or the extent of it. But I am glad that the discography is on the net now. It does seem to be the only one available so far. A snapshot of Lord contributors at work (courtesy of King Vidor):
  21. Other oldtime classics: Jimmie Lunceford 'Chopin Prelude No. 7' and 'Sonata by Beethoven' Eddie South and Stephane Grappelli's improvisation on Bach's Concerto en Ré Mineur.
  22. Two that come to mind immediately: the Gerry Mulligan Sextet version of Claude Debussy's 'La Plus Que Lente' the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band version of Edvard Grieg's 'Anitra's Dance'
  23. Art Hodes Complete BN box, LP 1 Love that set!
  24. Freddie Hubbard 'Breaking Point' (BN, mono, NY label)
  25. Welcome, Randy! The standard reference guide for jazz vinyls is this one http://www.krausebooks.com/product/264/records Far from perfect since prices for vinyls tend to fluctuate but the book will give you an idea of what's rare these days. Here is the Count Basie band lineup for that Savoy Ballroom appearance: Buck Clayton,Ed Lewis, Bobby Moore (tp) Eddie Durham (tb,g) George Hunt, Dan Minor (tb) Earl Warren (as, bassax) Lester Young, Herschel Evans (ts) Jack Washington (alto, bar) Count Basie (p) Freddie Green (g) Walter Page (b) Jo Jones (d) Jimmy Rushing, Billie Holiday (vcl)
