  1. Don Patterson with Booker Ervin 'Hip Cake Walk' (Prestige, mono, blue label)
  2. chewy, that Complete Hawk on Keynote is a must have for any Bean fan! Check the list that is on the opening post and see all there is in that set. Those alternate takes are beautiful! Some of the most valuable alternates ever that add a lot to the understanding of Hawk's ways around the improvisations.
  3. From Reuters.
  4. Ben Webster 'Remember' (Mercury, Holland) a 1967 quartet date recorded in London with Dick Katz on piano
  5. 'The Secret Sessions' would be my choice. The Village Vanguard was second home to Bill Evans. Lots of superb music in that box!
  6. Art Pepper 'Intensity' (Contemporary, stereo)
  7. Happy Birthday, indeed!!!
  8. Art Farmer 'Portrait of Art Farmer' (Contemporary stereo) a '70s reissue with excellent sound
  9. Baker, thanks for pointing out to the liner notes to the VSOP CD reissue. I have the vinyl reissue of that and it reproduces the liner notes by Joe Quinn from the Mode release which do not mention the Roach proposal. The Candoli/Brownie replacement was also mentioned by Alun Morgan in his liner notes to the FreshSound CD 'Conte Candoli 'Cote-nuity' where Conte 'honors the memory of twelve trumpet legends'. He plays 'Stockholm Sweetnin'' as a tribute to Clifford Brown. And a very warm welcome to you, Baker. No need to stay on the sideline.
  10. Tom, the discs arrived in the mail today. Merci beaucoup
  11. Same experience here. Lost interest in the film after a few minutes and moved on. But that was before I heard about the Lucky Thompson club scene!
  12. Leaders of the Roman Catholic church in England and Wales are protesting the BBC over a program which accused Card. Ratzinger - the current Pope Benedict XVI - of covering up child abuse by priests. The program was aired Saturday night on BBC-1's 'Panorama'. From AFP:
  13. Gave that 'Midnigtht Walk' another try! This time thru headphones. Still no sound of an organ. The vinyl track's length is listed as 3m30!
  14. Gil Evans 'Into the Hot' (Impulse, mono) the Cecil Taylor and John Carisi sessions
  15. I talked recently with photo editor legend John G. Morris (he is one of the trustees of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund) and the subject of the Jazz Loft Project was mentioned. Morris said that the project was going well and the music documents would soon be made available. No details yet but I'll pass them on when I'll know more. Jazz Loft
  16. There is the Chuck Stewart calendar... ... but still no BN calendar in sight
  17. Not much I can say about it except that despite being a huge fan of Bechet, 'La Nuit est une Sorcière' is a Bechet achievment I fail to get excited about. The ballet was premiered at the Paris Palais de Chaillot theater in 1953 and was not a success. It was revived two years later and was better received. Not sure Roland Petit was the choregrapher but if it's true, no wonder it did not meet with the expected success.
  18. My ears are willing but I cannot hear organ on that track! I'm listening to the Atlantic vinyl stereo original Did Collectable use a different mix?
  19. Born on the same day! Happy Happy Birthday Birthday to both of you
  20. Can't hear an organ on that 'Midnight Walk' title track. It's piano to my ears!
  21. Ellington scored ballets for the 'Drum Is a Woman' TV special back in the late '50s. Duke also composed music for the 1970 ballet 'The River' with Alvin Ailey. Alvin Ailey did quite a number of jazz-based ballets. Check this! Then there was the New York City Ballet production of 'N.Y. Export: Opus Jazz' which was choreographed by Jerome Robbins. Opus Jazz
  22. You mean the original double LP release on the Charles Mingus label was not legitimate?
  23. Not sure how to take it that 'Exploration' went OOP. Would be interesting to hear it sold out but have to doubt this. In any case, 'Exploration' is a very interesting achievement by Moncur and the musicians involved!
  24. because the word Appell is used exactly that way in german language as well. I guess its a heritage from Napoleon and french occupation back than. There are some area's in the "Rheinland" that still uses geman pronounced french wordings. actually, it IS the German word as the french is spelled with only one L at the end. In Dutch it means apple, unless you put an accent-grave on the e, then it's roll call or appeal. an apfel a day keeps the doctor away
  25. The Teddy Edwards is one to get! Not familiar with the others, but intrigued by the Nat Pierce...
