I've been meaning to point out that Polanski gave his 13 year old victim qualudes (and alcohol) before he buggered her. Maybe it's where Cos got the idea from.

Has anyone mentioned John Wright? Three (I think) leader dates for Weinstock and that's pretty much it. I think he just kept playing around Chicago after that. If you dig the Gene Harris/Ray Bryant/Bobby Timmons et al hyper-bluesy thing, he's great. I found a CD he did for a Japanese label in the mid-90s and it's fantastic, Wright Changes (he hadn't, and sounds better than ever).

Who probably aren't getting the biggest performance fees in the first place!
-
Yeah but so could the $1.49 bag at Publix.

The shows I attend in south Florida are organized by non-profits (South Florida Jazz) or take place at the non-profit's venue (Arts Garage) so I've always kind of assumed that the CDs for sale are a way to support both artist and organization. (But I won't buy the $3 bag of M&Ms.)

2015 MLB Season - Let's Play Two!
Dan Gould replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The diameter of a pitcher's mound is 18 feet. The rubber is in the middle, making it 9 feet to the leading edge. The video shows him releasing the ball practically on that edge. There's also this from the article: So you're right, it's not six feet closer. He's 8 feet closer. But if everyone else is about two feet closer (the Grienke vid looks more like a foot, but still) ... then he is in fact six feet closer than almost any other pitcher. 2015 MLB Season - Let's Play Two!

Anyone examining that video should appreciate the massive difference between Grienke's motion, in which his foot has travelled perhaps 6-12 inches from the rubber when he releases the ball, and Capps who is about 6 feet closer to the plate when he releases the ball. It's a completely unfair competitive advantage, for a guy who doesn't need it considering he throws three-digit gas and has a wipe out slider now. -

Paul, according to the article GA linked and I quoted from, MLB has determined that this pitcher is pitching within the rules. What I don't get is how this delivery was tolerated in the minors (though the article mentioned one or two times that minor league umps called 'illegal pitch') and no one ever forced him to adhere to the rules the way other pitchers do: Push off the rubber and if your foot is 18 inches from the rubber when you actually release it, fine. This guy's foot is about 60 inches from the rubber when he lets it go. -
I was sure someone would post this but I guess it's up to me. The NYT got their hands on another Cosby deposition. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/19/arts/bill-cosby-deposition-reveals-calculated-pursuit-of-young-women-using-fame-drugs-and-deceit.html?_r=0 It's as appalling as you'd expect. The money quote is that he equates giving the drugs to offering a woman a drink, with the obvious implication that his approach is the traditional "get her drunk then fool around" school of 'seduction'. The problem is it's not a drink. It's a powerful narcotic given to people who may or may not know how they will react to it. IMHO it's like he's offering each of these women one drink that's really the equivalent of 5 or more. It might as well be a roofie-spiked drink. He's disgusting.

Which makes zero sense to me, but there it is. It's one thing that all pitchers extend forward, pushing off (and losing contact with) the rubber before releasing the ball. This guy leaps two plus feet forward. It makes a mockery of the rule and for MLB to give it the "a-ok" is total BS. -
Bowed out? Did I miss that announcement? I was planning to reach out to you Jim about Janiva's appearance at the Bradenton Blues Festival but now I guess I'll have to consider going only to see her.

Somehow I have always been under the impression that Lou Donaldson constantly played in a style of jazz that went BEYOND that, so .... ? Besides, just looking at the excerpt in the opening post: If you just take the core of one man's opinion and observations from his presence on the scene and even take them with a bit of salt, there STILL is a grain of "emperor's clothes" truth to it after all. Acquired wisdom (of what one - at large - is supposed NOT to disagree on) isn't always where wisdom really is. Lou Donaldson did play in a style that went beyond swing or jazz influenced r&b in the 1950's, but his playing regressed (in terms of "modernity") after that, and it seems that he was happy to play only what people wanted to hear - even to the point of memorizing a recorded solo so that people would hear exactly what they were used to. That's fine for him if that's what he wanted to do, but why put down others who wanted to play something new? As for his putdown of John Coltrane, someone should tell Lou that Trane's records have probably easily outsold his over the years, so what does that say about his theories of music and popularity? 1. Pretty sure it's Lou's stage patter that is canned, not his solos. And if bebop still counts as modern, then Lou still plays pretty modern, since he always includes a bop anthem or three, along with Alligator Boogaloo. 2. I'd venture a guess that it took some time for Trane's records to outsell his, and they didn't outsell them while they were both alive. And when it came to paying customers I'm pretty sure Lou had Trane beat pretty easily. That was Lou's whole M.O., give the people what they want, and make sure you book reliable musicians to play your shows. Guys like Trane and Ornette gave the people what they themselves wanted and let their music find their audience. God love all of them. I just don't get the sensitivity of the free jazz crowd. YMMV of course.

The best store I ever knew for trade-ins was Jazz Cat (IIRC) in Columbia SC. Big sign that said "if you buy a record and don't like it, it is now a used record. Trade credit will be given accordingly." But once they realized how much I was spending with them, one day they just started to give me 100% store credit and from then on I had a "bring it home and test play it" deal. It was awesome.

+1. Really excited to see Bloom County back.

I like it just as much as the Lighthouse set, but why shouldn't I?

Not that I want to shame anyone but I've always been curious as to how many donors there were last time, covering that $800. Given how often I am here I'd like to know I am on the plus side of the average donation.

Thank you, thank you, but, truth be told, if Da Bastards tell me I missed out on my order last night, I just might not be that gung ho about doing the leg work for 'em.

I looked long and hard at it, and looked elsewhere too. But from the tracklist I found on discogs.com it sounds like a set of second takes of tracks from Volume 1, which I already have. So I let it be. Hey guys whenever the Chicago PO get it to me, I get that stuff moving on quick.

Regarding the original question, at the prices listed I'd always pull the trigger if I wanted to hear the music - but part of that is the fact that I dump all LPs into the computer and manually de-pop and burn CDs. If you're willing to do the work you can get some very nice results, and there is a depop program I occasionally use with hardly any effect to the sound, if a record has so much damage I just can't take the time to de-click by hand. This conversation got me thinking about the bastards(tm) and last night I found some blues LPs I am trying to snag. One that I didn't pull the trigger on does have a listing indicating that they will do play-testing on occasion: https://www.dustygroove.com/item/760985 (Actually as I re-read that, how is the vinyl nice and clean yet "looks bad on the others but doesn't click"? )

Speaking of Foster in my last vinyl safari I found a trio recording on Timeless. Quite good and I can't imagine it would cost anyone much if they find a copy.
