  1. Is anyone familiar with these? Discogs.com describes the series thusly: Johnny himself had three volumes, along side Charles Brown, Big Joe Turner, Louis Jordan, Gatemouth Moore, Joe Liggins, Roy Milton, Amos Milborn, Cleanhead Vinson and Richard Berry. I already snagged the first volume which featured Pee Wee Crayton. As always, Thanks in advance
  2. Well for whatever it's worth, here's my 2015 Personal Record Store Day haul from Sunday: On The Trail (PAUSA) - one of those Colorado Jazz Party releases, this one has Clark Terry all over it along with Zoot, Flip Phillips, Sweets, Victor Feldman, Kai Winding Bobby Jones, Hill Country Suite (Enja) Louie Bellson, Prime Time (Concord) w. Blue Mitchell Jimmy McGriff, Steppin Up & Blue to the 'Bone (both Milestone, the former with Hank Crawford the latter with Al Grey) Phineas Newborn Jr, Back Home (Fantasy) I have the earlier album with Ray Brown and Elvin didn't even know about this one Kenny Drew Trio, Ruby My Dear (Steeplechase) Dwight Dickerson Trio, Sooner or Later (Trend) Herman Foster Trio, The One and Only (Timeless) This one made me think of MG, I had to go for it ... George Coleman & Tete Montoliu, Meditation (Muse) Pee Wee Crayton, Great Rhythm & Blues Oldies (Blues Spectrum) When I saw this I immediately thought "cheap comp of his '50s stuff" but then I realized it must be a Johnny Otis production/label because Johnny and Shuggie are on it along with Gene "Mighty Flea" Connors and Clifford Solomon. So that would make it a late '60s/early '70s recording and that makes me wonder about the rest of this series which apparently included volumes with Louis Jordan, Charles Brown, Johnny Otis, Joe Turner and Joe Liggins. Lowdown Memphis Harmonica Jam 1950-'55 (Nighthawk) And with no crowds, I had all the time in the world at the listening station to sample to my heart's desire.
  3. At the most excellent Arts Garage, if anyone else is interested: http://artsgarage.org/Home/FormView?page=show-schedule&ViewMode=GridView&DisplayStart=0&SortDirection=Asc&SortColumn=edate&Id=378
  4. It's 8:30 pm, it's 7-0 Yankees. So which is the real Clay Buccholz? The guy in Philly or the guy in the Bronx? From many years of watching this over-rated POS, I am quite sure it's this guy, tonight. That's who will pitch, and stink up the joint 60% of the time. We're back to the 2000 Red Sox, all offense and not a pitcher to be found. Actually I'm wrong that team had Pedro. This team has squat.
  5. How does this come down this late before the big day? How do you miss the deadline anyway?
  6. Thanks Thom I always enjoy your comments and impressions. It's just too bad that the track you nailed best ended up being replaced on the official BFT.
  7. Let's hope there's yet more unearthed material (seems like a decent possibility, at the rate they've been going!). I know, very nicely done. I thought I read something about it yesterday (photo and/or design credit), but I can't find it now. Dan, refresh my failing memory here. To what extent (if any) did Eddie mention Wes when you interviewed him? (I think the transcript was among the casualties of our hard drive crash a few years back, btw). Nothing was said about Wes. I knew nothing of the connection; IIRC Bob Rusch did provide a list of suggested questions but he must have not known much about it either because he didn't mention Wes either.
  8. Not to jinx anything but the Sox are off to a nice start against future (perhaps) teammate Cole Hamels, with four solo shots, two by Pedroia who really needs a bounce-back year, and one each by Hanley Ramirez and Mookie Betts (remember that name, he's gonna be a frigging star). And the Yanks ace got clobbered in his first start and took the loss. He's said he isn't going to throw as hard as last season, and it sounds like part of his 'avoid TJ surgery" strategy. I don't wish him ill but I think the odds are greater than even that sometime this season he tears the ligament and misses 12 months. And the longer it takes the more of a next season that he'll miss.
  9. How foolish I was to have doubted your knowledge when it comes to this area ...
  10. My pleasure!
  11. This is why I was hoping MG would participate - not only does he always have interesting things to say, but I also picked some tunes with him in mind. So thanks to Bill for reaching out and letting MG know about my BFT.
  12. More later but I wanted to say you'll be looking a long time to find it as a Floating Jazz Festival release.
  13. Well that will suck (inventory-wise, I have no desire for any Record Store Day releases and will wait for the Wes CD to come out) but I'm still going next weekend, not two weekends from now. Reality is I haven't been to either store since my birthday vinyl safari in September so it's plenty of time for some churn in the stacks. I've actually thought again about that Wes/Eddie Higgins release. I think I'll inquire at the two local stores if they ordered and the price, and should I finish shopping next weekend with sufficient funds left over (did I mention that Universal P&C is funding this safari, four $25 gift cards I've held onto for this occasion?) I may go out on the big day just to pick up the LP on Universal's dime, then offer it here or on eBay to recoup the expense, after I've listened once and transferred to digital.
  14. What an awesome looking cover. <drool>
  15. So the manager gives the hook to a Hook pitcher a few times a game (most of the time). Seems like a great promotional opportunity for a local business. "This hook brought to you by Earl's Rod & Reel." Or maybe a fund-raising sponsorship, $5 for every hook on the season. (of course I realize since a pitcher getting the hook isn't really a preferred outcome I guess it would have to be predicated on opposition hooks, not Hook hooks.) :G

  17. Wow, I didn't expect that kind of response. Looking forward to your comments!
  18. Thanks, I enjoyed your responses.
  19. Thanks Jim, now get back to Disc 1 track 2. I'm going to call it Jim R's tune at the reveal so you've got 29 days to figure it out.
  20. Thanks for hinting at but not revealing the obscurities, but on number two you should keep listening, Jim.
