  1. Shirley Scott 'Plays Horace Silver' (Prestige, stereo, black label) with Henry Grimes and Otis Finch
  2. Don't think I have any Onzy Matthews so far... This one looks interesting!
  3. Recommended pre-Verve Stuff: with Jimmy Jones on piano and John Levy on bass
  4. More John Coltrane... 'Crescent' (Impulse, orange, mono)
  5. Except that I doubt that Jordi Pujol - or whoever was taking care of the audio - was not working from the original tapes. Sound on most of the Spanish RCA CDs I have heard does not compare with the audio of the original RCAs by a very long shot!
  6. Looks googinglygood, indeed
  7. Chicago smoking ban may cloud jazz lovers' loyalty Since the article mentions jazz fans from Paris, it should be added that there has been a smoking ban in most public places throughout France since February 1. Few complaints so far!
  8. What about Walt Dickenson?
  9. Visitors to Amsterdam, please take note From AFP:

    Don Cherry

In that Don Cherry discography, the date for the soundtrack to the Skolimovski film 'Le Départ' is wrong. I was at the session. It was recorded on April 10, 1967 in Paris. Beside Don Cherry and Gato Barbieri, the other musicians at the session were Luis Fuentes on trombone, Jacques Pelzer on alto, René Urtreger on piano, Jean-François Jenny-Clark on bass and Jacques Thollot on drums!
  11. More from the John Zorn/Milford Graves gig at Tonic...
  12. John Coltrane 'Live at the Village Vanguard Again! (Impulse, orange, stereo)
  13. That one had the VAN GELDER stamper on both sides of the wax!
  14. John Zorn with Milford Graves, Bill Laswell, etc... at Tonic
  15. Those dancers!!! Wow! Chick Webb 1929
  16. May the Red Menace continue to menace
  17. You will find details about the Pathe sessions here! Click on Sessions and go to 24-29. The Pathe sessions include the March 8, and December 5, 1928 dates plus the March 18, April 29 and September 10, 1929 dates. Awesome site that Duke Ellington Panorama!
  18. Just curious, Yves! Is the cover of the album a gatefold one like on the original?
  19. The new RVG batch has been on sale here for the past few days. I'm not getting any of those unless there is a marked improvement over the vinyls. I am getting tired of the recycling of the BN material
  20. Papa Jo's drumming was masterful. One of my favorite session with him is on the Lester Young album on Verve 'Pres and Teddy'. No showmanship there (nothing against it) but just the right support!

    Shorty Rogers

Shorty Rogers heads a West Coast group at the Aurex Jazz Festival in Japan in 1983. With him are Bud Shank, Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Cooper, Bill Perkins, Pete Jolly, Monty Budwig and Shelly Manne! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUEqNznwXNk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLIGzCvG0l8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2FPr-y4Px0
  22. The Johnny Mercer looks tempting. I don't have any of this material. Which is not the case of the Cohn/Newman/Green Select. I have enjoyed the vinyls for decades. People who have not heard the albums are in for a treat!
  23. Big Beat Steve, agree with you about that 'New Orleans sur Seine' but as far as I know it is still the most readable of the French jazz scene account. Since I was a witness to a number of the episodes described I took a somehow perverse interest in reading it. Can't think of a better book on the subject so far!
