Talk of Deja vu. Latest news from the doping front. One of the two tests proved positive. Hamilton being cleared of doping violations is just one of the latest joke from the medics officials of the cycling world. The guy has been caught thrice in recent weeks. And he now has been cleared by the IOC! From Reuters:

About 140. Not counting the dozen Classics Blues & Rhythm Series. But counting the latest two I bought today: - Benny Goodman 1946, - Artie Shaw 1946-1950.

In Paris with Brownie.....A great cigar morning, noon and night. I'm there!! Nothing like poking around in great record collections and full humidors!! What's a 'tabac'? A tabac is a French cafe (or bistro) that sells cigarettes plus various things including some cigars. wolff, you're welcome to join us for the search of the Paris Bluesnik cafe B-) I'll provide the cigars...

Most surely the Left Bank. For years, I was under the impression that it was right next to the Le Chat Qui Peche club on the Rue de la Huchette where McLean was playing in the early sixties but it's not. Bertrand might know. Or Vincent probably asked McLean already. couw, I'm not even starting to go to all the Paris tabacs. Unless you come back to Paris and start exploring the cafes scene and their wines (OK, beers for you )

I have now identified 11. It's track 15 from that reissue: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:aly67uq080j0 Sorry about this, Jim. Carter and Hawk. The trumpet player gave it away for me. Should also have recognised the piano player. Also the clarinet player.

You're still safe for the time being. My Varsity Seven suggestion was off track. Got hold of the Savoy reissue LP 'The Varsity Session vol. 1' and that track remains not identified. But I'm sure about Benny Carter and almost sure about Hawk! Bet you that Tom Storer must be laughing in his corner...

Have read through the various replies now and Agustin pinned this one way before I did. But just because I was invading Spain at the time the BFT 17 reached me

Jackie McLean 'Bluesnik' (BN 63rd St). Love the album. And the cover. Wish I knew where the Paris outdoor cafe where McLean sits and watches the surroundings is located to check it out!

EKE BBB, the Classics come at around €11 when they are released. Slightly more later. I get most of the new releases at about €8 from a couple of shops but supplies are limited.

I have yet to buy anything from ebay, although I tried a couple of times and was outbid each time. But if Dan Gould is labeled 'a nice person' by the gnomes at ebay, I understand there's something wrong there

Coming in late and moreover will have to relisten to this disc 1 for more identifications but before all this I must mention I did realise that Tom Storer was an interesting character but I had not realized how hip he really was. Picking up tracks 5 and 10 are proof that the man knows the real values in jazz. And what can be hipper for an American than to be living in Paris... And now my early (even if late) impressions: 1- 'My Favorite Things' by an inspired pianist. Have been unable to identify him. 2- the classic 'High Society'. And a great one! Was not really sure of who the musicians were until the clarinet player came in. I have the OOP Mosaic 6LPs box that does not show on the Mosaic site anymore. It is track 1 of this album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:27ri28or052a 3- The tune sounded familiar, nice BN music. All was revealed when the tenor player came in. The trumpet player helped pin the album. The later ensembles made the name of the tuned evident. Track 5: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:pg47gjvr86i9 4- A very nice interpretation of the Vernon Duke classic 'Taking a Chance on Love'. I am still trying to identify this trio. 5- A very favorite (and very maligned) trombone player. I have loved that album for ages. Great players all around. The one negative thing I could say about this tune is that the tenor player is left out on it. The tune would have been a natural for him too! Track 1 from: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:5sq8g44btvoz 6- Andy Bey singing from the Duke repertoire. Never heard that one! A very Ducal interpretation. Duke and Strayhorn would have loved this. Had trouble with Bey vocalizing before but am digging the man more and more. 7- A hit tune from a couple of decades ago: Killing Me Softly with the Blues. The players are unknown to me! 8- the tune and the players are unidentifiable, as far as I am concerned. Not sure I am impressed. Will need to relisten. 9- a tranish quartet. This is getting a bit better. 10- for a couple of seconds I heard Zoot but the truth emerged right after. The sound was unmistakable. Take 1 from another very favorite album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:w9s9kebtjq7v 11- One of the Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins collaborations. Just don't have time to locate the album but I would say this is a tune from that unit: http://www.redhotjazz.com/varsity7.html 12- another favorite album. Which was a different output - a very welcome one -from the leader. Title track (OK, almost!) from this one: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:88jleay14xu7 13- could not identify the sax player who leapt in. Will look for the answer to this!

Will not travel to Brussels to visit the FNAC store there. My favorite secondhand store (Jussieu Musique) sells plenty of Hatologies at €10.9 and the seller gives me a discount because I buy often. The FNAC sellers ignore me most of the time because they're too busy talking about the last TV show they watched! I keep my business at places like Jussieu Musique.

I wait for the next rain to wash my car B-) Or almost! I use my car in Paris once or twice a week. It sits in a garage most of the time. I use it mainly for quick trips around France or for holidays (usually abroad). The car gets an automatic washing after each long drives. The quicker it's done, the better! The car still looks almost new after four years. Was at the Paris auto show today to find out whether I would fall in love with a new one. And did not.

Agustin, the Hatology CDs are more expensive at the Paris FNAC stores. Just out of curiosity, what was the price of a Chronogical Classics CD? The Hatology CDs sell for €13 in a couple of Paris secondhand stores.

Found a copy of 'Carrousel' on the Finlandia label. Very enjoyable 1996 album recorded with the Tapiola Sinfonietta plus musicians including Terry Clarke on drums. That's the one where she sings nine compositions by Heikki Sarmanto. There are also two instrumentals. 'Carrousel' is one of the better of the recent Merrill records (can't think of a bad one). Her voice is just lovely! And she looks much better on the cover of the CD I have than on this release: http://www.helenmerrill.com/discography/discog09.html

I want to make something perfectly clear...

Can we have a peace treaty signed by all involved now? -
Jimmy Gourley 'The Jazz Trio' with Marc Johnson on bass and Philippe Combelle on drums. A vinyl from the short-lived Bingow label. The session has been reissued on the Elabeth label with two alternates takes. This is a splendid straight-swining album from this Chicago guitar player who has been living in France for half a century now.

Currently perfuming the room with smoke from a Gispert Habaneras No. 2. Purchased a box of these Small Coronas during an expedition to Andorra where the Havanas are cheaper than anywhere else in the world including Cuba. Other Havanas I bought with the help of the last edition of Havanoscope, a yearly French newspaper size edition that deals with Havana cigars only and rates all the available brands. An amazing range of those are available in Andorra. These are some of the cigars I bought (in small quantities all!): - Bolivar Belicosos Finos, - Cuaba Tradicionales, - El Rey del Mundo Grandes de Espana, - H. Upmann Connoisseur No. 1, - H. Upmann Sir Winston Churchill, - Partagas Serie du Connaisseur No. 1, - Partagas Serie du Connaisseur No. 2, - Punch Churchills, - Punch Double Coronas, - Saint Luis Rey Churchills, - Saint Luis Rey Coronas. Planning to enjoy the Punches I never smoked before. Just an idea of the prices for these handmade cigars, the Punch Churchill sells for €7,15 (about $8,5). The same Punch sells for €12 in Paris stores. The evening is a smoking one

How many jazz cds do you own?
brownie replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have mostly vinyls. Bought few CDs when they came out, then more and more. About ten years ago, I had a storage furniture custom-built to house some 1,600 CDs and stupid me thought this was plenty enough. The unit has been filled for the past 2 or 3 years. And the additional CDs pile up whenever there's space available in the small room I use to enjoy music. Now I lack wall space to house a second piece of furniture. That one would be filled too by now! The music room is a dumping ground for vinyls and CDs by now. I'll need several more decades to enjoy all this music -
Visited the regular Paris stores after a four-week absence. This is what I got: - Al Cohn/Zoot Sims 'Motoring Along' (Sonet), - Duke Ellington Presents Ivie Anderson (Columbia 2CD set) - Clifford Jordan Quintet (with Junior Cook) 'Two Tenor Winner' (CrissCross) - Helen Merrill 'Carrousel' (Finlandia Records) - Jackie Paris Sings the Lyrics of Ira Gershwin (Time Japan)

Tal Farlow Mosaic set released in Europe?
brownie replied to andersf's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's a bit steep, isn't it: the Mosaic price is $119 or €97.50 for each set. I guess the much lower shipping cost within Europe makes up for it, though. it ships for free within Germany/Austria/Switzerland. No customs either (money nor hassle), so I guess that makes it an even deal. Yeah, but you don't get individually numbered sets, and those are worth a few extra bucks! B-) But those Mosaics sold in Europe come with different numbers! My Tal Farlow set (bought for €89 in taxless Andorra) has no individual number but the box spine lists the set as B0002992-02, not the Mosaic MD7-224 regular number. Which makes these sets invaluable items for the Mosaic completists! My Gerry Mulligan Concert Band Mosaic box bore a B0000958-02 number instead of the US Mosaic MD4-221! Discs inside are the regular US Mosaic CDs. -
Volume 4 of the Masters of Jazz series on Dizzy Gillespie ends with a previously unissued head arrangement featuring Dizzy accompanied by a couple of other trumpet players and a rhythm section, all unidentified. Dizzy's playing on this incomplete 'The Dizzy Crawl' is plain magnificient. The number was recorded by Jerry Newman at Clark Monroe's Uptown Club in October 1941. A shame that those Masters of Jazz albums are no longer available.

Revenant is planning big Albert Ayler box
brownie replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Just want to mention that I have had dealings with Revenant Records about the Albert Ayler box. Revenant is using three of my photos in the booklet that comes with the box. I have had quite a number of jazz photos published before but Revenant is the first company to pay money (I must say pretty good money) for it. As far as I am concerned, this is a very serious company. And I trust they will make the royalties available to the rightful heirs. -
Masterhit is fine. It is 7/4 numerous dubious quick post hits that bother. Those are the ones to wipe out! B-) When I noticed the Masterhit item, my first reaction was that 7/4 hat hit some kind of jackpot It means that 7/4 is #8 instead of #7 for most posts. You have a valley of tears from this side of the Ocean for losing one position!

Lon, your reply was right on target. The Chronogical Classics series are not perfect but they're the most consistent, complete (as long as you stick to master takes) and reliable purveyors of jazz music from beyond 50 years ago. Also they keep their full series available long after they came out. Waiting to see what they will make out of the Sun Ra discography chaos
