  1. Ubu, you're royally wrong about Fresh Sound. They have straightened their operation since their vinyl bootlegging days. What they reissue nowadays is legit. They even have the full support of many of the musicians they reissue rare albums from which is why you find additional stuff, rare photos loaned by the musicians on many of their releases and their liner notes. Fresh Sound is no joke. It is a very thorough and serious operation! I buy their stuff without any reservation. Their Dawn reissues were the first to have most of the alternate takes that were later included in some of the Mosaic sets. Of course I am not taling about the Definitive/Disconforme releases. These are a different matter and despite numerous inputs from very knowledgeable and worthy contributors here I have yet to figure out the degree of legitimacy of those reissues. As far as I can understand, the legitimacy degree is very near zero!
  2. Was not too keen on 'Hot' when I purchased it - I have problems with John Scofield - but I relistened to the disc some time ago and found the whole session quite remarkable! It's not a quartet date but would also recommend 'Notes' a duo date with Paul Motian! As for the Marcello Melis, the full title is 'Free To Dance'. Loved that one right away and it's still among my favorite Black Saints!
  3. Gene Ammons 'Preachin'' (Prestige, mono, yellow label)
  4. Not sure this can be of help but you can view the labels of the original vinyl here: Watkins At Large
  5. That's weird... the Japanese CD, TOCJ-5885, has a reproduction of the LP artwork and it says: Songs...Side A: RETURN TO PARADISE Tiomkin 12:52 PHINUPI Burrell 9:24 Side B: PHIL T. McNASTY'S BLUES Traditional 4:53 MORE OF THE SAME Jones 10:01 PANONICA Jones 3:49 For TRANSITION... Bob Guy/Engineer Tom Wilson/Cover Art, Photos A Live Concert Jazz Production by Tom Wilson Kevin, check this eBay item Watkins At Large The labels from the original LP confirm that the Japanese reissue LP I have had the right labels!
  6. It's a new day here and it's official now... it's Jim R. birthday! Hope you're having a great one
  7. Mike Henessey goes into the subject rather honestly and writes that 'Clarke was not completely innocent of radial prejudices himself' and made several deprecating remarks towards jews, whites, arabs, etc... also. Went with the character which could be pretty abrasive sometimes. But - will all due respect to Dick Katz - would not call him 'crazy'. There were other examples in the jazz world including LeRoi Jones (who abandoned his jewish wife and their two daughters) or John Lewis (who had an infatuation with one of Benny Goodman's daughter and was turned down by BG).
  8. A very French name by way of ... would be way too long to list all the countries involved in the ancestry! Thought the photo turned out pretty nice. A Mosaic first for me -_- If the published image was just a bit sharper, you'ld be able to recognize Phil Woods, Zoot Sims and Danny Bank in the sax section.
  9. Mercer Ellington 'Stepping Into Swing Society' (Coral, mono)
  10. Have not finished the book yet but what I have read so far was very interesting. Better than I thought it would be. I was afraid that Mike Hennessey would write a one-dimensional biography (there have been too many of those) but he does a very fine job of exploring the various sides of Kenny Clarke. The story of Klook's departure from the Modern Jazz Quartet is very truthful. So were the accounts of his marriage/affairs with Carmen McRae and Annie Ross. This was also for me a voyage through the past and brought back memories of various evenings listening to this magnificient drummer at the Club Saint-Germain and the Blue Note (the Paris one!), among other places! A wonderful read so far!
  11. Not sure, Valerie Wilmer would approve of seeing her photos being posted without her authorization. She is pretty strict on copyrights! Great photo, indeed
  12. The Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band 'At Her Majesty's Pleasure...' (Black Lion)
  13. Bertrand, forgot to mention that the 'Crazy Rhythm' bonus track was initially issued in the Transition LP30 anthology 'Jazz In Transition' which included various unissued tracks from Transition sessions.
  14. Bertrand, Byrd's Eye View (original copy) side A: Doug's Blues El Sino side B: Everything Happens To Me Hank's Tune Hank's Other Tune Watkins At Large (Japan identical reissue) side A: Phil T.McNasty's Blues More of the Same Panonica side B: Return to Paradise Phinup
  15. I have that 10-incher. Confirm the tracks order. First four on side 1, others on side 2!
  16. Sun Ra 'Sound Sun Pleasure' (Saturn)
  17. HOLD OFF EVERYTHING BIRD FLU ALERT From AFP today:
  18. Larry, assume this is a slip of the mind and it should read 'Miles as pimp'. Right?
  19. Paul, congratulations and welcome to the retirees club! I have a one-year lead on you and informatively my wife has about given up on 'her' ideas of filling my free time... Now spinning! Nathan Davis 'London By Night' (DIW/Mole Japan) with Dusko Goykovich, Kenny Drew, Jimmy Woode, Al Levitt
  20. Houston Person Ake Persson Duke Pearson
  21. Looks like a nice evening was had by all! Great shots, Sheldon!
  22. A very Happy Birthday to you, Mike Keep beating those drums!
  23. Dodo Marmarosa
  24. Jackie Paris is the singer. Not my favorite one but he does a creditable job! The album is a treat for fans of Don Lamond who kicks hell! There's also a great version of 'Gus's Blues' where the full band plays a Bob Brookmeyer arrangement that duplicates notes for notes the Zoot Sims solo on his Argo quartet date.
  25. Phil Woods 'Musique du Bois' (Muse) with a backing from Jaki Byard, Richard Davis and Alan Dawson, Woods catches fire!
