  2. Aladair Pege! Hungarian bass player (sure you know him) Anything wrong?? How many times do I have to post this...
  3. Milan, check these liner notes for Maxime Sullivan's 'Le Ruban Bleu Years' from BaldwinStreet. http://www.baldwinstreetmusic.com/nbjh303.html The last paragraph indicates the label is planning to release pre-194O transcription sides. Those BaldwinStreet CDs are hard to find around these parts... Merry Xmas!
  4. Uptown vinyls were pulled out earlier today. And now spinning: - Allen Eager 'Renaissance' next: - Jimmy Gourley 'The Left Bank of New York'

  7. Where's the sound for that one??? http://www.cmoa.org/teenie/form.asp?img=1090#void Lucky Thompson, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker playing for Maestro Billy Eckstine
  8. Got that one too! Santa Claus took goot note of jazz wants I included in my Christmas wish list. That plus Larry Kart's book. Which I wll sip and enjoy slowly... Also got an unrequested - happy surprise - JSP box: 'Cajun Early Recordings'. That one put me on a great mood right away. My wife and I have very fond memories of the few days we spent in Cajun territory back in 1976 when we did a trip across the USA. Stayed in Lafayette and spent a full day having the time of our live at a cajun festival in Lake Charles.
  9. Zizala, there are plenty of us (me included) who need glasses. No need to be shy. None of us really bite. So just join in and share... Welcome and Merry Xmas!
  10. Took a quick look at the site. Among the gems I noticed: Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan with what looks like the first Eckstine big band with Lucky Thompson, Howard McGhee, George Duvivier or Tommy Potter(?), among others http://www.cmoa.org/teenie/form.asp?img=1094 Count Basie and Stan Getz: http://www.cmoa.org/teenie/form.asp?img=1141 Art Blakey and Horace Silver (Hank Mobley behind Silver) holding copies of their just released BN albums at a radio show: http://www.cmoa.org/teenie/form.asp?img=1230 Rahsaan in an early appearance: http://www.cmoa.org/teenie/form.asp?img=1453 Oliver Nelson! But what's he holding? http://www.cmoa.org/teenie/form.asp?img=1473 There are plenty of great images of the Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Count Basie bands, etc.
  11. It is. The McKusick quartet (with Galbraith, Milt Hinton and Osie Johnson) recorded that Bethlehem date plus the Coral 'Jazz At The Academy' album. Both very recommended, indeed!
  12. Simply amazing! What a treasure trove! On that 1100 series, there's also images of Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson, the full Count Basie band with Jimmy Rushing and Don Byas, Nat King Cole, Erroll Garner, Ray Charles with the Raelets and many more. There's also the 1944 Earl Hines band with Billy Eckstine and Budd Johnson (1457) but no Bird... Many thanks for posting this, Medjuck!
  13. Aladair Pege! Hungarian bass player (sure you know him)
  14. When you get your copy, you'll notice that on "These Foolish Things" you can quite clearly hear the next sequence of notes under the regular sound. As relayed to me by another board member, the current speculation is that this is tape print and that the tape was probably wound too tight for too long. I have the Japan Coral/MCA vinyl reissue (1995) of this and cannot hear that on the copy. What bothers me on the album is the added audience participation. The dated sounds like itwas recorded in a studio. Clunky, this one is really good too. George Russell also arranged six of the ten selections.
  15. Checked the Uptown Discography. Can help with details that seem to be missing for the following vinyls: - Allen Eager 'Renaissance' - Jimmy Gourley 'The Left Bank of New York' (Toot's Suite is credited to Holman) - Tommy Flanagan 'Nights at the Vanguard' Also the Carl Fontana date 'The Great Fontana' (September 1985) is missing. Bought the vinyl when it came out plus the CD with the two additional tracks which was issued later.
  16. I also remember the Frank Rehak interview which appeared in the August and September, 1984 issues of Cadence. Rehak gave a very interesting account of his drug-rehabilating stay at Synanon.
  17. Hal McKusick 'Cross Section-Saxes' (Decca Japan) Still thrilled by 'You're My Thrill' (superb George Russell arrangement) and 'It Never Entered My Mind (Jimmy Giuffre arrangement)!
  18. Michael Fitzgerald already provided the data... You're in for a treat! This one is MAGNIFIQUE! Discovered the date on a French MCA vinyl reissue. Later switched to a Japanese Decca reissue which has the best sound so far. Surprised that you still have to really get into McKusick. One of the most individual voices of the 50s and 60s. I rank him right next to Lee Konitz. At the top! His 'Jazz Workshop' RCA album is one of the two best of the series with the George Russell. And his quartet date on Bethlehem with Barry Galbraith is another stunner.
  19. ... where it should have been from the start! Vinyls rule!
  20. Very nice paper on RJG. Thanks for posting it, BFrank! I read his articles in Down Beat and in Rolling Stone. There is no equivalent to those articles nowadays
  21. 'True Blue' LP on EBay. $479 and five more days on the auction block... How high will it go? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4062379250&rd=1

    Jack Teagarden

There seems to be some confusion with the Jack Teagarden Bethlehem and the Jack Teagarden Urania albums. Two different records. The Urania album 'Accent on Trombone' had T playing with Ruby Braff, Sol Yaged, Lucky Thompson, Kenny Kersey, etc. The Bethlehem album 'Jazz Great' had T playing with various musicians including Jimmy McPartland, Edmund Hall, Walter Page, Jo Jones, etc..
  23. LONG article on Wayne Shorter in The New York Times today.
  24. Simosko did write the liner notes for the Chaloff Mosaic box. Have not read those notes.
  25. If you're going to do something on Twardzick, may I recommend the Vladimir Simosko book on Serge Chaloff. Quite a character for what you seem to be looking for!
