I talked to Marion Brown over the phone today. We had not talked in at least a couple of decades. He is in good spirits after a series of medical misfortunes which led to a leg amputation. He has been given some very serious compensation money and is staying in an Assisted Living home in Hollywood, Fl., where he is in good hands. Marion said he had seen and talked with Sonny Rollins and Wayne Shorter (Marion mentioned 'Alan's brother' when talking about Wayne) in recent months. Henry Grimes also. He was also glad to hear that Archie Shepp was doing fine in Paris. I told him that Shepp was back in great shape after getting a full new denture. Marion proudly told me that he was now a Buddhist. Seems that Buster Williams made a convert out of him (Buster also made Herbie Hancock a convert to buddhism!). I asked him if he was still practising. The answer was a firm yes. Saxophone and guitar. He was enthusiastic about the guitar. He still remembered the Django Reinhardt vinyls I had given him when he was in Paris in the late '60s! He is also proud of his children, his daughter is turning into a fine singer. His son Djinji is a renowned hip-hop singer http://www.angelfire.com/electronic2/bsots...002/djinji.html Following his amputation, Marion is in a wheelchair now. He was glad to hear that a number of people were concerned about his current situation. I'm sure he will be delighted to get encouragements from fans. He is at this adress: Marion Brown, Bay Point Terrace, 1200 Arthur St., Hollywood, Florida 33019 Ed.: this is a followup to this Marion Brown thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...hl=marion+brown

The only time I cut off holidays was when I visited Cuba about 4/5 years ago. The country is beautiful, most of the Cubans are extraordinary people but the whole atmosphere was so oppressing! I was keeping away from the tourists spots and was a paying guest in a home in one of the better Havana areas. Living the life of a privileged Cuban but just could not take it any more. Was to stay there for two weeks. Flew out after ten days!

Steve Lacy taking in the sun on the Ile de la Cite in the heart of Paris! I miss Steve Lacy... And the sun (it's snowing here right now)

Well we all have different tastes, I think this trio and Esbjorn Svensson are/is a very talented group of musicians. Who is to say that in years to come, we will not be talking about EST or Svensson the same way you talk about Bud Powell? Che. I'll have left the jazz scene when/if that ever happens!

That'll teach me! Can't trust anybody these days Not even Cuscuna and Ruppli The session is missing from my BN book original edition from 1988. Hope it was included in the second edition! I hope I'll know better next time I try to correct you. My deepest apologies!
-
I won't trade all the albums from EST for a solo by Bud Powell!

The Coteau du Languedoc was one of those rare - and really stunning - wines from the Mas Jullien estate. Better than some of the Bordeaux classified growths. As for being generous, EKE does not mention that I picked the restaurant and the wine and HE footed the bill! And we were left with practically no time to sample the Armagnac at my place! I'll catch up at our next meal. Whenever, wherever

That's what the Lord and other sources say. The Blue Note Label Discography book (Cuscuna/Ruppli) says that this session (the one with Eddie Bert and Tal Farlow and Melle's first session for BN) was recorded on January 31, 1953. O the joys of Discography

DRAT! We missed Jim R's birthday!

Missed the 2005 birthday deadline. In time to wish you a Happy Birthday in 2006 -
I'm with you, Adam. And have more... The 1955 Academy Award went to 'Marty'. Not a bad one. That was the year of Charles Laughton's 'Night of the Hunter', a masterpiece! The following year, Best Film went to 'Around the World in 80 Days'! That was the year of John Ford's 'The Searchers'. 1959 was the year of 'Ben Hur' which got the prize. Over 'North By Northwest', 'Some Like It Hot' or 'Rio Bravo'! Don't care about the Academy Awards anymore!

Damn, Dan! Hope you get a new job very soon! Just when we were about to check on the Charlie Parker and Art Pepper albums you have (or have not)! The Cecil Taylors I could imagine how many you have

Not the ones I saw at Magnum! The Driggs photos were all prints (most of them dupes from original prints). Did not see any negative but I did not see the full file at that agency.
-
Sonny Rollins 'There Will Never Be Another You' (Impulse France) next: 'Sonny Rollins on Impulse' (original mono issue)

I know that quite a lot of prints from the Driggs collection are with the Magnum agency. I visited their Paris headquarters several years ago. The then director was a good friend and he asked me if there was anything special I wanted to have a look at. I told him I'ld love to see the Henri Cartier-Bresson files and the Driggs files. The Cartier-Bresson files was a bit of a problem because they were in a special room of their own but I was allowed to enter that room and view several of the classic HCB negatives. The Driggs files was much less of a problem. I went through one of the filing boxes. Great stuff there. I mentioned to the director that none of those Driggs photos had been taken by Frank Driggs himself. Magnum was aware of that! For those who are not very familiar with Magnum, this was the photo agency created in 1947 in Paris by photographers (the founding fathers were Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Chim Seymour and George Rodger) to ensure that the copyrights of the photographers were protected. That's one of the problem with the photos from the collection that are being sold under the name of Frank Driggs.

Happy Birthday, Jazzypaul Hoping you're having a great day! With lots of good music!

My choice too. I keep going back to the place at least twice a year! Did not go there on a honeymoon since my first visit to the country was one year before my girl and I married. Sorry to report that $50 is not enough these days for a good hotel! But it will buy you excellent food plus wine! Besides the place is far enough from Finland for me!
