  1. All the great ones have been mentioned, one seems to have been overlooked: SONNY CLARK His BN album track records is impeccable: Dial S For Sonny Sonny's Crib Sonny Clark Trio Cool Struttin' Leapin' And Lopin' All goodies...
  2. Is there transcript of famous Downbeat blindfold test Pres did for Leonard Feather? Milan, the Lester Young/Leonard Feather BFT that appeared in the November 2, 1951 issue of Down Beat is included in 'A Lester Young Reader'. Great read...
  3. Up. Found this thread from an excellent French photographer, Philippe Gras. Quite a number of interesting images.. http://www.eye-control.net/intro.html
  4. I keep the blues albums in a separate section. Howling is filed under WOLF (not far from the WATERS, Muddy)

PMed Jan Strom who confirmed that somebody at The Wire goofed! The 'Flowers for Albert' track is played by Grimes with David Murray and Hamid Drake. The Wire will have a correction in their January issue.
  6. Adjacent to the current Unfilables thread, where do people here file their Sun Ras? I have always filed albums alphabetically: The Miles Davis albums are filed under DDDs, the Lee Morgans albums are filed under MMMs, the Sun Ras are filed under SSSs. Anybody file their Sun Ras under RRRs?
  7. The Don Ewell GTJ albums are wonderful. 'Man Here Plays Fine Piano' and 'Music to Listen to Don Ewell By' are stride piano classics. And there's Darnell Howard, Pops Foster and Minor Hall joining the fun. All magnificiently recorded by Roy DuNann. Some of DuNann's best engineering!
  8. Amazon.com would be a good way: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=glance&s=books

Who is playing with Grimes? There is a note in that The Wire issue that indicates Andrew Lamb on sax and Newman Taylor Baker on drums as being part of the Henry Grimes trio on that 'Flowers for Albert'!
  12. Clem, Cecil Taylor's passion for dance is well known. He is a great fan of Barishnykov and vice-versa. The two took part in several concerts in the eighties...
  13. I have a Japanese vinyl reissue of '2 For the Money'. Have not played that one in ages. I remember it as solid and unpretentious.
  14. Of those three, I'ld forget about the Delannoy book. Not very well researched. The Daniels is not too bad but the black (or afro-american as he keeps insisting) perspective he brings to Lester Young gets to be overdone. But he provided background on Lester Young's family and own youth. The Buchman-Moller would be my choice out of these although I wish Lewis Porter would do a complete job out of his Lestorial documentation. I have not read Porter's 'Lester Young' book in a long time but his 'Lester Young Reader' is a highly readable volume that gathers a lot of interesting articles and essays on our President.
  15. From AFP:
  16. Now it's the U.S. turn to loose a bomb! From AP:
  17. Woody Shaw 'Little Red's Fantasy' (Muse) with Frank Strozier, Ronnie Mathews, etc.
  18. Thanks for the link, Guy! Very funny (very sad too)...
  19. Be careful, Deus! Britney stinks... Definately From a recent story:
  20. Have yet to buy my first one. I stick to vinyls (and CDs)
  21. Happy birthday, Barry Harris! Indeed... He is 75 today. It's also Curtis Fuller's birthday today. He turns 70. Maybe the two have planned a jam session to celebrate B-)
  22. Looks like Gerry Mulligan jammed with some of the musicians that were at the Salon du Jazz. The Salon was held at the Salle Pleyel. The main entrance of the Salle Pleyel had been decorated to resemble a street of New Yorleans. That's were some jam sessions took place. Mulligan played on a number of occasions with other musicians, including Monk. That's obviously the source of that Isola-Monk connection. But there is no indication that Isola joined that jam. Monk had French bassist Jean-Marie Ingrand and drummer Jean-Louis Vialle in his trio during his Salon appearances.
  23. That track was recorded July 28/29, 1959 in New York. Not in 1961.
  24. Joyeux anniversaire, couw and don't listen to too much stoopid music!
  25. Gil Melle 'Gil's Guests' (Prestige, Japan Victor reissue) The guests include Kenny Dorham, Art Farmer, Hal McKusick, Julius Watkins and Don Butterfield... Another fine album from Gil Melle!
