  1. $1,480 did not meet the reserve on this Paul Gonsalves Boom Jackie Boom Chick A very expensive original these days
  2. J.J. Johnson 'Proof Positive' (Impulse, stereo)
  3. The Royal Jazz catalog has gone OOP a long time ago! It was launched by French jazz afficionados. The Lenox School CD was one of their most interesting releases. Very hard to find nowadays!
  4. The Complete Billie Holiday Verve box, disc 3
  5. Apple juice A delicious change from the regular morning tea!
  6. No real substitute for Jazzmatazz so far None of the other ones are as complete and informative as the original one!
  7. Yusef Lateef 'Jazz Moods' (Ducretet-Thompson, French issue of Savoy LP) my very first Lateef!
  8. I have recommended that one before. Looks like it's still available... Piano Playhouse Also recommended is the Jimmy Rowles trio date 'Our Delight'. Plenty other excellent VSOPs...
  9. Not true! Jazz Factory has released Gerald Wilson 'Big Band Modern' It included a previously unissued live date and a 1954 album that had not been reissued on CD before.
  10. Current catalog from V.S.O.P. http://home.earthlink.net/~magnebit/
  11. The good side of Charlie Shavers is evidenced in the splendid reissue from Jazz Factory 'Gene Krupa Complete Sextet Studio Sessions' that reunites three of those Krupa dates. Shavers is on all three. There is also superb playing by Ben Webster on one of those sessions. Plus Willie Smith and Eddie Davis on the others. And Teddy Wilson on pîano throughout! If Verve had done its job properly, this CD would have been reissued under their banner!
  12. Not so sure about this As a matter of fact, I would not be surprised to see the Gene Shaw sessions appearing on one of the Andorrean label pretty soon.
  13. Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers Avec Barney Wilen 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960' (Fontana)
  14. Because Shaw could not make it to a 1958 record session with Langston Hugues and Mingus. Shaw had the flu and could not go, he tried to phone Mingus but could not reach him. Mingus called Shaw and threatened him. He later apologized to Shaw. Shaw refused to rejoin the Mingus band. This is described in the Gene Santoro book on Mingus 'Myself When I Am Real'.

    Henry Red Allen

Is this the same live 1965 date released on CD on Storyville? The Storyville (originally on Merritt) comes from gigs recorded in June 1965. The Columbia album also has tracks from June 1965 and also August 1965. All from those Roslyn, R.I., club dates.
  16. What a life... What a book, his 'Slaughterhouse Five'...
  17. Charlie Shavers blasting it out! Video from Art Ford's 'Jazz Party' filmed in September 1958. With Shavers and Coleman Hawkins are JC Higginbotham (not Wilbur de Paris as the film title states), Pee Wee Russell, Willie The Lion Smith, Dicky Thompson on guitar, Vinnie Burke on bass, Sonny Greer on drums and Harry Shepard at the vibes. Avalon
  18. Not on the same day, two days apart. Armstrong died on July 6, 1971. Shavers on July 8
  19. something more than speculation (but less than confirmed fact) from another thread... The Andorran labels won't bother that much with these subtilities
  20. Enjoying the first volume of 'Chroniques de la Montagne' by Alexandre Vialatte an excellent French writer who probably is unknown in non-French reading countries. Vialatte wrote almost daily chronicles for the central France newspaper 'La Montagne'. Love his style and his humor. An author for the 'happy few'! Vialatte also is known for translating Franz Kafka into French from 1933 on.

Guess I'll stick to the JSP. I'm happy with their sound!
  22. Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane (New Jazz, mono)
  23. It's actually the album that turned me on to the talent of Shavers. It's a very straightforward trumpet and strings album with Shavers not straying away from the melodies. No trace of any aggressiveness here! Gorgeous arrangements by Sy Oliver. Doubt that this would be to everyone's liking! But I'm a fan of it!
  24. Still exciting - even if somehow subdued - at his final session on Black and Blue. One to get! With Budd Johnson!
