  1. Brownie how's this one, I notice it's being reissued in Japna on CD . I'm on big Costa kick at present with the recent reappearance of a number of titles on Fresh Sounds. It's excellent. One of Sal Salvador's best albums. With Eddie Costa well featured on piano (side A of the vinyl) and vibes (side B). You won't be disappointed with that one! Sound on that vinyl reissue was superb. Hope the CD's sound is just as good.
  2. Up because now Victor Conte tells all (all?!?)about it. From AFP:

From what I remember, the session was not really completed. And then the Columbia executives probably thought it better just to ignore it. Columbia did issue the Burton Greene 'Presenting Burton Greene' album which did not sell well.
  4. My first pick would be Hawk Eyes, followed by Soul. My picks as well, though I would through in a rec. too for the meeting with Lockjaw Davis (NIGHT HAWK) and the date with Vic Dickenson and Joe Thomas. Then there is that highly charged 'Very Saxy' session with Arnett Cobb, Eddie Davis and Buddy Tate where all four seem to get at each other throats. In a very friendly and swinging way
  5. Noticed this on the Fantasyjazz.com site. This was news to me! Rollins was recording a new album just before his wife's death... This was obviously written before the sad news.
  6. Lineup was the regular Phil Woods quartet at the time: Phil Woods with Mike Melillo on piano, Steve Gilmore on bass and Bill Goodwin on drums!
  7. What I also like about Woody Allen is that he is among the rare current cinematographers still shooting films in black and white. Some of the best of those include 'Manhattan', 'Zelig', 'Shadows and Fog' and 'Stardust Memories'. 'Celebrity' also was shot in black and white but I don't rate that one as high as those others.
  8. Cobbs also plays on several other Ayler albums, including: - Swing Low Sweet Spiritual (also known as 'Goin' Home'), - on one track - 'Angels' - of the ESP 'Spirits Rejoice' session, - the Nuits de la Fondation Maeght concert albums.
  9. Couple Eddie Costas spinning... Just finishing: - Sal Salvador 'Frivolous Sal' (Bethlehem/Polydor Japan reissue) and next: - Eddie Costa 'The House of Blue Lights' (Dot/MCA Japan reissue)
  10. Bentsy, the book that is inside the 'Holy Ghost' box says that Cobbs 'died shortly after Ayler, from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run accident'. Cobbs whom I had the privilege to meet was a very nice and quiet man. He died on September 21, 1971 in New York.
  11. Probably because it's a reissue from the early '60s. The original was 'Jazz Lab' on Jubilee which came out around 1958 with a different cover!
  12. Thanks Garth for providing this. Since I missed the actual auction, I was wondering how much some of those albums did fetch. I am pretty impressed with some of the prices various albums that are in my collection reached. I'll keep this list and show it to my wife next time she mentions she could have bought a lot of more useful stuff with the money I was spending on these albums I'll try to hang to my LPs for a few more years!
  13. Wish I could but none of my Tetes were Made in Japan

    Matthew Gee

He died July 18, 1979 in New York. He played off and one with Duke Ellington from 1959 to 1963. He has the first trombone solo on 'C Jam Blues' from the 'Blues in Orbit' album.
  15. Mike, few people are aware of that Hal Gaylor http://www.fantasyjazz.com/catalog/gaylor-...s-bean_cat.html but those who are aware know this is a superb album!
  16. An old favorite - and one of the very best one! - that always manages to get lost in the crowd: 'Jazz Portraits' on UA/BN reissue with Booker Ervin and John Handy.
  17. Hope they won't disappear but if they do and if you don't have these yet, try getting them: - Howard McGhee 'Maggie's Back In Town' (Contemporary), - Zoot Sims, all the Pablos are better than very good, - the two Wardell Gray Memorial Prestige CDs, - Gigi Gryce 'Rat Race Blues' (New Jazz) and there are plenty, plenty more...
  18. Spent - and lost - too much time looking for the correct answer to track 6 (our man Prez). I was looking in the wrong direction since the answer was practically right in front of me. That one was track 6 of disc 1 from this box (it also shows up on various compilations): http://www.vanguardrecords.com/s2s/ And another thanks to Milan for making me return to that wonderful set.
  19. Bol, yes. They're all in French.
  20. And what's gotten in to you? I don't get kicks out of Jankowski ... and tolerate a passion for his music only from people I know who have broad tastes which seems to be the case for this newbie
  21. I was about to post a welcome yesterday when I read that you were on a Horst Jankowski kick... and decided I'ld better abstain. But you seem to be all right. You should be in good company here! So a warm welcome to you!
  22. Bill Fenhor has given the details for a number of BeeHives I have. Among those not listed yet, I have Dizzy Reece 'Manhattan Project'. Anybody looking for data on this LP?
  23. Annette became Peacock when she married Gary in 1960. She was born Annette Coleman. Sure you don't want to know about the Bleys, Paul and Carla and others...
  24. Aric, I'll add one more SUPURFLURY item. Shortly after the film came out - remember it was a very big international hit - I had dinner with Paul Bley and his then companion Annette Peacock. Everything went fine until Annette Peacock who probably thought she had to be nice to a Frenchman mentioned that 'A Man and a Woman' was her current favorite song. It took me years to get over that negative feeling about her. It's over now and I get kicks out of her albums these days! You can ban me now
