  1. The photo of Monk that illustrates the Duke University story was taken by Eugene W. Smith. This other W. Eugene Smith photo showing Monk and musicians (including Phil Woods) during a rehearsal of music for the famous February1959 Town Hall concert will also be part of the show.
  2. Another recommendation for those Hep CDs of the Raeburn band!

  16. A fine one!!! Mais oui!!! Now getting kicks from: Young Men From Memphis 'Down Home Reunion' (UA, King Japan, stereo)
  17. Ted Curson 'Cattin' Curson' (Marge) with Chris Woods and the Georges Arvanitas trio

  19. Tony Scott had studied at Juilliard and also with composer Stephan Wolpe so I'm inclined to think John Lewis had a good reason to use him. The Tony Scott official site mentions that Lewis and Shuller also lead, in November (1955), the concert series Jazz at Town Hall produced by Monte Kay and Pete Kameron in which the Modern Jazz Quartet, with J.J. Johnson (tb), Lucky Thompson(ts), Tony Scott (cl) was supplemented for a large part of the adventurous program by a woodwind chamber orchestra. The program included classical and atonal music by J. Johnson, G. Schuller, J. Lewis, and Luigi Nono. John Lewis must have been satisfied with Tony Scott's contribution to hire him a few months after the recording session!
  20. That Jimmy Lyons album never made it to a regular CD release.
  21. Don Ewell Quartet 'Man Here Plays Fine Piano!' (Good Time Jazz, stereo, red label) indeed with fine help from Darnell Howard, Pops Foster and Minor Hall and superb sound from Roy DuNann (one of his very best recording!).
  22. Wonder where he kept his Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw records
  23. But he obviously was needed for the session since he appeared under his real name Anthony Sciacca. Tony Scott was under contract with RCA Victor at the time. John Lewis would probably have not bothered with the legal problems involved if he did not want him.
  24. Does his participation in the Giants of Jazz albums (and tours) from 1971 and 1972 qualify?
