    John Gilmore

Is 'Cymbals' out? Thought this was unissued. Keen to hear that Gilmore solo!
  2. Jimmy Giuffre. Even if he is not playing any more. He (and his records) are still very alive!
  3. Relistening to this LP and agree with Bill Fenhor. The notes (by Chris Sheridan) point out that Allan Botschnisky was on flugelhorn on the 'Short Story' album that was recorded two weeks later. On this 'Scandia Skies' album, Ericson sits out on the KD feature 'Scandia Skies' while KD sits out on the Ericson feature 'Manha de Carnival'. Ericson is listed as playing trumpet AND flugelhorn (he is on flugelhorn on 'Solar')! The LP also has a back cover photo of both Dorham and Ericson enjoying a gathering at a table.
  4. There was a thread on this about a year ago. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...arlie+christian
  5. Beg to differ. There was nothing temporal about the recognition. It was quite instantaneous. Nearly every jazz fans who heard the LP raved about it. That one plus the BN Village Vanguard LP. I'm speaking from the European perspective. When Rollins brought a trio at the Club Saint-Germain in Paris in 1959, everybody in the audience was waiting for the tunes from those albums.
  6. It came on the wire minutes after a first search proved negative. I was glad it went negative. Very sad now...
  7. Disc 2, part two... 14- back to Afro-Cuba. I could not remember April on that one, but the piano player left me rather indifferent about it, 15- went nowhere with this. I'm sure the players are favorites. 16- I get kicks out of this sax player and can kick myself for missing the album I am pretty sure it is taken from. Could be track 7 fromthis one: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:p0otk6axwkrw 17- another vibe player. Teddy Charles? I'll listen to the full album after the results. 18- a most unique violin player. And a very favorite. Tricky of Mike to include this but a very wise decision since it will enable many people to get acquainted with him. Track 8: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:ftx8b5p4psqh 19- loved this. I heard so many of those sides when I was growing up. Know where this music comes from but do not know the players or the tune, 20- Clapton in the house? with Mayall? Those vinyls have long been filed away from the rest of the jazz albums. I enjoyed these sides when they came out but do not return to them these days, 21- more vibe player. Could this be Tjader which Mike loves so much. 22- a superb example of a great jazzman playing. Track 11. I don't share Mike's passion for Tjader but certainely do for this one! Beautiful! And one of his best solo. 23- It had to finish with that one. Track 8 from the same previous album. Many thanks Mike for assembling this. 23 tracks that's quite a job! Hope you had as much fun compiling this as I had trying to reassemble the puzzle. I'll deal with disc 1 later. Forget about a previous remark. I must have been in a bad disposition when gave it a first listen. That disc 1 is starting to grow on me. The only problem is I have no clues on any of the musicians. I'll get back to it...
  8. I'll start with Disc 2. 23 tracks! That's a lot of wonderful music and some surprises. Also a very carefully conceived program. I will have to wait for the published results to find out what's behind a number of unheard sides. I love this disc. It has so much of the type of music I have a passion for. 1- It's gone on the right track from the start. I have followed the career of this very distinguished musician from the days I was beginning to enjoy jazz. Track 1: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:ifduak1kgm3b 2- This one is killing me because I am familiar with this but could not trace it. The arrangement by Quincy Jones is unmistakable. I should have identified the excellent pianist! 3- Same for that one. Love that early bebop side. Leo Parker is here but could not name the tune. 4- Shame on me. Went nowhere with that. Was sure I was going to identify on a first hearing of this BFT, 5- same here. I recognize the Duke contingent and its rabbit. One I will need to look for when truth is revealed. Very enjoyable tune, 6- got that right away. Track 1: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:qg09kectkq7v I had not noticed before how Lunceford-like that band could sound! The alto solo is a marvel! 7- Lovely afro-cuban side. Felt like dancing. What's this? 8- An easy one. The piano player had that unmistakable sound. I visited the street so many times when I started writing on jazz. Those trumpet players were something else! Track 4: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:wcfwxqr0ldte 9- another one I should identify. Another bebop performance I love. Those sax players I have heard dozen of times but could not identify. 10- I searched all over my Pettifords and drew blank. Very nice. 11- One of my favorite tenor player in an early appearance. Track 1: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:by7ibkd9hak0 I have this on the box that gathers material from that label. The piano player was in Paris a number of times. An underrated musician if there ever was one. 12- a mid-fifties performance I am not familiar with. Could the vibraphone player be Joe Roland? I know the piano player will be a surprise but I could not identify him. That's one of the best unidentified music from the album. 13- a Tal Farlow trio? but went through the Mosaic box and several other albums. (to be followed)
  9. Checked on the newswires and elsewhere and see nothing to substantiate that! Long live Superman!
  10. On 'Skylark', I would say he was following Creed Taylor's instructions. The majority of Taylor's produced sessions have those overweight basses.
  11. Forever young...
  12. I was around when 'Saxophone Colossus' was released and - along with a lot of people - was taken over by the sheer brillance. Same thing with John Coltrane's first albums. And then when Albert Ayler's 'Spiritual Unity' exploded. Is there any album by one of the current saxophonists that hit you in the face the same way those did in their time? I have not but would love to hear one.
  13. The Seine river is just around the corner! My better half has better sense than trying this. She knows she is not allowed to approach the box
  14. How old is that in France? 37? Coincidentally, that's my age. --eric 65 Old enough to have seen the one and only Clifford Brown!
  15. Same reaction here. My wife said the music 'sounds suicidal'!
  16. The three sets were expensive but at €10 a LP, I thought they were excellent value for money. I have enjoyed them when they came out. And plan to relisten to them often before I become a senile centenarian
  17. I treat the Mosaics no different from the way I treat other albums. With respect and care! The Mosaics are being listened to pretty often, except for the Commodore boxes which are more complicated to deal with. A pity, there's a lot of unique music inside the three sets.
  18. I like a number of the new ones. They just ain't in a Prez/Hawk/Coltrane/Rollins/Ayler frame. Rollins was 26 when he put out 'Saxophone Colossus'. Any of the current ones recorded an equivalent album yet?
  19. Three favorite versions; - Fats Waller and his Rhythm - Michel Legrand 'Legrand Jazz' (with Miles Davis) - Eric Dolphy
  20. Old enough to retire this year.
  21. News of the death of French philosopher Jacques Derrida was announced today. From AFP:
  22. Warne Marsh 'Ne Plus Ultra' (Revelation) It's always a pleasure to return to the sounds of this extraordinary musician. For the added tracks, will look for the HatArt reissue when it comes out. But I love the sound of this vinyl. Main engineering by Pete Welding!
  23. Ran Blake 'Rapport' (Novus). Was very glad to get this today. Absorbing album of solo pieces by the great Blake, duos with Ricky Ford plus appearances by Anthony Braxton and Chris Connor! Love this one!
  24. Used to go there a long time ago. The Porte de Vanves flea market was full of jazz treasures back then. I've given up on the Paris street fairs several years ago after I found there was less and less jazz vinyls available. I don't recall street sales in the Montmartre area unless you mean the Flea Market just north of Montmartre. The people who were selling vinyls (it was the best area for vinyls back in the 60s and 70s) have no more. They have been replaced by clothes vendors! If you are looking for secondhand vinyls in Paris, the best stores are Paris Jazz Corner and CrocoJazz on the Left Bank but the interesting items have long gone or are at pretty steep prices!
