Bertrand, the Alan Shorter album was recorded in New York with Gary Windo, tenor, Johnny Dyani, bass, flute, etc., and Rene Augustus, bells. I have the America LP 'Black Gipsy'. It's an Archie Shepp album with Chicago Beau (the singer) getting second billing. Personnel is: Shepp, soprano, Clifford Thornton, trumpet, Noah Howard, alto, Chicago Beauchamp, vocals, Julio Finn, harmonica, Leroy Jenkins, violin, Dave Burrell, piano, Earl Freeman, bass, Sonny Murray, drums. Recorded in Paris.

There were supposed to have more of those 'Americans Swinging in Paris' CDs but none has appeared yet

If you go to Discographie, you'll see that the single CD is listed at 12,76 euros. Double at 19 euros.

The series is listed on the Universal France website now. It's all in French. With details and listening samples. http://www.universalmusic.fr/servlet/Front...d=227476&page=2

New boxes from the Jazz in Paris series are out this week. Details are listed at the Universal France site. It's all in French http://www.universalmusic.fr/servlet/Front...tiste_id=103874 The four DeLuxe editions boxes look great. They are Mosaic sized. Also noticed that the From Belgium With Love 5CD box includes four previously released CDs from the series (Bobby Jaspar, Toots Thielemans, Rene Thomas, Gus Viseur) plus a Django Reinhardt disc (Jazz in Paris 102) that incorporates material that was not included in the previous Reinhardt from the series.

The store I went today did not have those Free America. Noticed new Mosaic-sized boxes of 'Jazz in Paris' sets though. These look good but from I saw these boxes do not seem to have any new material.

Excellent news, Monsieur le Connaisseur! Wish you the very best with that new job!

I know the question wasn't directed at me, Mike, but I thought I'd respond anyway. I don't exactly have "doubt"- I know it's not from SONGS FROM THE HEART, and not Hartman. I have nearly all of his recordings, and although Hartman is not a "bad" guess in that he did have that lush baritone voice, he never crossed my mind on this track 15. I'm convinced it's Joe Williams (and seeing that a certain other member with pretty decent ears had already gone with JW, I'm even more convinced. ). A/B'ed that track 15 'They Didn't Believe Me' between the BFT and the 'Songs From the Heart' LP. It's not Johnny Hartman as I wrongly stated. Will wait for mmilovan's answers!

Near & Middle Eastern World Music Thread
brownie replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Brownie, there doesn't seem to be a single important live music event in Paris since the late 1950's that you haven't seen! I really envy you ..... I saw a short excerpt from this performance in a very nice documentary on Om Kalsoum on arte TV - mesmerizing. These were the sixties and I did saw plenty. I had to curtail these memorable activities in the seventies when I married and got myself a family. Also work obligations took over. No regrets. Just great memories! -
Haven't made up my mind since this thread started. One day, I'm inclined to say JJ, then the next day I would vote for Teagarden. But then how about Bennie Green? Frank Rosolino? Lawrence Brown? and so many others. I'll abstain. They're all great!

Always a good reason to celebrate the music of Kenny Dorham. Hope Claude Schlouch will come out of his hiding place and post here more often. Why don't we celebrate KD every day I do already...

Gave the LP a listen. While the music is highly recommended, I must say the sound is not very good. Pretty flat with little dynamics. This was also the case of a number of other ABC albums. The Raney album was produced by Creed Taylor. He did not seem to have found the right engineer for some of those sessions.

That Jimmy Lyons Black Saint album was 'Give It Up'. Enrico Rava is very much together on that one. As usual.. Which is not always the case for Malik.

Near & Middle Eastern World Music Thread
brownie replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Great idea for a thread! And more music to explore. Whenever I traveled to North African or Middle East countries, one of the first thing I would do would be to tune in to the local radio stations to listen to the music. One of my most treasured live music experience was the concert Oum Kalsoum gave at the Olympia in Paris in 1967. I think it was her first appearance ever outside the arab world and planeloads of Middleastern fans (worshippers would be the right word) chartered planes to attend the event. The concert went on for something like five hours. What an incredible singer! She was magic! -
The Sassy at Tivoli is one of her best albums. You won't be disappointed. The trio backing her (Kirk Stuart on piano, Charles Williams on bass and George Hugues on drums) is very much together. Very enjoyable date.

Speaking of Jaki Byard, don't overlook 'The Jaki Byard Experience' with Rahsaan Roland Kirk while it's still available. One to enjoy!

Walt Dickerson is an old favorite! I have most of his Steeplechase albums. All of them are superb. Favorites among those include 'To My Queen Revisited', 'Peace', Serependity', 'To My Son' (this one does not seem to have been reissued since its vinyl release), 'Visions' (that's the one with Sun Ra) 'Divine Gemini' (with Richard Davis). I should get all the other Steeplechase.
