  1. Interesting (and rather alarming) article on the disappearing Cincinnati jazz scene. From the Cincinnati Enquirer today: http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art...02260313/-1/rss
  2. 'Definitive'ly. Of all France's neighboring countries, Andorra and Switzerland are the only two countries - both non-EU - that still have custom officers checking all incoming and outgoing visitors. And the Andorran custon officers are very strict on what you carry... unless you have those Andorran released records along

    BFT 34

Discussion on the current BFT has started. Obviously it's time for BFT 34! My turn. Anybody wanting to take part in this, please send me a PM with name and adress. Discs will be shipped first to non-EU members, then EU. One disc, 16 tracks, 77 minutes. Should be interesting and enjoyable listening. The Sign-up queue: - Stereojack - Stefan Wood - JSngry - Catesta - Eric - Steven - mikeweil - MartyJazz - EKE BBB - Late - Bright Moments - Red - Dutchman X - King Ubu - Clunky - John B - Peter Johnson - Tooter -- Hardbopjazz - randyhersom - marcoliv - ejp626 - fent99 - Nate Dorward - Durium
  4. The Definitive release to be out soon seems to include additional material (from other dates)... CHARLIE PARKER - DIZZY GILLESPIE Town Hall Concert, New York City, June 22, 1945 75 minutos. Incluye 10 temas extras grabados en la radio y en directo. Tras la magnífica edición en Uptown, aparecen nuevas cintas para este concierto... At least, they acknowledge the source of their Town Hall concert theft
  5. Yes, it just came out here along with other Warner goodies: Coffrets Prestiges Warner You know we take cinema seriously here!
  6. Can't imagine a Cary Grant best of box that does not include 'Bringing Up Baby'. A near-perfect Hawks film with a fully perfect Cary Grant-Katharine Hepburn chemistry!

  8. Toshiko Akiyoshi 'The Toshiko Trio' (Storyville) with Paul Chambers and Ed Thigpen OK but it lacks bite! There is a brief handwritten note by the previous owner on the back cover that he caught PC at the SF Blackhawk in February 1957. Presumably with the Miles Davis quintet... Lucky Man
  9. Relistened to that album and agree with this decription although it's not a bad one. Neither Woody Shaw, not Harold Land get enough solo space.
  10. The bootleg Ingo vinyl (from Italy) was from an incomplete tape of the Love Supreme radio broadcast. The vinyl edition that Jazzhound is refering to has to be the French Esoldun release from the INA (Institut National de l'Audiovisuel) which owns the original radio tape but was sued when INA released it on vinyl and CD on the Esoldun label. When INA lost the case, the label died.
  11. Sahib Shihab 'And All Those Cats' (Rearward, double LP) 'Those Cats' are from the Clarke-Boland Big Band

    Already old news: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...topic=25366&hl=
  15. Philips was a Dutch company at the time. This was the cover for the Dutch release. The Philips France was a subsidary company which released its own record covers! I never saw that original cover - taken on the Boulevard Saint-Germain, my neighborhood - until I saw the original US vinyl years after the French Philips was released back in 1959!
  16. From what I remember, 'Legrand Jazz' was originally released in the States with that image of Michel Legrand in Paris (photo by Sabine Weiss). The French Philips issue did not carry this cover! I think the French release had the photo of Legrand and a cigarette that is on the cover of the Universal France 2003 reissue.
  17. The cover is marvellous! The album is not bad but I found it pretty frustrating. A combination of talents that did not jell! But Pee Wee could really play up to the end of his career! Tracks are too short, many under three minutes. The final track, a version of Nelson's 'Six and Four' is a highlight of the album.

    Barney Wilen

'Movie Themes' is really excellent. Wilen loved those type of tunes. There was also a great empathy with Mal Waldron. I have this AlfaJazz in its Timeless version under the title 'Movie Themes Fom France'. Very highly recommended!
  19. Ray Draper 'A Tuba Jazz' (Jubilee, 'superlaphonic hifi) great session with John Coltrane, John Maher, Spanky DeBrest and Larry Ritchie
  20. Have had no problems with the labels of the several Transition LPs I owned (down to two these days ). I had problems with a couple of Debut originals with unglued labels!
  21. Mal Waldron - Jackie McLean 'Like Old Times' (JVC)
  22. I have those Melis on vinyl. 'New Village' seems to be available on CD: http://www.omnitone.com/store/120012.htm
  23. They went legit a long time ago. Probably at the time Pujol started recording fresh material when he traveled to the West Coast and produced those recordings by Bill Perkins, Lennie Niehaus, Dave Pell, Claude Williamson among others. Remember the Nocturne box that came out from Fresh Sound? That was from original tapes as many (if not most) FS reissues nowadays... No need to return to ashes
  24. 'Free To Dance' is a very structured work that also incorporates free blowing and vocalizing (by Jeanne Lee and Sheila Jordan). Don't shy away from it if you have a chance to get a copy! Even better is Melis previous release on Black Saint 'The New Village on the Left' which incorporates a vocal quartet from Sardinia!
