  2. There are better time wasters. And Don Orsillo can f off. He's born in Mass., raised in NH, lifelong Red Sox fan but after they fired him, he decided "you don't want me, I don't want you." Sorry if you're a broadcaster you're like a manager - hired to be fired. If you grew up with the team, get the fuck over yourself and don't hate on them for firing you.
  3. The Red Sox have turned into an Mother bleeping joke. Nice to know I have nothing of a professional (or collegiate) athletic nature to give a fuck about until 2025.
  4. Jansen was in the batter's box when the game was suspended, so upon resumption as the MLB article puts it: The announcement in the press box should go something like this: [Insert name of pinch-hitter here] is hitting for Danny Jansen. Defensive substitution for the Red Sox. Danny Jansen replacing Reese McGuire at catcher. Unfortunately, Jansen was only down 0-1 when the game resumes. By rule, if there were two strikes on the batter when a pinch hit occurs, and is followed by a strikeout, the strikeout is credited to the original batter. Therefore, had the stars truly aligned, Jansen could record the putout on a strikeout of Jansen. But alas it cannot happen. In terms of playing for same team, its happened in the minors: Dale Holman played for both the Syracuse Chiefs and Richmond Braves in the same Triple-A game in 1986. Holman was with Syracuse (then the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate) when the game began in June. It was suspended due to rain, and by the time it resumed on Aug. 16, the outfielder had been released by the Blue Jays and had signed on with the Braves. Holman started at Double-A with Atlanta, but he was promoted to Triple-A just in time for the resumed game. Holman went 1-for-1 with Syracuse when the game started, and 2-for-2 for Richmond when it continued. All in all, a 3-for-3 game … with hits for both teams.
  5. Jordan was recorded regularly thru out his career which lasted many, many years beyond. Mobley went to Europe and existed in the jazz public eye just barely beyond that period of time. I think that explains the different reactions. Regardless we're very fortunate for all of the Dutch archival releases.
  6. I understand he was touring with Ron Carter and had a heart attack in Japan.
  7. It's an amazing thing, so many great players and some terrific performances. A remarkable gift from Schaap to the jazz world. I mostly noticed Charles Williams in there. A little wonky sound on this one but certainly listenable. Thanks for the reminder about the Big John Patton appearance, I haven't gone back to that one yet. And I repeat my offer to stream and edit any concert from the archive and provide a best-possible audio file to members. Just PM me.
  8. I have no details but Loren Schoenberg has stated on FB that Russell Malone has died. He would have turned 61 in November. RIP.
  9. I am reminded that member @Trumpet Guy was the nom de posting for Phil Grenadier, who appears on the bandstand on this newly uploaded West End broadcast: https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/collections/2137/collection_resources/134317
  10. My first c/c was Amex, filled out an application in the student union my final semester as an undergrad. I admit I bought into the PR about Amex, the "image" of Amex users, but the fact is that a charge card is way better than a true credit card. I knew I had to pay (and still have to pay even if they allow a balance now) the balance off the next month. Keeps you on the much more straight-and-narrow as a young person starting out.
  11. They are also not supposed to have credit card minimums either but a lot of places do. The last retail job I had the owner absolutely hated those fees and thought what Amex charged was absolutely insane.
  12. There is a Jackie Paris show from the West End available for streaming from the Phil Schaap Jazz Collection, about an hour long. West End live broadcast, April 18, 1986, featuring the Jackie Paris Trio. Personnel: Jackie Paris, vocals, guitar, Jim McNeely, piano, Mike Richmond, bass. Set list: [Opening announcements] -- But beautiful -- Indiana -- I have dreamed -- [brief interview] -- Blue bossa -- Detour ahead [end broadcast]. [Test tones at beginning of reel. Recording begins around 1:05.], source::Reel-to-reel https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/collections/2137/collection_resources/132991?u=t&keywords[]=jackie&keywords[]=paris
  13. Nice to hear that this series is still running ...
  14. Wow did not realize that either. I guess Claxton didn't take the photos since they don't have any billowing cigarette smoke around her head.
  15. OK this isn't directly related to the website but today is Percy France's birthday, he would have been 96. So how about three links to wonderful shows broadcast from the West End and now available at Vanderbilt's Aviary page from the Phil Schaap Jazz Collection? This is a great show, titled "Blue and Boogie" by Phil Schaap as the Two-Tenor Boogie (Percy and Eddie Barefield) play a program of bop standards with Sammy Price's boogie woogie piano. https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/collections/2137/collection_resources/131148?u=t&keywords[]=two%20tenor%20boogie More in a bebop vein: Phil told me directly that Percy would sub with Joe Albany's New Yorkers and here is proof. https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/collections/2137/collection_resources/132390?u=t&keywords[]=joe%20albany And one more - Percy as leader with the great Bob Neloms on piano https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/collections/2137/collection_resources/131313?u=t&keywords[]=percy%20france PERCY FRANCE LIVES!
  16. I guess I knew the photo at top but was stunned to learn that William Claxton, jazz photographer extraordinaire, was both the photographer and her husband until his death. When they met she knew who he was too - she was a jazzer. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/13/fashion/peggy-moffitt-dead.html?unlocked_article_code=1.C04.kLqg.0nAQQkxlBDyn&smid=url-share
  17. In the realm of interviews ... there was an ongoing series of Wednesday night broadcasts of musicians hosting on WKCR, playing their own choice of tunes, interviewing others ... basically doing their own thing. I have never heard one but I am now informed by my Librarian contact that they have quite a few of them and that they will also be worked on after the West End shows and in amongst the formal interviews that Phil conducted.
  18. I was only at the Vanguard once, to see Eastern Rebellion with Ralph Moore. He came down the steps past me and I said aloud "there he is" or something like that. I was not NY cool and felt like a dweeb.
  19. He's been a super-helpful guy. He has photo credits in the NYT article Brad posted at the start of the thread. @l p I was told by the librarian that he has another 150 live music reels that he is steadily uploading and then their priority shifts to the Interview tapes. At the rate he has been going that puts Interview tapes being uploaded starting by mid or late September.
  20. @Niko Well that was quick turnaround. The reference librarian already re-uploaded the Bill Saxton show and its showing as playable now.
  21. Perfect example of how I can improve the enjoyment of these treasures ... Fathead Newman with Ronnie Cuber was just uploaded last night, almost 40 minutes worth (less Schaap-speak) but as I went thru the wav file I discovered a channel drop out/back in over a good 25 seconds of the last tune - a simple fix but if you just listen to the stream something you'd probably notice. BTW that is a rare (I strongly suspect) flute duet between Newman and Cuber.
  22. I spotted that one this morning too and thought "John Patton - cool!" Looking at the listing page I notice there is no photo included. This usually indicates a restricted access tape (there are studio recordings that have it also). But this is clearly a West End broadcast that ought to be publicly available. I am going to email the librarian in charge and inquire, I'll let you know what he says. And, you are very welcome, Niko.
  23. Because I hope to help people enjoy these long-ago and forgotten broadcasts of live jazz by legends of the swing and bop eras, I am offering the following service: If you stream or see a recording available thru Vanderbilt's website and wish you could enjoy it without being tethered to your favorite streaming device, send me a PM and I will: Stream the show into my goldwave audio software; Edit for best signal, trim for superfluous gaps (some have interludes in the middle of the broadcast from the studio, unrelated to the show in question) and extraneous noise - Phil's microphone could be counted on for being rather noisy after he finally shuts up - and send you the results as an MP3 file. Any request that I have already done this for will get same day service!
  24. Glad to help Brad, though if you are interested in the concerts broadcast from the West End, really the best way to browse them is to mark Reel to Reel as "source" in the left column and just go page by page. Since doing that, I have switched to choosing "add date" as the sorting option and then go to the last few pages to see what is actually new. For Phil's shows they do auto sort by name, and come to think of it, if its Birthday broadcasts you want they should be easily found with a search of 'Birthday'.
  25. There are over 100 recordings that fall out on an "interview" search right now: https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/catalog?search_type=advance&transliteration_status=false&f[collection_id_is][]=2137&keywords[]=interview&title_text[]=&resource_description[]=&indexes[]=&transcript[]=&supplemental_file[]=&collection_title[]=&op[]=&type_of_search[]=wildcard&type_of_field_selector[]=wildcard&sort=title_ss+asc&search_field=advanced&commit=Search Further, Phil's assistants were also tasked with digitization of some sources and they have already worked to digitize thru an outside vendor what was on reel.
