  1. I've yet to check out that early 60s Parker. Bird was always ahead of his time!
  2. No followup yet to Sempé's 'Les Musiciens'. Would love to see that too. I see Sempé from time to time when he cycles around my neighborhood. I may try to stop him next time I see him and ask
  3. Niko, many thanks for providing that link to the Ortega interview. I have started exploring its content and it looks mighty interesting. In the Ortega section there is a mention of a recording session for Pacific Jazz with Dupree Bolton that seems to have gone nowhere in spite of the fact that the musicians involved were pretty satisfied with the proceedings. Wish there is a surviving tape somewhere and that it will surface.
  4. Lou Donaldson 'Good Gracious' (BN, stereo, Toshiba/Japan)
  5. Is that the solo Hill? It was next on my Select want lists! Already have the first Hill Select. Looking at the catalogue right now and the answer is no. The first set is marked down. OK in that case, I'll pay the full prize! Is there a list of the single CDs on the special list?
  6. It was French RCA which first published the full 1947 Town Hall concert back in vinyl days. The complete concert is available these days thanks to the good people at FreshSound:
  7. Is that the solo Hill? It was next on my Select want lists! Already have the first Hill Select.
  8. Warne Marsh (Atlantic Japan, stereo) with Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, Paul Motian, Ronnie Ball
  9. Brief news item found in the last edition of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Art Davis, the renowned double bassist who played with John Coltrane and other jazz greats, has died. He was 73. Davis, whom jazz critic Nat Hentoff once described as "beyond category," died Sunday from a heart attack at his home in Long Beach, Calif., said his son, Kimaili Davis.
  10. With the current rate of the US dollar against the euro, this might be some sort of a giveaway and time to purchase some discs that I did not jump on when they were released Waiting to see which albums are on that list
  11. Have been on an Ortega kick for years. Great fan of his distinctive music and sound. A positive fact about Ortega was that he was pretty often in France and played in clubs here a number of times. Beside 'On Evidence', Ortega recorded several albums in France, including 'Neuf' a track from the CD was included in my blindfold test a couple of years ago. The Hat Arts are among my favorites records (still have the original vinyl of 'New Dance' on Revelation!).
  12. Horace Silver 'The Jody Grind' (BN stereo, Liberty label)
  13. Big John Greer is one of the tenors featured with Wynonie Harris on a number of Wynonie sessions. There is a 4CD Wynonie Harris Proper box that gathers many of the sessions. Superb box from a quite unique singer! The tenors taking part in the sessions include Eddie Davis, Teddy Edwards, Illinois Jacques, Jack McVea, Arnett Cobb, Allen Eager, Johnny Griffin, Hal Singer, John Hardee ... Big John Greer is heard in one of his best solos on 'Mr. Blues Is Coming to Town'. Strangely his classic solo on 'Bloodshot Eyes' is not in that box (I have it on a Harris compilation LP). I'll be looking for that Big John Greer reissue CD! Thanks for pointing it out
  14. Happy Birthday, Lon Sharing a birthdate with Louis is a privilege: It could not happen to a better man... Hoping that the year will bring better news for your wife! My thoughts are with you.
  15. Billy Harper 'Soran-Bushi, B.H.' (Denon) wit Everett Hollins, Harold Mabern, etc...
  16. Max Roach 'It's Time' (Impulse, mono, orange label)
  17. I just don't understand the fuss about him. When one mentioned the word jazz around these parts not very long ago, people would reply Marsalis, Jarrett and Petrucciani. Michel was THAT popular! I can't ever remember being really impressed by these musicians. About Petrucciani, I'll say that I was more impressed with how he was coping with his physical limits than by the musical values of his playing and the physical limitations were awesome!. I heard him live on a couple of occasions and via his albums that kept being played on the radio jazz programs. His music left me a sense of unease. I heard too often the struggles that he had to go through to perform and the music that came out left me unmoved. Give me Martial Solal any time!
  18. Some day I hope to be able to sit down and take a thorough read of the book that Peter Pullman has written about the life of Bud Powell
  19. Story from BBC News today;
  20. The Mosaic boxes get played pretty often but the one that keeps showing up is the Herbie Nichols set. One that I have loved since day one!
  21. The Complete Verve Billie Holiday box, disc 4
  22. I have both LPs. Purchased the CD. More money wasted Maybe I'll learn some day!
