  1. What a difference a year makes. Last year, a great side-long jam by masters (and another cut IIRC). This year ... this. Missing the throw-up emoji right about now. TRACK 1: I have never had any urge to listen to the Headhunters and I still don't. Zero stars. TRACK 2: See #1, only more so. TRACK 3: Compared to the others, 5 stars. Reality? 2 or 2 1/2. TRACK 4: All I can hear is the Office Space scene where they are uploading the software to steal the fractional pennies for themselves. Zero stars. TRACK 5: NO TRACK 6: No guesses, 2 1/2 stars TRACK 7: Also 2 1/2 stars, and agree with Felser that trombonist is strong. TRACK 8: 2 stars. TRACK 9: How appropriate: I couldn't stand this BFT either. Like I said, what a difference a year makes.
  2. Yes, I pointed this one out to Allen on FB. Makes a nice live recording to add to the LP that Allen recorded: https://www.discogs.com/release/6186461-Dickey-Myers-Dickeys-Mood
  3. Very glad Wilyer Abreu got a Gold Glove (and as a rookie, no less). His defense was terrific and his hitting more than acceptable, with room for improvement. If he gets packaged for some immediate improvement like a pitcher or RH power hitter, I'll be annoyed, most likely. https://www.mlb.com/redsox/news/wilyer-abreu-wins-2024-gold-glove-award-red-sox Abreu recorded seven Outs Above Average, tied for first in MLB with Brewers outfielders Jackson Chourio and Sal Frelick. Abreu led the Majors in Defensive Runs Saved by a right fielder with 17, and his nine assists tied Hunter Renfroe and Juan Soto for most at the position.
  4. Interesting add up just today: Howard McGhee combo featuring Joe Carroll and Tommy Turrentine. https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/collections/2137/collection_resources/138038
  5. That was weak and she didn't bring much to the role either. The music was the highlight and it took three minutes out of a 3:42 short to get to the one punch line that the rehab facility is Maxwell House.
  6. Not as much as they would have behind home plate, but for WS, probably $100 each, as a guess.
  7. @Aggie87 👍 The bagel flavors look traditional too so ... I am getting a hankering. The bagel place I went to before I got away from them were excellent bagels, highly questionable home-made cream cheese mix-ins. Lox or scallions for me.
  8. Does no one browse record stores anymore? Nobody is stuck on the path of THE NARRATIVE. I started a good bit before the Internet but not as far back as BBS. At that time there were plenty of OJC vinyl (and Liberty BNs for that matter) where you could find Gene Ammons records, I am quite sure. And Ramsey Lewis Argos.
  9. I'm off of bagels since May 31. I think I'd need a better photo to judge their offerings, but Kettleman's is the right name ... don't some "bagel" places skip the boil in water part?
  10. Basic defensive principle: You can't let someone get beyond the defense on a hail mary. If someone stays with the guy who positioned himself there, almost certainly nothing happens. Nothing bad at least. And don't tell me that wasn't holding on #55 during the scramble.

  12. It is written with enthusiasm - a surprising number of exclamation points coming from an 'academic' on a university press imprint. The writing is fine IMO. My quibbles: Page 7: "Mandel, in noting the innovations of saxophonists Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and others ..." That's just a big old whoopsie. Page 17: ".... Herbie Hancock's smash hit song from his first solo album, Takin' Off." IMO "solo" album has a specific meaning in jazz. We can say that Paul McCartney's first Wings album was his first "solo" recording post-Beatles. But for jazz, the correct descriptor is "leader date". Page 165: "... it sounded like the riot at the Stonewall Inn in 1969 for LGBTQ rights." To me this is projection into the past of current concerns/alliances. Stonewall was about gay rights specifically.
  13. I should also mention that Miles, especially Bitches Brew, is recognized as important in the popular definition of "important jazz of the 60s"/
  14. I think the point that should be made is that which is popular cannot be important or worthy of discussion and this book is meant as an argument against that. His point is that the history of jazz in the 60s is presented as Ornette - Coltrane - Ayler. That has never changed IMO and really doesn't have to do with the Young Lions thing which was marketing of a return to pre-60s styles. The fact that Brown or Bradford don't figure in it doesn't mean that Ornette - Trane - Ayler isn't the focus of "important" 60s jazz, and this book is meant to establish that there was a whole nother thing that was popular and important in its own way among jazz consumers. Young Lions was marketing and liner notes - mostly by Crouch. I have several quibbles I will post about this book later but overall I highly recommend it.
  15. Had no idea she lived so long ... RIP. The one LP I acquired:
  16. Feel free Steve, I am sure Tad will have a reply to whatever you've seen that you think is wrong. Personally I thought it was excellent and had few or no quibbles about what he wrote.
  17. Not only that, but you gotta love Mel Brooks' shout out:
  18. Yes, very nice piece, thank you for posting this.
  19. I think everyone promises "regular" maintenance? I do my own cleaning of mine but I know I could stop in at Sam's and have them cleaned up and you continue to get free testing and adjustments. The one thing I make sure to get is extended warranty on purchase. I basically have two sets now with the same settings so if the newest ones that I use regularly break down I have backups and don't have to suffer in unenhanced silence.
  20. Totally agree but wondering if it would be allowed on youtube for long.
  21. Can't say how the music mode will work over time (or over the next 29 days) but believe me, my hearing was so far gone on my first hearing aids 15 years ago, I was amazed at how loud everything sounded. You'll get used to the treble end boost soon enough. For those in a similar position, you also find yourself speaking differently, again because of how you are hearing with the help of the aids. Could not live without them that I know.
  22. My thoughts are without a doubt have a third generator to dedicate to the well pump; Be absolutely certain that generators are serviced/ready to roll ahead of time - we thought both were good to go but older one with known issues was a real comedy of errors and trouble. Maximize gas supply well ahead of storm; Only wild card is possible investment in much larger generator for max power vs getting similar size generator to what we have for that third one that we need.
  23. Mostly nonsense. I certainly hope that the 10 inch LP of three tracks with Lee, Nicky Hill, Ira Sullivan, Bobby Timmons, Spanky Debrest and Philly Joe shows up somewhere, somehow. Cause I am not paying $200 just for that.
  24. Hope that never happens again TTK. It certainly sucks to be among the final few thousand to get restored, and I know someone who is also still waiting and very frustrated - her neighborhood is on but she has a downed wire in her backyard and is still waiting two days after everybody else came on. I was amazed to learn of Florida Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies were accompanying fuel trucks to their destinations. Could not fathom it, it until I was informed by my wife's horse helper that there had been a shooting at a gas station where she lives in Dade City. At the same time, on Sunday morning, I saw the gas station nearest us had gas, a short line had formed, and there was no fuel truck or police presence in evidence.
