  1. Those Impulse labels are commonly refered as 'orange'. To quote from Wikipedia: 'Impulse! releases are known for their distinctive design, dominated by black and orange on the sleeve spine and record label. Impulse!' I don't see red when I see these Impulse labels
  2. Archie Shepp 'The Magic of Ju-Ju' (Impulse, stereo, orange label)

  8. Another recommendation for the 'Mohawk' album on Fontana by the New York Art Quartet. It should be hard to find! Easier to find might be 35th Reunion CD by the NY Art Quartet. It's on DIW and also recommended! Also try to get the MPS album 'Afrodisacia'
  9. Lester Young Nat King Cole Charlie Christian Jimmie Blanton Sidney Catlett Let the proceedings begin but tell me first where that desert island is?

  13. If I remember well the first box I got was the 2-LP box 'An Evening With Ornette Coleman', a Made in Germany set from Polydor International of Ornette's 1965 concert in Croydon. Probably came out in the late '60s. Or it might have been the first Jazz Composer's Orchestra 2-LP box from JCOA records. That one came out in 1968.
  14. 'Blowin' The Blues' (World Pacific/Toshiba reissue) a WP anthology with tracks by the Harold Land All Stars, Wes Montgomery-Harold Land, Harry Edison-Teddy Edwards, the Mastersounds, etc...
  15. Same here. My favorite Getz band. It's none other than Duke Ellington who introduces the Getz unit at this Shrine concert!
  16. Happy Birthday, Tonym The year ends with plenty of celebrations for you
  17. Gary Bartz NTU Troop 'Home' (Milestone) with Woody Shaws, Albert Dailey, Bob Cunningham, Rashied Ali
  18. Blue Note had an exchange deal in the early fifties with Vogue France. Vogue issued a number of ten-inch LPs from the BN sessions on their Jazz Selection, Swing and Vogue labels. This enabled BN USA to issue material from Vogue, including the Clifford Brown in Paris, Gigi Gryce, Sidney Bechet and Claude Luter, James Moody, Mezz Mezzrow, Dizzy Gillespie, etc... sessions recorded for Vogue.
  19. Don't know if this has been up before. Available now. May not be there for long! John Coltrane at Temple University

  21. I saw an advance copy of the 'This is Gary McFarland!' documentary and was pretty impressed with the work involved. I was not aware of how he died. The film has interesting interviews on that sad ending!
  22. Et voila! Click on Ecouter for samples!
  23. This is a 3-LP box 'John Coltrane Quartet Live at the Half Note' which was released in 1984 on the Audiofidelity label. Ed Rhodes gave an excellent description of the content.
  24. French singer Juliette Greco who will turn 80 in a couple of months has a new album out on Polydor/Universal, 'Le Temps d'Une Chanson'. The album was recorded in New York this year. Gil Goldstein was the producer. Not a jazz album but it features several jazz musicians including Wallace Roney, Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker, etc...
  25. I'm so jealous. I have twelve of Pee Wee's albums, plus some he did with others on the JazzTone label, but not that one. Love Pee Wee Russell. The music of Pee Wee Russell always brings a smile on my face To keep in a similar mood, now spinning: Willie 'The Lion' Smith 'The Lion Roars' (Dot)
