  2. Don't think there are any recordings of Tatum playing at the Onyx club. There is a celebrated album of Tatum private recordings that was issued on the Onyx label. The 'God Is In The House' album! Dean Benedetti brought his tape machine at the Onyx club in the summer of 1948 when the Charlie Parker quintet (with Miles Davis) played there in the Summer of 1948. The surviving music is in the Mosaic Parker Benedetti box. Some of the same music (in more truncated form) was issued previously on the JazzWorkshop label as 'Bird on 52nd St.'
  3. The good people at Chronological Classics released a special 6CD box of all the master takes of Louis Armstrong records from 1932 to 1940. Got this hot box and completed it with the Neatwork CDs which include all available alternate takes to complement the Classics releases! Not sure that 6CD box is still available. It was vol. 2. A similar vol. 1 had the master takes up to 1932!
  4. Denardo Coleman. From Billy Higgins/Ed Blackwell to Denardo
  5. Is it "Something for Kenny"? The one where he uses fingers and knuckles... ← That was on A Fifth For Frank from the Curtis Counce Contemporary album 'Landslide'. An amazing solo!
  6. Allright, allright, Lon! And I'll be waiting for your report on this Ray Nance opus! Didn't think Ol' Blue Eyes and Sigmund would make an appearance with Ray Nance! Even in a typical Organissimo thread going off path! An unholy Three
  7. You people have me lost somewhere This is supposed to be about a Ray Nance disc. Right? Did Sinatra record with Nance? How come most of the posts here are about Sinatra
  8. And a Happy Birthday to you

    Ari Ambrose

I have seen some of his albums around. Now that Jim has got me interested in listening to him, which would be the best one to start with?

    Tony Bennett

Never cared much for one of his early albums which I bought because people like Art Blakey, Jo Jones, Chico Hamilton and others were aboard. The Beat of My Heart Might be time to relisten to it now that it's reissued with extra material! Edited because the original links did not work!
  19. I see more and more of these Membran collections. Great and cheap way to get music from the archives. Their prices can't be beat! If I still was in school, I would not bother on how much the individual CD cost but I'ld get started on these boxes

    Roger Guerin

I would hope so! He is 80 by now. Still appears in the brass section of the Martial Solal Dodecaband whenever it convenes, which is too rarely! Guerin was on their most recent recording (from 2000).

    TOCJ-9359

That album never received proper distribution! Only the Japanese seem to have taken care of reissuing this marvelous session. Zoot Sims in a no-frill live date with a sympathetic rhythm section. This is the essence of jazz! Zoot catches the spirit of Prez in his interpretation of 'These Foolish Tings'
