Pete LaRoca 'Basra' (BN mono) then more BN vinyl: Joe Henderson 'Mode for Joe'
-
Checked my copy of 'Basra'. Front and back covers are very clean with very little wear marks. Vinyl has ears very visible - in addition to the regular Van Gelder stampers - and is superclean. NY USA labels, 61st Street adress on back cover. Vinyl is in the 61st Street inside cover with the1939-1965 26 Years of Blue Note images of the BN albums released around that time. Keeping this mono BN for the time being. If I have to sell this - and other items - it will mean that I will be approaching dire times as far as finances are concerned and I am hoping to keep that time away as long as possible. But if selling time approaches, I will make sure to check with you on eBay selling matters

What else??? Somethin'... That was a no-brainer!
-
Thanks Wolff, I'll check my copy when I get back home later today. And I have yet to sell (or buy) anything from eBay yet!

A hearty Happy Thanksgiving Day to all our American friends... from an Old European!
-
Wolff, any idea how much would a very clean copy of Basra mono vinyl fetch? Might soon have to start thinking of selling some of the albums I have.
-
Agree that the later recordings of Joe Thomas show he lost some of his spark but his contribution to that Coleman Hawkins All Stars was noteworthy as I recall. Will spin this again. This is the right time to celebrate Hawkins (and Joe Thomas)!
-
Joe Thomas is also featured on the Coleman Hawkins All Stars date from 1960 (with Vic Dickenson, Tommy Flanagan, etc.) that was recorded for Swingville. This has been reissued on OJC.

The Mosaic/Verve Jazztet set is available in Paris shops by now.
-
My copy arrived too. Sounds real good!
-
Charles Kynard 'The Soul Brotherhood' (Prestige), great lineup of Blue Mitchell, David Newman, Grant Green, Jimmy Lewis and Mickey Roker. Not really as good as it should, next: Grant Green 'Iron City!' (Cobblestone)
-
Wolff, what Mosaic LP are you referring to?
-
Couw, Mine's a 1990 King album. I don't recall anything wrong with it but I'll give it a spin and let you know. Thanks. It is most notable on the vibe solos. Here is a 10 second snippet from somewhere towards the end of Eddie's solo on Another You (300Kb 192kpbs mp3; right-click-save or copy-paste the URL in the address bar). It sounds like a digital swoosh you get on lo-fi mp3s. Does anyone have the same Savoy/Denon CD? Gave a close listen to that Eddie Costa 'There'll Never Be Another You' solo on the 1990 King/Savoy reissue LP I have. I could not detect any flutter. Sound came distortion free! Only vibrations from the vibraphone, the way it should be. Long live vinyl

couw, no need to rub it in. I refuse to pay that much - and there are four more days to go - for an album! But those tapes will hopefully turn up one day

Late, 'Scorpio' was one of the Byg/Actuel LPs. It was released under Arthur Jones' name. Just in case you are not aware, here is a list of the Actuel releases from Michael Fitzgerald's website: http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Labels/byg.htm And just to add, I can assure you - I was at some of the dates and witnessed this - that the musicians who took part in those sessions were paid. Don't think they were paid a lot, but they were paid. And also I'm pretty sure they are not getting any money out of the reissues. The Actuel people approached Cecil Taylor for a record session and he refused far various reasons notably because the money was not right. The Actuel guyes then turned to Jimmy Lyons and Andrew Cyrille who were part of the then CT Unit. The two of them accepted and recorded their first albums under their name for the Actuel series.

Great fan of Bob Dorough ever since I heard him on the two tracks he recorded with Miles Davis back in 1962: 'Blue X-Mas' (still my favorite Xmas song) and 'Nothing Like You'. Several favorite albums (none is really easy to find nowadays): - 'Devil May Care' reissued a few years ago on Bethlehem, - 'Just About Everything' reissued on Evidence, that one should be available, - 'Who's On First', the BN live date with Dave Frishberg. Love that one. Worth the Search! The just released Iridium live date is a pretty good place to start! Bob Dorough is an infectuous pleasure. Also worth searching is 'Hoagy Carmichael Stardust Memories' on A-Records where he, Barbara Lea and Jim Ferguson go through the Carmichael repertoire. Very nice, that one too!

One eBay seller is auctioning some 800 vinyls that were part of the LP collection of Evan Parker. One sample: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4054281356&rd=1 You can click on the 'View seller's other items' line for a look at other vinyls...

Chris (and Chuck), great stories. Keep them coming. Since I know a number of people involved with the Byg/Actuel label, there is one name missing here, the mastermind behind it all: Jean Georgakarakos. He was the real crook! From what I know, I regard the others as plain hustlers.
-
That one is a wild Byg/Actuel! Really far out but you get a good chance to hear the little know French bass player Beb Guerin! Never really managed to enjoy that LP! I much prefer the Sonny Sharrock Vortex album 'Black Woman' with Linda too. And accompaniament by Dave Burrell, Norris Jones and Milford Graves!

Has A Blindfold Test Track Inspired a Purchase?
brownie replied to Dan Gould's topic in Blindfold Test
I did and got 'Something Wonderful' because of Nancy and the musicians featured behind her (Ben Webster, Jack Marshall, Joe Comfort, Shelly Manne) and despite the scandalously short playing time (30 minutes 04 seconds). Wish reissue producer Michael Cuscuna had included a second album there. And this Made in the EU CD is Copy Controlled The bastards!!! -
EMANEM 4006 Doesn't look to be a new release. I remember seeing a two LP edition of these a couple decades ago. On Emanem vinyl!

I have a short attention span and want to fight it. I'm joining in the Christmas spirit!

With ESP reactivating its catalogue, this December 1973 concert at NYC's Town Hall Sun Ra CD is out now: http://www.espdisk.com/esp3033.html The link includes sounds samples. This had been previously issued on a German ESP disc in not very good sound. Sound on the US ESP should be better. I have not heard the new issue yet.
