You wouldn't like it! It's mostly mainstream I'll have a copy for you anyway

Oliver, first of all a hearty welcome! You keep refering to those June Christy releases as being part of the BN catalogue. I know that BN and Capitol are under the same flag nowadays but June Christy when she was alive was one of the stars of the Capitol label and that label had nothing to do with BN then. Are these TOCJs being released as BN records or as Capitol ones? That would be odd... And sorry I can't help with your question. As a longtime June Christy fan, I have her records on Capitol vinyls!

Please direct your thanks to Chas! Absolutely! Many thanks to Chas for resurecting the interview. This is a major one

A mightily interesting (and rare) interview! Walt Dickerson seemed to have his head very together. Just as his music! Congratulations Dmitry for getting this. And many thanks to couw for digging it out!

Don Cherry 'Complete Communion' (BN, Stereo)

From AFP: Bird flu has hit the French farming poultry industry bad and there has been a sharp drop (some 30 per cent) in domestic consumption despite the fact that it was safe to eat poultry as cooking kills the virus! Enjoyed chicken at lunch last weekend! Planning to have more later this week!

More food for Jazz In Paris completists... Jazz In Paris Remixed This one is a DVD! A 51-minute visual tour (in black and white) of Paris. Eery images by Antoine Carlier. With people like Nicolas Repac, Yvinek, Art Konik and others having a go at a re-cretation of the music from Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Art Simmons, Louis Armstrong, Serge Gainsbourg, Art Blakey, Barney Wilen, etc... Not my cup of tea but this one kept the interest on even if I felt another blow from the generation gap!

The first batch of BFT34 I had prepared has run out. A bit overwhelmed by the number of reauests I have for this BFT. Preparing a fresh batch for the latecomers! Planning to ship the discs to US members tomorrow. The non-US will follow before the week is over!

Oliver Nelson 'Taking Care of Business' (New Jazz)
-
I have had the original vinyl for years. This was not really my favorite Oliver Nelson at the time but I have grown to like the album. Not enough Lem Winchester dates available!

Dawn is breakin' in over here... So Happy Birthday, young man

Marcus, didn't see your PM. I am getting others. But you're in...

The George Wallington and his Band album on BN was a septet date (Dave Burns, Jimmy Cleveland, Frank Foster, Danny Bank, Wallington, Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke, arrangements by Quincy Jones). A really excellent session. I have a Japanese BN CD from 1990 which includes four additional alternate takes to the Wallington/Mobley LP. That was Wallington's only session on BN with the exception of a Gil Melle sextet date!

'At The Renaissance' was prepared for release in 1972 but saw the light of the day on Contemporary vinyl in 1985. Location engineering by Howard Holzer. Superb sound as usual from Contemporary Records!
-
Nate, I did not get your PM. You have only one foot in yet. Need your adress!
-
Superb double CD from Paris Jazz Corner. The concert was given to celebrate Sardaby's and Jazz Hot's 70th birthday, plus the 14th anniversary of the Paris Jazz Corner record shop! The music is another occasion to celebrate. A really good live date!
-
Quincy Jones 'Go West, Man' (ABC-Paramount) Three dates with different personnel. One date has Benny Carter, Art Pepper, Herb Geller and Charlie Mariano on saxophones!
-
That MetroJazz United Notions is a very enjoyable session. A shame that Verve just sits on the MetroJazz catalogue. There are some excellent albums there! Only the Sonny Rollins and the Big Brass (also with René Thomas!) seems to have been resurrected!

Have a great one

I think you are mixing several things here. The blown inheritance you are refering to is probably the one that Wilen's companion Caroline was hit with (before the African trip) by her very wealthy parents on non-Wilen related basis. That African trip was a low key affair, very much in the mood prevalent in the late '60s. He was not broke towards the end of his life. He certainly was not very rich but was very much recognised for his talent not only in Europe but also in Japan where he played concerts during several visits. Yes he had a brillant life. And played so much beautiful music!
-
Where did you get that impression? Wilen came from a well-to-do family but I don't think it can be said that he squandered his inheritance. He was earning his own money when he became one of the most visible musician on the French and European jazz scene while still a teenager!
-
You would have gotten it without asking
-
Fer, correct! I check the Tomajazz site from time to time to see what is going to be published on the other side of the Pyreneans. Wish my spanish was better so that I could read more of this interesting website! Or maybe I should start to learn some Andorran
