Recordings of Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown
brownie replied to birdanddizzy's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Elektra Musician released in 1982 the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet (with Sonny Rollins) date from 1956 under the title 'Pure Genius, volume One'. The music included in the album came from private tapes owned by LaRue Brown-Watson. The vinyl sleeve had a note from Eletra Musician boss Bruce Lundvall describing this as 'the first volume of an exception trilogy of previously unissued Clifford Brown-Max Roach performances featuring Sonny Rollins, from the private collection of Mrs. Clifford Brown'. The other two never came out on Elektra Musician. Clifford Brown did jam with Charlie Parker. I am pretty sure there are tapes of the music! -
Can't remember what I did with the Records box... I still have the double LP with its original cover!

The Vinyl Frontier, the in place for civilized people! -
Earl Hines 'Paris Session' (Ducretet-Thompson) had not listened to that one in years. Another awesome Hines solo date!
-
Chuck has listed most of the essential Earl Hines solo dates. I would like to add the Audiophile series (not sure the vinyls have been reissued on CD) that included solo explorations of works by W.C. Handy, Louis Armstrong and Hoagy Carmichael. I am currently on a Hoagy Carmichael kick and that Hines Audiophile vinyl (Hines Does Hoagy) is a favorite on my current playlist! A superb album that has few matches. Yes, Fatha knew best! At some time there were new albums from Hines appearing every week (or two weeks at the most) and at some point I was about to give up. Glad I did not, most of those albums are now unavailable and it's a damn shame. One more Hines I have to recommend is the M&K RealTime 'Earl 'Fatha' Hines Plays Hits He Missed', one of those direct-to-disc album, with Red Callender and Bill Douglas! And there are also the Black and Blue albums (the Hines/Budd Johnson 'Dirty Old Men' session remains exhilarating), and there are so many more...

The discs for EU (plus Switzerland!) participants are being mailed today. Thanks to ejp626 for lending a hand in relaying the discs to Tooter and fent99. Most of the mails should be in hand by the end of next week!

You'll have to be patient for this! Might take time! If you're impatient, you can have a look at the latest issue of WaxPoetics which includes a little presentation of some of the photos!

The Complete Capitol Duke Ellington, LPs 1 and 2! -
I plead Not Guilty! I was there as a plain Montgomery (and Griffin!) fan. I had not started taking photos at concerts yet. I started at the top in June 1965 when Louis Armstrong and his All Stars gave a concert at the Paris Palais des Sports and remained at the top the following month when the John Coltrane quartet played that Salle Pleyel concert!
-
Ron, I'll have to disagree. The Paris concert was very good. I was one of the lucky people in the audience but the Tsubo evening still remains beyond words. One of the five or six concerts I would have given anything to be in attendance! 'Full House' is one of the live date that continues to rock every time I listen to it!

It looks good and sounds very good. Rivers challenged Don Pullen much more than Pullen's usual tenor associates at the time (George Adams and Chico Freeman in particular). A thoroughly 'out' session which reaches just shade of the Rivers-Cecil Taylor duets. This was one of the very first releases from Black Saint!

I skip the threads dealing with US sports and the ones about pop groups of the past (Pink Floyd, Cream, Grateful Dead, etc...)! -
France lost to Slovakia 1-2 on homeground in an uninspired performance Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, top scorers when they play for Arsenal and Juventus Turin failed once more to deliver the goods under the national jersey. Coach Raymond Domenech continued to maintain his what-me-worry attitude after the game and complained after French supporters booed goalkeeper Fabien Barthez he keeps maintaining in the goalmouth!

All discs to non-EU people who enlisted for BFT 34 have been airmailed today. The discs for EU people will be mailed at the end of the week. Hope that all envelopes will be in sometime next week (although I am afraid the airmails to Brazil and Russia might take longer). All have been mailed in individual envelopes except for the one going to John B. That one has discs for Hardbop Jazz and randyhersom. Thanks again to John B. who offered help in forwarding discs. Please let me know when the envelopes hit your homes!
