Weirder and weirder, tried a second restart of the day, and the first CDR that wasn't recognized is now playing.

Jonathan Schwartz Suspended From Radio Station WNYC
Dan Gould replied to sgcim's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I was with you until your last six words. -
I've never left a CDR "unclosed".
-
Now every CDR is registering as blank including several I played yesterday. Unfuckingbelievable. Gets better and better (and more and more confusing): Just burned a new CDR to see if it would be recognized. And it was. How the hell can it recognize a newly burned CD but not recognize older ones, including ones the system played just yesterday?
-
Well here's something I've never had happen before. A clearly burned CDR is only recognized as a blank CDR by my PC. Goldwave editing software has an extract function, also doesn't "see" the disc. Put it in the boombox, it plays fine. Anyone had this problem before? Before my PC issues in November I had an Audio ripper software install haven't replaced it but that's my only other thought on how to try to rescue this disc, other than pulling out the boombox to listen. Edit to add: And now it just happened again!

Jealous.

Well done HP. I've not had the record very long at all - found a dirt-cheap clean copy on discogs last month, to go with another Sackville release found in November. I decided to include it because it doesn't strike me as the most "JAY" recording he ever did while being aware that even if it doesn't sound overwhelmingly like McShann, there was a distinct chance someone would have the recording and recognize it. Looking forward to your other comments.

Sad news, I never made it to Miami for one of his festivals but did see him in Fort Lauderdale with his brother Jesse Jones, almost sure it was a Cannonball-themed show, and a really excellent one.

I've made a habit of watching for Houston's Fall Highnote release then ask for it at Christmas or use an Amazon gift card for it. So all I got was the latest, Rain or Shine. Very nice. There's a certain sameness to his releases on Highnote but I don't care. Someday there won't be a new collection of ballads, standards and blues so I'll keep collecting them all.

Made my donation just before this discussion but will now plan to up the schedule to semi-annual. Thinking of it that way, $50 twice a year is just over $8 a month. Even if the discussions aren't as involving as they used to be, surely the album cover threads are worth $8 a month.

Well I know its early but Felser posted his answers a tad early in anticipation of New Year's travels and Thom posted mine early since he's traveling this weekend and I am heading to Mom's and will be mostly offline especially on Monday so here goes: http://thomkeith.net/index.php/blindfold-tests/ 18 tracks so thanks in advance for your indulgence. A gimme here, an obscurity there and best of all, three guitar tracks for Jim R.'s consideration. And if you think you heard Gene Harris, think again.

Damn damn DAMN. Sally White was a fantastic lady and lover of jazz (and high school classmate and good friend of Horace Silver in Norwalk, right next door to Westport). I discovered her store not long after I got deeply into the music and while I was living in CT, made what seemed like weekly visits. Later the visits only coincided with family visits which were often at Christmastime. Her store would be so busy and so many, many friends like me coming in to chat with her. I'd outlast them all until the store was quiet again and we could get caught up. I think she was proud how her store outlasted all the chain stores in the area. Maybe it was the customer service or the niche she occupied (I'm guessing 40% of shelf space was given over to jazz) but eventually the internet got her shop, too. And she wasn't happy about it. She offered free shipping but the convenience and even larger selection available online kept me shopping there if I wasn't standing in her shop. Then I'd feel guilty, when she'd remind me that she does mail-order, and I'd nod but never call her. I think my favorite memory is the time that we got together outside the store, we took the train from Westport to NYC and saw Eastern Rebellion, I think at Bradley's. David Williams and Cedar himself came over to chat with her. I think Sally is hanging with a lot of old friends now and hearing a lot of sweet sounds.

Damn. A good guy to have around and he will be missed.

Never even heard of it but I am more and more interested in tracking down a copy ...
-
I didn't want to say that right away since the picture is very small. He does have a toothy grin.

Funny I just acquired both very recently. The solo disc was $5 but I think I paid $10 for Third Down. Worthy recordings so now I am sure there'll be another round of Xanadu CDs that will include both.

Thanks Kevin for alerting me to this Junior Cook Quartet date - I am pretty sure I have the Coleman tunes on an Affinity issue but while the title seems very familiar I can't find the separate Cook date anywhere. He and Mickey Tucker made a nice combination on those Steeplechases so I'm excited that there's more from them to hear.

Maybe the question of Die Hard didn't excite too many people, but seeing the pic of the Alfredson's tree in the current Christmas thread, with its white lights, reminds me of this "other" important question of the holiday season. I think when I was a kid I wanted colored lights but after I got older I realized that Mom was right: with the right ornaments on the tree, you need a neutral light to make everything sparkle with its own color. Way better. And glad my wife agreed, once I explained the concept. Too bad with a not-quite two year old puppy we're not putting up the tree until he mellows out some more or I'd post pictures. So what about you?

Die Hard is a Christmas Movie?
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I think I should be grateful that at least on this site, the correct answer is at least neck-and-neck with the ridiculous one. So to paraphrase John McClane, "Merry Christmas, motherfucker!" -

Very sad to hear; one of my favorite shows at the Arts Garage in Delray Beach was with Kevin. I had a couple of his CDs before seeing him but seeing him in person made me a major fan. More than just a good live singer - an all around entertainer.

Die Hard is a Christmas Movie?

Interesting you mention these others. All I know about Home Alone is that the end has Costanza crying on Seinfeld, much to Jerry's dismay. That tells me its a Christmas movie because there's actual heart-tugging go on. Here's a rule: Cartoonish movie violence - might be a Christmas movie. Multiple brutal deaths by gunshot, C-4 explosives, surface-to-surface missiles and 80 story fall - does not qualify as a Christmas movie. -

Now that's funny but it still doesn't make it a Christmas movie.
