July '05 Mosaic Running Low & Last Chance
brownie replied to Edward's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Anita O'Day is 86 by now. She still performs from time to time. She toured England and France last year and made several clubs appearances to the embarassement of some fans. Dammit if she wants to do this at her age (and looks like that's what she wants), let her! By the time I reach her age (if I do) I will be happy to make a tour of my neighborhood but that's probably as far as I will go! Caught her at the Tavern on the Green in NY's Central Park a few years ago and she still delivered! -
The phrase is lifted from the Count Basie Bio-Discography by Chris Sheridan. So, there! May 17, 1955 was the date these Basie-Williams classics were recorded!

Brandon, sorry I cannot recommend a hotel in Barcelona. It's been several years since I stayed there. This is a list of record shops in Spain: http://www.apoloybaco.com/ricontetetiendas.htm The Jazz Messengers shop on the Ramblas was very recommendable but I am not sure they still have that many interesting items. In any case, you can fill up on Fresh Sounds, Blue Moon, Lonehill, Jazz Factory CDs. They are manufactured in the area. As for the city, the Gaudi architecture is a must see. You won't be able to miss the Sagrada Family that Rooster Ties posted. Take some time to go and see Gaudi's Casa Mila 'La Pedrera'. Another mustsee. And there are several more beautiful buildings including more from Gaudi to go and have a look. Do take time to see the Fondacio Miro and also the Fondacio Antoni Tapies! And most of all - as has already been recommended - take several walks thru the Barri Gotic in the heart of the city. No eating place to recommend. You cannot be disappointed by the local bars and restaurants! Just note that the Spaniards start their lunch around 3PM and have dinner late (even very late) in the evening!

Can't you read I read Oscar Guillermo Barbieri. The other is Manuel Gavinovich who played violin in Oscar Aleman's group.

Great news except the Diz and Bird and the Monk and Trane are never previously issued items. The Coltrane at the Half Note material has been available before on several bootlegs. There is a 3LP box from Audiofidelity 'John Coltrane Quartet Live at the Half Note' which came out in 1984. It includes 'One Up, One Down' and seven other tracksd. Maybe the new release will have better sound!

Isn't this Clifford Brown the former Clint Eastwood who joined in a couple of years ago and quickly disppeared? That Eastwood claimed to be the one and only out looking for help on a Clifford Brown movie project

One more to add to the GJT discography: 'Re-Visited' The Great Jazz Trio at the Village Vanguard, volume 1 (Hank Jones, Eddie Gomez, Al Foster) EastWorld LP. Recorded at the VV October 10, 11 & 12, 1980.

Also most probably influenced by Olivier Messiaen's works based on bird songs, notably 'Catalogue d'Oiseaux' among other compositions. Messiaen taught at the famous Summer school in Darmstdat a number of years.

These are indeed compilations but they are very well done. Most of the tracks may be available in complete forms but they would be pretty hard to assemble. Of the new batch, I have only the Black California CD. In the tracks included in this compilation, there are new tracks to me, the following are among them: - Wilbert Baranco's 'Night and Day' (recorded for Black&White), - Buddy Collette's 'It's April' (recorded for Dolphin's of Hollywood), a 1948 session that I did not find in the Lord discography. Others tracks come from the Dial, Savoy, King, Clef, Decca, etc... catalogues.

I have not checked but I would say the album I bought the most often has been the Herbie Nichols Trio session. First copy was a BN LP vinyl, a BN/UA issue. Loved the music, wanted more. Had to wait until BN reissued the Nichols twofer with the other trio sessions. But the sound on that one was pretty bad. That twofer was discarded. Purchased the Japanese King LP reissue next. Soon later I managed to get hold of a vinyl of the original 12inch BN, with the Lexington adress! A favorite disc! Then the Mosaic vinyl box with all the new material, one of my very first Mosaic acquisitions. And when I had a CD changer installed in my car, got the BN 3CD set so that I could listen to Herbie Nichols while driving!

That Patty Waters CD release was intriguing. I need to get back to it. Should have thought about her when listening to those final tracks of Disc 1

The JJ Johnson set is one to get as soon as possible! Quite a number of outstanding sessions in that box. Same for the Anita O'Day! -

Up because Saga Jazz is releasing a series of at least five CDs on August 16 in their new budget 'Modern Series'. The new releases include: - Sarah Vaughan 'Shulie A Bop', - Chet Baker Quartet 'Easy To Love' - Miles Davis + 3 - West Coast Jazz 'Hermosa Beach 1951-1954' - Black California 'Central Avenue 1945-1950' The new releases do not appear yet on the label site: http://www.sagajazz.com/ Just a reminder that Saga Jazz is the label that was started by the people who produced the superb Masters of Jazz series until it folded. Their CDs are excellent compilations of previously released material recorded more than 50 years ago. The Black California CD (the only one I have yet) has 21 sides by Slim Gaillard, Lester Young, Baron Mingus, Roy Porter, Gerry Wiggins, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, Lucky Thompson, Sonny Criss, Buddy Collette, etc...

The original session may not have been so good (I like it -_- ) but it was a great album title. No wonder it's still being used years after...
