  1. The invaluable volume 'Duke Ellington - Day by Day and Film by Film' by Dr. Klaus Stratemann indicates that Don Byas was picked up in Paris immediately after Ellington's arrival there to replace Charlie Rouse as tenor soloist for the duration of the tour. That April to June 1950 European tour during which the Ellington band played numerous concerts is barely documented on records. That TCB CD looks like a very welcome addition!
  2. I happen to like the art on the Pablo vinyls. Stark black and white images by the excellent photographer Phil Stern!
  3. George Russell ' Vertical Form VI' (Soul Note) with the Swedish Radio Jazz Orchestra
  4. I miss good ol' Clint Eastwood! Wish he could make a comeback here
  5. Splendid second half from the French 15! This was a major upset! France deserved the victory. I feel pity for the All Blacks who did not fight hard enough!
  6. J.J. Johnson 'Pinnacles' (Milestone)
  7. Anybody heard this new release from TCB? The Ellington band playing in Zurich in 1950. Don Byas is listed as plaing in the sax section!
  8. Joyeux anniversaire
  9. As noted in my earlier post, Granz was an art connaisseur! Which is why he named Verve after the famous art review and Pablo because of Picasso! Granz' art collection was worth a fortune!
  10. This was done earlier today. Will report any reply
  11. Absolutely. Would not take that much space and would be very helpful to a lot of fans of the label!
  12. Got this just released 3CD set from the RLR label The set includes more than three hours of music recorded during the 1958 tour of the 'Jazz from Carnegie Hall' musicians. Jay and Kai were part of the tour but the featured musicians also include Lee Konitz, Zoot Sims, Phineas Newborn, Red Garland, Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke. The set adds a lot of excellent music to what had previously appeared on several bootlegs releases. Sound is not exactly perfect but is quite acceptable!
  13. Norman Granz started his own Clef label in 1953 after having released his own albums with the Mercury label. Granz knew his jazz, knew his art and knew his business. Along with the Clef records, Granz also used the Norgran and Downhome labels for different types of music. By 1956 he consolidated his various labels under the name of Verve (the name Verve came from a highly-sought French arts magazine). He later created the Pablo (guess for who!) label.
  14. That Don Joseph album is really outstanding! Wish there was more music available from the session! Also wish there were more sessions led by Don Joseph! Now spinning: J.J. Johnson 'Trombone and Voices' (Columbia, six-eye mono)
  15. The Doug Ramsey book is better than a good addition. No Desmond addict can afford not to have it! Reall a woderful opus!
